Silver finger ring. Cast D section band of uniform width with a series of seven complete and stubby saltires equidistantly distributed along its outer side. At the shoulder of the ring, the site of an eighth saltire is intruded on by a slightly expanded oval bezel displaying a Maltese cross with rounded ends to its arms, with a triangular moulding in the equivalent position on the other side of the bezel. The ends of the band are butted behind the bezel, suggesting it to be soldered to the band at the point of its closure. Smoothed by wear. In view of the material and suspected date, t…

Copper alloy finger ring fragment. The upper half of a finger ring with a narrow band of D-section expanding from the shoulders to form a neatly grooved or collared oval bezel on top of which a triskele is moulded in bold relief. A ring around the flat plinth above which the triskele appears is very finely billeted, cf. Guiraud Type 4, which includes a collared bezel amongst a range of attributes. The wearing of finger rings was a Roman custom and silver was probably available only through sources controlled by Romans under their rule, but the Triskele recalls a preoccupation with all …

Silver finger ring. Cast flattened D section band, expanded and thickened at a bezel of kinked or V-shaped form. Silver finger ring. Flat cast band with an expanded figurative bezel in the form of a lunate belt buckle frame with a double barred fitting to the right. Within the loop an incised figure composed of crescentic stamps in a left-hand spiral arrangement oddly resembles a fossil ammonite, though a floral motif may be intended. Silver finger ring fragment. Cast bezel from a fede or betrothal ring, featuring two clasped hands below a single arched crown; both hands emerge from slashed and waisted cuffs. A yellowish tint might suggest the silver has subsequently been gilded. An association with royal weddings is sometimes perceived in what doubtless became a more widely appreciated convention of romantic imagery; if so, the costume detail as well as the technique of silver-gilt might point to a later 16th-century date. In view of its suspected age and material, this object is to be submitted to the Treasure pr…

Silver finger ring fragment. A narrow cast band, heightened at a sub-rectangular box bezel with rounded ends, now void. The bezel is clasped by sloping shoulders, with the band tapering to a very thin [1.8mm] form opposite the bezel. Very crudely incised lettering also appears on both long sides of the bezel. On one side it reads: I N and on the other A W. There are also similarly crudel…

Silver finger ring. Cast rectangular section band with a butted and soldered join behind a separately cast bezel representing a pair of clasped hands with the thumbs intertwined, each hand protruding from a puffed and slashed cuff. A cross with a diagonal line in each of its angles is incised on the band at either shoulder, each cross occupying a field limited by paired vertical lines. The motif is associated with betrothal, and the costume detail incorporated and the style of marginal decoration point to an early post-medieval date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.
