Silver possible buckle fragment. Cast loop fragment, described as a hook by the finder, thicker on its longer side and broken at both its ends, here taken as about one half of a simple buckle frame. There is the start of a return to the curve on the inner edge of the thicker part. A mould line appears along the inner side while the outer surfaces are polished as if by wear. The proximity of early Anglo-Saxon material in the vicinity and reported along with this object prompts the speculative ascription of an early date. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 410-800. The suspected ag…

Silver possible buckle plate fragment. A rectangular sheet metal plate with a constriction at its outer end, where it is broken. A motif stamped from behind depicts a stag of fourteen points and the forequarters of a large hound pursuing it. The finder kindly suggests a 17th-century date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700. It follows that the age and material commend submission of the object to the Treasure process, ref. 2022 T761. Length: 15.8mm, Height: 8.6mm, Thickness: 0.4mm, Weight: 0.43gms

Silver buckle. A tiny possibly die-stamped sub-rectangular buckle frame with the stubs of a separate steel spindle, and exhibiting a slight curvature when viewed in profile. A line of three stamps appears along the back of one outer edge in rectangular compartments, all only partially present: possibly a tower, a lion walking left, and the letter C. If this reading is upheld, it could suggest the Exeter assay office, possibly dated to 1727, depending on the reading of the letter style. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1720-1790, from hallmarks, at earliest, 1727 Length: 17.9mm, Heigh…

Silver buckle pin. Neatly cast tapered rectangular section pin with an oval loop and an adjacent stop at one end, and a point at the other. The loop has been closed by bending around the frame [lost], which must imply that the frame itself has been broken to permit it to become detached. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1500. In view of the suspected material, this object is to be submitted to the Treasure process as an addendum to a series of objects from the Carlile Collection [part 2] reported in 2013, reference 2016 T499. Length: 28.2mm, Width: 3.9mm, Thickness (at loop): 3mm, We…

Tongue from an early Anglo-Saxon buckle. The tongue is cast and is D-shaped in section, curving towards the tip (which is broken off). At the other end, three incised grooves separate the tongue from a shield-shaped projection, on the reverse of which are the remains of the lug which would have attached the tongue to the buckle loop.

Large medieval silver buckle of lyre form and buckle plate, now in two parts. The plate retains its pin. The buckle was originally soldered to the plate, but has now broken off. The hollow plate which retained the end of the strap has two rivets and is decorated with a fleur de lys within a frame on a cross-hatched ground. Traces of the strap survive within the plate. The pin is intact within the hinge and is bevelled, tapering to the point. The buckle frame is decorated with a series of eight squares containing crosses against a cross-hatched ground, all within a border in which are …

Silver possible buckle frame, as identified by the finder. A light single looped frame probably cut from sheet metal of thickness 1.1mm, with scalloped and slightly expanded outer edges. The symmetrical decoration recalls that of 18th-century knee or shoe buckles, though how this object could work is uncertain; there is no trace of a spindle or other provision for fastening, and it was clearly flimsy; perhaps a definition as a strap loop would be more satisfactory. The loop may simply have been threaded on a ribbon as a decorative costume feature. Now squashed. Suggested date: possibl…

A medieval silver buckle, consisting of an oval frame with surviving pin, and a plate folded over the bar of the frame, with a hole for the pin. The frame has a knop with punched decoration at each side of the bar; the pin has a collar with similar punched decoration at the loop around the bar. The rectangular plate is engraved with a zigzag line and series of single dots within an engraved border, along the sides and inside edge. The two rivets survive in the inside corners of the plate. One corner of the plate is damaged and bent. For a copper alloy example with similar engraved dec…
