Silver coin. Sixpence of George III (1760-1820), probably 1817 issue, worn and probably used as a shooting target being indented on the obverse side. This might relate to widespread rural discontent in the period immediately after the end of the Napoleonic Wars, when a falling grain price led to price-fixing under the Corn Laws. The defacing of the Royal image was technically an Act of High Treason.

Silver coin. Worn penny of Charles I (1625-1649), with a central piercing executed from the obverse obliterating the face of the monarch. This act was clearly not intended to display the likeness of His Sacred Majesty, and its destruction may rather have been intended, perhaps as a political statement. As pierced coins of the period found their way into hoards it cannot be asserted that the piercing demonetised the coin – and indeed, any propagandist benefit would have depended on its continued circulation.

Silver possible spoon fragment. The upper part of a cast naturalistically rendered figurine modelled at a scale of c.1:25, representing the shoulders of a bearded man wearing a top hat at a rakish angle and smoking a large-bowled pipe with curved stem; there is a moulded hollow under each armpit at about the level where the figurine has broken. The flat top of the hat is polished by light wear. This object is here taken to be part of a secular version of an apostle spoon and may represent a fictional character: possibly a member of The Pickwick Club, a fictional society whose adventure…
