The object is a single fused lump, comprising at least four separate items fused together by heat, probably in the process of metalworking. There is a cut-halfpenny of medieval date, on which only the lower part of the bust is visible. This is not enough to assign a type with any certainty, but appears to be late Anglo-Saxon or Norman. There are two broken fragments from what appears to be the same strip of silver, with traces of lettering, and of gilding, which is probably a medieval finger-ring. A partially melted piece of silver binding these three together is probably another cut …

Silver, or Brass as suggested by Kevin Leahy, coin. Either: Sceat of Series L, possibly type 16/18 (cf. Abramson 2006, page 81, ref. K360), dated to 730-760, a London issue; or barbarous nummus copy. Obverse description: Bust enclosed in wreath. The bust appears to be facing. Reverse description: Figure standing or kneeling left on crescent, holding standard left in a large hand. Cliff Reeves kindly examined this coin; Rose Nicholson kindly suggest it to be a sceat, while Kevin Leahy would prefer to see it as a barbarous copy nummus. Diameter: 11.5mm, Weight: …

Tightly folded up silver band, now in two pieces. The larger part of the band is tapering towards one end, although the tip of that end broke off in antiquity. The other, wider end is where the smaller, separate part of the band snapped off recently. The larger part of the band is decorated with punched dots framing the edges and running in an arching pattern across the band. Two faint, incised lines are inscribed into the dotted arches. The use of the band is unclear. Its original length as well as thinness make it unlikely to have been a finger ring or similar. …

Biconical silver bead, probably made from thin sheet and now preserved by being full of clayey soil. The cross-section of the sheet is visible where a small patch is missing on one side. The bead is made in two halves, each with gently convex curved sides and a circular hole c. 2mm in diameter at the narrow end; the seam would probably originally have been soldered together, but now appears to be split along its length. There is no decoration either at the seam or the holes, or around either half. Biconical metal beads of this kind are known from the late 6th century but they becom…

Silver pin of middle Anglo-Saxon date (8th century). The head is flat, tapering in thickness to a minimum of 1.5mm, and is complete but irregular in shape with added engraved decoration, identical on both faces. It appears to depict a stylised animal's head in profile. A mouth is formed from a concave edge with a groove running alongside to delineate the lower jaw, and there is a small projecting nose above forming one of the pinhead's upper corners. A wide shallow groove runs down from the top of the pinhead, almost vertical but angled slightly towards the mouth, and hints at a brow …

Unidentified item of jewellery of early Anglo-Saxon date. The object is a melted fragment of silver, with both faces having the wrinkled surface resulting from the melting and congealing of metal. On one face a scrap of decorative detail survives; a strip 2mm wide decorated with two rows of punched triangles set apex-inward and one above the other, to give an impression of a reserved zig-zag in between. The triangles are filled with a dark grey or black material which is probably niello, and the strip appears to be flanked by slightly raised metal. The fragment measures 18.8mm long …

Description: Sub-rectangular or D-shaped head of a gilded silver pin. At one end the edge is more rectilinear, with a circular scar c. 2mm in diameter, where the shaft has been lost. The pin head has opposed flat faces, a flat undecorated front and a curved back. The flat main faces have similar decoration. Three curving V-section grooves spring from the middle of the end nearest the scar, curving and separating slightly towards the lower corner of the other end. The effect is that of a bird's beak, and this is heightened by a small dot set close to the springing point of the grooves,…

Silver coin fragment. Late Saxon penny fraction, possibly a contemporary copy of Edward the Elder (899-924); appears to have the obverse design on both sides. The earliest in the sequence illustrated by Mossop (1970, The Lincoln Mint c.890-1279, Corbitt and Hunter, Newcastle upon Tyne, plate 1) include examples with the OLE ending and coins identified as Viking copies of coins of Alfred. Silver (for [e] and [f] material is verified by finder's analysis) possible ingot fragments. Objects 1(a)-(f) were found in a loose scatter and were brought to the attention of Dr Kevin Leahy before 1996, along with a gold finger ring fragment found a little to the north. The gold finger ring was considered as Viking 'hackgold' and was duly reported under the Treasure Trove system then obtaining. The other objects were, however, deemed undiagnostic and returned to the finder. NLM-1B89B2 was found by another metal detector user, in the same general area but north-east of the other find…
