Silver coin. Penny of Aethelred II (978-1016), Canterbury mint issue of Leofstan, 1003-1009, as kindly identified by the finder, in excellent condition. The find spot, in the vicinity of a Viking encampment, is possibly significant, given the fresh condition of coin when lost.
Obverse description: Helmeted cuirassed and shielded bust left. Initial cross potent.

Reverse description: Voided long cross, three pellets at the point of a triangle in each angle. Initial cross pattee.
