Silver possible ingot. Cast bar of oval section with rounded ends, with one flat surface suggesting it has solidified on a flat smooth surface; the opposite long side may have been lightly hammered. The form may commend an identification as a silver ingot, but, in the absence of clear hammering marks or testing nicks, this would require laboratory examination by XRF to confirm or deny precious metal content. The mass, however, does suggest this to weigh almost exactly two units of 4.43gms, as are thought to have been used for bullion transactions in Viking Dublin, and by extension in …

Silver (for [e] and [f] material is verified by finder's analysis) possible ingot fragments. Objects 1(a)-(f) were found in a loose scatter and were brought to the attention of Dr Kevin Leahy before 1996, along with a gold finger ring fragment found a little to the north. The gold finger ring was considered as Viking 'hackgold' and was duly reported under the Treasure Trove system then obtaining. The other objects were, however, deemed undiagnostic and returned to the finder. NLM-1B89B2 was found by another metal detector user, in the same general area but north-east of the other find…

Silver
Possible Hacksilver. Fragment of silver sheet, with scalloped edge, two vertical folds and two vertically incised lines on its external surface. A tiny circular hole (diameter c.1mm) at the end of one of the incised lines may relate to its attachment; given the size this might have been sewn or tied to clothing or a bead string. Alternatively, the folds and incised lines might suggest this to be a fragment from a small pyramid-shaped bell. The collection of scrap silver is also characteristic of the Viking Age period. Suggested date: Early Medieval: 800-1100. Length: 16.71mm,…
