Copper alloy possible buckle fragment, as kindly suggested by the finder. A small cast loop with a markedly projecting lip in the zoomorphic form of a pointed beast head with prominent sub-triangular eyes or ears upstanding on top and with a grooved or hollowed underside; the putative strap bar is absent. The reddish tint of the metal is a feature often associated with Anglo-Scandinavian metalwork. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1000

Copper alloy buckle. A massy cast D-shaped buckle with an expanded and thickened textured outer edge with a broad grooved collar towards either end and a narrowed strap bar whose ends are grasped by biting beast heads; the centre of the strap bar is notched to receive a pin [lost]. This is a somewhat massier version of a buckle form usually ascribed to the 11th century. A wider date range is offered with deference to its atypical features. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1100

Copper alloy buckle. Cast single looped-shaped buckle with an expanded and thickened outer edge and with a biting beast head at either end of a narrowed strap bar; a groove serves as a pin rest. A narrow rectangular slotted plate of thickness 0.5mm with a rounded end flanked by spurs on the display side is looped round the strap bar and was secured by three rivets, one passing through the rounded terminal of the plate. A rectangular section pin passes through the slot in the plate and is looped round the frame. Plate now crumpled. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 1000-1100

Copper alloy buckle. Cast single looped or D-shaped buckle frame with a prominently projecting and grooved lip formed as a Borre style beast head on its outer edge, and with a narrowed and offset strap bar. The former might be taken as an early feature but the latter is a typical feature of high medieval buckles. Though beastliness in ornament is often considered a Viking trait a Romanesque date might equally be ventured here, as with much sculpture inhabited by Northern creatures; the beast head here might equally be read as a helmeted mask. Suggested date: Early Medieval to Medi…

Copper alloy buckle. Cast D-shaped or single looped buckle frame with a curved and expanded outer edge with stamped pits crowded across its display side only, and flatter or thinner than other examples in the same group. A shallow pin rest retains a spot of rust which might hint at the former presence of an iron pin. Dave Haldenby kindly opines this buckle may be of a different date to its companions from the same area. A greyish tint may point to a higher proportion of tin in the metal mix, or possibly use of a base silver alloy. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 800-1000

Copper alloy buckle. Cast D-shaped or single looped buckle with an expanded bulbous outer edge and with devolved beast heads formerly gripping the ends of the strap bar which is now lost. The form is usually accorded an 11th-century date, though a group of buckles from what may be a Viking camp at Thonock, Lincolnshire, may date from the earlier 10th century. Fiercely abraded, though a rather grim surface condition and the reddish-brown cast of the metal are typical features Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1025

Copper alloy buckle. Cast D-shaped or single looped buckle with an expanded bulbous outer edge on which pronounced radial ribs flank a broad and bordered pin rest, these details appearing on the display side only, and with devolved beast heads gripping the ends of the strap bar. Dave Haldenby kindly considers the beast heads to be more realistically modelled than on other examples in the group and the outer edge to be less expanded - perhaps in its relative thickness [MF]. A spot of rust on the strap bar may hint at the loss of an iron pin, which was presumably attached when the buckle…

Silver possible buckle fragment. Cast loop fragment, described as a hook by the finder, thicker on its longer side and broken at both its ends, here taken as about one half of a simple buckle frame. There is the start of a return to the curve on the inner edge of the thicker part. A mould line appears along the inner side while the outer surfaces are polished as if by wear. The proximity of early Anglo-Saxon material in the vicinity and reported along with this object prompts the speculative ascription of an early date. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 410-800. The suspected ag…

Copper alloy buckle. Cast D-shaped zoomorphic buckle frame with simplified beast heads rendered by paired grooves and ridges biting the ends of the strap bar.
