Copper alloy figurine depicting a helmeted and otherwise nude Mars. The style is what might be termed distinctly unclassical, the posture being stiff and the bodily proportions unrealistic. The limbs are crudely produced, arms of unequal size depending from very wide shoulders whilst the legs are unnaturally short. The god stands with his weight balanced on his right foot, his right arm bent forward at the elbow and his left appearing to hang at his side. The right hand, comprised of a flattened stump with the fingers coarsely and inaccurately defined by grooves, has been centrally dr…

Fragment of a copper alloy left arm from a figurine of Roman date. The modelling is of an excellent standard, the arm being bent at the elbow and the forearm extended forwards and upwards. The fingers are gently curled and give the impression that the hand may originally have held something, perhaps a spear. Given the presence of only this one limb, assiging an identity to the subject is impossible. The form of the arm suggests a male was intended.

Roman copper alloy figurine of a billy goat standing upon an integral plinth. The execution is good, the goat depicted in the act of walking with his head raised. His coat is rendered by broad lines which are probably a feature of the mould rather than having been engraved afterwards. The plinth takes the form of a fairly thin rectangular base (length 40mm) with three circular (approximately 3mm diameter) holes, one at end end and one central, presumably to attach the figurine to another object. The situation is confused somewhat by the presence of another just behind the first. Th…

Copper alloy equestrian figurine comprising the upper half (and the upper portion of the right leg) of a rider. The left arm is broken off at the shoulder, The figure is not well -modelled; he is raising his right arm, bent at the elbow. The arm ends in a blob-like hand; it is uncertain whether this hand held something or was simply raised in a gesture of benediction. Given the appearance of similar figurines the latter was probably the case. The figurine possibly wears armour but the lack of definition makes this difficult to tell. He also sports a curious piece of headgear, probably…

Copper alloy figurine of a horse, probably originally part of a horse and rider statuette. The animal is captured in the form of prancing forward with its left leg raised. Its oversized neck and head are well-modelled but damage and corrosion have removed most of the detail, including the ears. The mane is clearly defined with a marked longitudinal rear groove. The figurine is much damaged, missing the right foreleg, the lower portions of both rear legs and the tail. Length, from base of tail to tip of muzzle, 61mm, weight 74.45g. Probably 2nd or 3rd century.

Cast copper alloy figurine of a standing goat. The impression of a shaggy coat is conveyed by many downward-running grooves that cover the body. The horns at the back of the head are short and the eyes lentoid; a beard projects from the bottom of the lower jaw. The two fore and two rear feet are joined together, perhaps to make the figure more stable. Weight 52.72g. Length 47mm. Maximum height 36mm. Goats and horned animals in general were sacred to the god Mercury. Hence they often appear in company with the god. This statuette may have been made to attend upon a figurine of Mercury …

Copper alloy figurine of Roman date. The male subject is positioned rather stiffly in the act of walking with the arms (both without hands) having the appearance of having orignally held something, most probably a spear. The figure is ill-proportioned with a relatively large head, long torso and short legs and the engraved finishing lacks some detail but the figure is clearly wearing a breastplate with grooves that are probably meant to represent pteruges at the top of each arm and a skirt of pteruges below the breastplate. He appears to be barefoot, implying divinity. The head ap…

Roman copper alloy figurine of the three-headed dog, Cerberus, guardian of the Underworld. The animal is standing on all four legs, three of which are broken off about halfway and the fourth (the rear right) is almost complete. The long tail survives. The larger central head, which looks forwards, is flanked by two smaller heads which project from the shoulders. Curved grooves define the dog's slightly curly coat. The piece is competently modelled and the subject an unusual one. A number of Roman bronzes of Cerberus are known from Museum collections and the Auction market…
