Copper alloy finger ring with faint traces of gilding around the bezel and on the inner band. The ring, a solid example with heavy shoulders and corresponding to Henig's type X and XI, is a typical later second to third century form. The bezel is set with a dark red cornelian intaglio with a flat surface (10mm x 8mm). This gem is engraved with a figure of Fortuna standing (in impression) left and holding a cornucopia and rudder. The rather crudely engraved figure accords well with the date of the ring. Figures of Fortuna are common on intaglios, several being listed in Henig's corpu…

A heavy silver ring (13.99g) with rounded shoulders and a slightly raised flat bezel that roughly corresponds to Henig's type XI. The bezel is mounted with a bright orange-red cornelian depicting (in impression) a goat kneeling to the right and looking back over his shoulder at a single branched palm tree beneath which he sits. The type is similar to a number of cornelians recorded by Martin Henig in his corpus. Those animals are described as stags and all face left, not right, but they still furnish the closest parallels to this example (Henig p167, nos. 616-9). They are dated to …

Slender silver finger ring with transverse grooves flanking a small (4mm x 5mm) rectangular bezel, five on one side and four on the other. This bezel is engraved in intaglio with a bird, aligned with the band of the ring, probably intended to represent a cockerel. Cockerels were sacred to Mercury and this may denote a religious significance although the piece could equally have functioned simply as a signet. The form of the ring is late Roman and a 4th-century date is likely. Internal diameter approximately 20mm, weight 2.05g. The band of the ring, which is D-sectioned, is broken at o…

Copper alloy posy ring, a fair amount of gilding remaining on the inner band which is punched with the inscription - in Roman capitals - DEALE TRVLY. Were the inscription inscribed then a 17th century date would be likely but the use of puncheons to form the letters may place this ring later, in the 18th century. However, posy rings do no seem to have been produced much after the first half of the 18th century and so a date of c.1650-1750 is probably most appropriate for this example. There is the trace of a join in the band. Inner diameter 18.5mm, weight 2.68g.

Roman base silver finger ring, crudely produced with a sub rectangular bezel approximately 7x6mm with a couple of longitudinal grooves, the surviving shoulder expands slightly in width (from 6 to 7.5mm) and then tapers to a broken end where the subrectangular cross section is approximately 3mm wide and 1mm thick. Description: Sturdy and neatly made medieval gold finger-ring with a transversely set blue gem. The hoop is undecorated and sub-circular in cross-section. It measures 2.2 x 2.0mm at its narrowest and 2.5mm in diameter at the widest point; it then flares smoothly to the junction with the bezel, where the cross-section measures 3.0 x 3.2mm on each side. The interior of the hoop is not smooth and flat but is instead quite strongly curved. Each end of the hoop, at its junction with the bezel, has a thin flat shield-shaped plate across it, with a straight top and sides curving to a po…

Description and Dimensions: Small gold object, probably a tiny medieval finger-ring. A flattish pyramidal bezel 5.5mm square, with a very slightly concave reverse and a 1.5mm diameter circular indentation at the apex, forms the decorative centre. The opposite edges each have a very short flaring projection. 2.5mm wide and perhaps 0.7mm long. From the centre of each of these emerges a thin strand of gold, one longer (1.0mm x 0.7mm at the break) and the other much shorter (1.2mm x 0.8mm at the break) which would presumably have joined. The longer strand is bent, but was perhaps original…

Description: Fragment of silver finger-ring. About a quarter of the hoop survives, comprising one gradually flaring shoulder with gently rounded edges, broken at the bezel. Next to the neat transverse break the metal is very thin, and is decorated with two transverse rows of ribbing. Next to this is a trapezoidal thickened area at the curve of the shoulder, divided into lozenges by criss-cross grooves; there is a neat, tiny cross stamped or engraved at the centre of each lozenge. The hoop then gradually tapers to another neat transverse break, and is otherwise undecorated. The breaks …

Description: Gilded silver finger-ring of 16th-century date. The hoop is a low D shape in cross-section, and is gilded on both the flat interior and the curved exterior. The exterior is decorated all the way around the hoop with a series of discontinuous broad oblique grooves, each flanked by a narrow groove to either side, forming a zig-zag. The spaces above and below are filled with closely spaced and very neat rows of pellets, giving an effect often known as 'brambled'; the rows are set parallel to the oblique grooves. The decoration is all contained within a grooved border to eith…

Copper alloy finger ring of Roman date missing a section of the band opposite the bezel, one side of the surviving band bent back on itself. The bezel is set with a brown glass intaglio but the surface is heavily chipped and no details can be seen. THere is light engraving forming decoration, a chevron on each side of the gem (with the point in the direction of the setting) and a transverse border below. The style of ring is a 3rd century type and indeed the use of glass settings would also suggest a similar date. Maximum width 12mm, Intaglio approximately 11mm x 8mm. Weight 4.07g. 3r…
