Copper alloy finger ring of Roman date missing a section of the band opposite the bezel, one side of the surviving band bent back on itself. The bezel is set with a brown glass intaglio but the surface is heavily chipped and no details can be seen. THere is light engraving forming decoration, a chevron on each side of the gem (with the point in the direction of the setting) and a transverse border below. The style of ring is a 3rd century type and indeed the use of glass settings would also suggest a similar date. Maximum width 12mm, Intaglio approximately 11mm x 8mm. Weight 4.07g. 3r…

Slender silver finger ring with transverse grooves flanking a small (4mm x 5mm) rectangular bezel, five on one side and four on the other. This bezel is engraved in intaglio with a bird, aligned with the band of the ring, probably intended to represent a cockerel. Cockerels were sacred to Mercury and this may denote a religious significance although the piece could equally have functioned simply as a signet. The form of the ring is late Roman and a 4th-century date is likely. Internal diameter approximately 20mm, weight 2.05g. The band of the ring, which is D-sectioned, is broken at o…

A heavy silver ring (13.99g) with rounded shoulders and a slightly raised flat bezel that roughly corresponds to Henig's type XI. The bezel is mounted with a bright orange-red cornelian depicting (in impression) a goat kneeling to the right and looking back over his shoulder at a single branched palm tree beneath which he sits. The type is similar to a number of cornelians recorded by Martin Henig in his corpus. Those animals are described as stags and all face left, not right, but they still furnish the closest parallels to this example (Henig p167, nos. 616-9). They are dated to …

Copper alloy finger ring with faint traces of gilding around the bezel and on the inner band. The ring, a solid example with heavy shoulders and corresponding to Henig's type X and XI, is a typical later second to third century form. The bezel is set with a dark red cornelian intaglio with a flat surface (10mm x 8mm). This gem is engraved with a figure of Fortuna standing (in impression) left and holding a cornucopia and rudder. The rather crudely engraved figure accords well with the date of the ring. Figures of Fortuna are common on intaglios, several being listed in Henig's corpu…
