Copper alloy integral zoomorphic strap end of Early Medieval ('Middle Saxon') date. The beast head terminal has large, lentoid eyes and a rather pointed snout, the ears are open and laid back and of sub-rectangular shape. The shank has a flat top and base with chamfered sides and a raised section forming the attachment sheath in which two rivets survive, each in a lobe-shaped socket.

Isma'il  295-301/907-914; citing the caliph al-Muktafi billah 289-295/AD902-907. The Caliph's name is on the third line of the central reverse inscription; the Samanid's is on the fourth line.
