One half of a medieval cast copper alloy swivel, for use with a leash, comprising a loop with moulded stylised animal-head terminals, confronting an integral transversely set perforated oval, the central perforation of which would have contained a rivet, either integral with the missing half, or separate, on which both halves would have rotated. Length 27mm. Width 22mm. Weighs 5.30g. Swivels are likely to have had a number of related uses: for example, on the leashes of hunting dogs or lapdogs, with the smaller examples perhaps being used on straps for raptors when hawking. Fragment of Roman oval buckle frame of Hawkes and Dunning (1961) type IA. Just over half of the outside edge and part of one side survives. D-sectioned. Outside edge broken across the pin rest, originally between two confronting dolphins, one survives with a crest an open mouth defined by engraved oblique lines, ring-and-dot for the eye. Extant length 14mm. Extant width 16mm. This type belongs to the late 4th century (Clarke Lankhills 1979, 275).
