Flat circular plate, damaged and severely corroded; stub of both pin-lug and catch-plate on reverse; decoration on front cast in relief, consists of a central concave-sided cross with central circular recess; the four cross arms degenerate into a continuos double-contoured ring-chain interlace pattern around the periphery of the plate; this example which stylistically represents an Anglo-Scandinavian version of the Viking Borre style has several East Anglian parallels, cf. Cylindrical copper alloy handle with an internal iron core; pierced suspension lug at one end with a wire loop still in place; handle decorated with a series of concentric mouldings consisting of 3 rounded knops separated by raised billeted collars, paired at the upper end; below the lowermost of the mouldings the metal narrows to a tapering shank; of square section at the top and sub-circular section below; from the latter protrudes an iron core which has stained the surrounding copper-alloy with corrosion; presumably this represents the remains of a shank or shaft for a tool or implement.
