The front has a repoussé profile bust of Queen Anne looking left, wearing drapery around the shoulders fastened by a six-lobed brooch. Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Description: Roman silver finger-ring of Henig type II and Guiraud type 2c, with an oval setting of glass or enamel. The hoop is markedly wide and oval, and is sub-oval or biconvex in cross-section. There is some iron corrosion internally so the precise internal dimensions are hard to measure. The hoop widens and thickens steadily as it curves smoothly into the bezel. The bezel has an oval depression about 10mm long and 7.5mm wide, in line with the hoop, which is filled with a rough orange-brown substance very like the iron corrosion on the interior of the back of the hoop. Description: Penannular ring of probable Bronze Age date, probably from a composite (multiple strand) ring. It is C-shaped in cross-section, with a convex outer and a concave interior. The width of the ring is very consistent but the two ends do not sit quite in line, as if the ring has been slightly bent out of shape. There is a c. 1.5mm gap between the two ends, one of which is slightly incurved and the other slightly outcurved, as if they once joined. The top and bottom edges are neat and parallel, but one is more highly polished than the other, which has a narrow roughened str…

Description: Silver thimble with no obvious seams, so presumably made in one piece. The rim is straight with no thickening, and there are two circumferential grooves above it defining an undecorated zone. Above this is a zone of very regularly grid-set square indentations, which is bordered at the top by another circumferential groove. The indentations respect a 'strapwork' design, a zig-zag band free of indentations and outlined by a groove to either side. Incomplete plate brooch which imitates the sole of a shoe or sandal. One half survives, the toe end, with the pin lug on the reverse. It is pointed rather than rounded at the end and has no loop. Just in from the edge is a border groove, and there may be two very tiny stamped annulets set evenly across the centre, but corrosion makes it hard to be certain. It does not appear to be recessed enough in the centre to have been enamelled. On the reverse, what seems to be a single pin lug survives, broken through the off-centre circular perforation.
