Silver object of post-medieval date. It is a cylindrical tube, with a closed undecorated base with a central scar as if a loop has been torn away. The base projects to form a rim about 2mm deep, which has an obliquely beaded edge (resembling cabling) which is now very worn. Above, the sides are of thin sheet, with the top cut into a zig-zag of eight V-shaped cut-outs and eight projecting points which are now mostly bent inwards. A crack runs from the base of one of the cut-outs to just above the base. The sides are decorated with a engraved zig-zag border just below the top edge, then …

Description: Fragment of partly gilded silver, with ornament in a chip-carved style, made by using a range of stamps or punches. It is flat and sub-rectangular, with one straight original long edge which is smooth and rounded in cross-section. The other edges are all rougher and more right-angled in cross-section; the remaining long edge is nearly straight, and the short edges are V-shaped and nearly parallel to each other. Under magnification it can be seen that most of the other edges are cut; the only broken edge appears to be part of the angled-in short edge (the upper part on…

Description: Pair of flat lozenge-shaped objects made from thin silver sheet, with engraved decoration. One is complete, with two acute angles cut off to make squared ends, and two more obtuse angles. The squared-off ends each have an oval perforation. Decoration comprises a border line along the straight edges and shaped to run around the inner edge of the perforations, with a series of short straight lines within. In the very centre is a small lozenge filled with cross-hatching; around this, parallel to the edges, are four pairs of short dashes. The obtuse angles each have short rad…

Description: Unidentified object made from silver, partly gilded and inlaid with niello. It has a flat circular top and short straight or slightly convex sides forming a hollow cylinder; the underneath and inside are undecorated and ungilded. One side is now bent inwards, and a deep crack has resulted. The top is decorated with a reserved flat ungilded animal in profile, whose legs and tail dissolve into chip-carved interlace with plant elements. The animal is turned to the left, but the head is looking back over the shoulder to the right. The head has a sub-rectangular…

Description: Gilded silver object with niello inlay and Salin's Style I decoration dating it to the early Anglo-Saxon period. It is a heavy, three-dimensional object cast in one piece, perhaps imitating a buckle frame and pin, or alternatively a sword-ring. The object is largely circular in shape, thick and tapering upwards to form a truncated cone which has a sunken centre devoid of decoration. This is crossed by a bar which drapes across the slopes of the cone, dipping down into the centre where it is crossed by a second shorter bar at right angles. The sides of the cone ar…

Description: Crumpled and perhaps incomplete piece of gold sheet. It appears roughly circular in shape, but has one original straight side with a slightly burred thickened edge. This edge was c. 23mm long but is now bent about halfway along, with one half irregularly folded back on itself. The disc has a straight, slightly raised repoussé band parallel to the straight side and probably at the object's widest point; the band is about 3.5mm wide. Between this band and the straight edge are four rounded repoussé bosses which look like deliberate decoration, and seem too regular to be c…

Unidentified object made from copper alloy, in form very similar to the 'lyre-shaped' buckles used in the 15th century. It is openwork and roughly oval in outline. One end has a basically rectangular perforation and the other end has two oval perforations; these combine to form the 'lyre' shape. One of the short edges of the rectangular perforation (nearest the ovals) is incurved and has rounded corners. Beyond the two oval perforations is a terminal, now probably incomplete, formed from two back-to-back scrolls with a triangular perforation in between. There are two other areas o…

Pottery disc, 24 mm in diameter and 5 mm thick, perhaps a counter or playing piece. One face has a large incuse letter D, with VIII in smaller lettering below. The fabric is a fine red earthenware with ferrous inclusions; this type of fabric could have been made almost anywhere in England, so gives little help in identification. The inscription could be deciphered as eight pennyweight, but in fact the disc weighs 4.47g, which is 2.87 dwt. Probably post-medieval.

Unidentified copper-alloy object. One end has a long pyramidal terminal, tapering from a maximum cross-section of 4 x 3.5 mm. Below the widest point the object then tapers again slightly to a collar, below which its cross-section is circular. The circular shaft tapers quite quickly and is bent into a loop; it ends at a globular terminal. The object is quite worn and corroded, but it appears to be complete, and the bend does not appear to have caused any stress to the metal. Date and function unknown, but it does not appear to be modern. Unbent length c. 45 mm; existing length 23 mm.

Unidentified object made from bone, ivory or antler, with ring-and-dot decoration. It is biconvex in cross-section, with one face being slightly more curved than the other. One end is basically rectangular, 32.5 x 27 mm, and each long side of this rectangle has a central V-shaped cut-out flanked by semi-circular cut-outs. Each face is decorated with 19-20 unevenly spaced ring-and-dot motifs. One corner is certainly complete; from this, a long rod extends parallel to the long edge of the rectangle, increasing the length of the object to 85 mm. The rod is 6 mm wide, and is mainly pa…

Unidentified object made from copper alloy. It is basically 5 mm square in cross-section, although the corners have been cut off leaving narrow facets. Two of the facets have fine transverse lines across them. One end is cut off at a slight angle, leaving a lip on one edge as if the cutting instrument were lifted off too quickly. The other end isa stubby cone. The object appears complete, but is only 15 mm long, so although it looks like a pencil it is rather short for this purpose. It is well made, and now has an even dark brown patina. Date and function unknown.

Unidentified object made from copper alloy. It consists of a long rod, 3.5 mm square in cross-section and with the corners bevelled; one end is broken and the other end terminates in an animal's head and a junction with a second missing element. There is a gently curving bend both downwards and sideways before the break, which has apparently caused no stress to the metal; it is hard to see if this is original or not, although the fact that the terminal end is also slightly downcurving might indicate that at least part is original. It is perhaps easiest to describe the decoration fro…

Fragment of cast copper alloy. The fragment is curved, with two parallel bands of rounded convex moulding on the exterior; both bands have damage to them (hammer marks) and between these the metal is rough. The interior has a series of parallel flat facets, striations and hollows, set perpendicular to the mouldings on the exterior. All the edges have fresh unworn breaks, indicating that the metal is quite brittle. The metal is patinated a dark green all over, including the breaks. Length perpendicular to mouldings, 7 mm. Width parallel to mouldings, 28 mm. Thickness 4 mm. It is …

Gilded copper-alloy oval disc, now very corroded, measuring 39 x 35 mm. Very slightly convex, it is decorated on the outer face with a border of circular stamps, running all of the way around the edge and enclosing seven transverse rows of similar stamps. There are no stamps at the top - at least one if not two rows are missing - and here there is a roughly cut, or perhaps worn, oblique oval hole. This seems to have neater edges on the reverse, and so may have been cut from this side. The decoration dates it to the medieval period. This object is about the right size for a horse-h…

Unidentified object. Made from lead, it is roughly circular but all its edges may be broken. It is slightly dished, and on the convex face is a raised circle 13 mm in diameter in which is a relief mark, perhaps a W with a horizontal line through it, or perhaps a pair of Xs. On the concave face, opposite the mark, is a sunken square measuring 3 x 5 mm. It has been suggested that this might be the base of a pewter vessel, and Roman, but no parallel has been found.

Narrow copper-alloy spike, circular in cross-section and tapering from 3 mm in diameter at the wider end. A transverse slot 2 mm wide has been formed near this end, pushing the metal out slightly to either side. There is also a tiny projection from the centre of the wider end. Although it is now worn and corroded, there are traces of gilding on the surface. The wear and corrosion make it difficult to tell if the wider end is original or broken; the projection may suggest that it is original. The condition has also revealed some fine longitudinal ridges which may be the result of t…

Unidentified object made from copper alloy. It is the shape of a modern split pin, with an expanded loop 11 mm wide. The cross-section at the loop is 5 mm wide and flat, but as the loop tapers into the shafts the cross-section becomes narrower and thicker before flattening again to the now bent and distorted points. Length as now bent, 44 mm. The condition of the metal is peculiar; pale grey with orange patches, it looks almost like iron but does not react to a magnet. Date unknown; possibly modern.
