Record ID: SF5747
Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment from body of small bronze socketed axe. Both faces are severely crushed, with traces of small hammer marks. Possible stub of loop on one side. All breaks appear ancient. Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Part of triple-pelleted bronze socketed axe with single loop, with the socket containing a fragment of another socketed axe (SF5749). If the loop of axe SF5748 is held to the right, the loop of axe SF5749 (in socket of SF5748) will be facing forward. SF5748 is miscast, though still functional (the casting seams have been cleaned); a shortage of bronze has resulted in the standard double mouth moulding on one face, but only the lower mouth moulding on the opposite face. There are simple triple pellets, more pronounced on one face. The axe is concavely crushed just above the break on…

Fragment of socket from plain bronze socketed axe with single loop, found within the socket of SF5748. Standard double mouth moulding, though lower moulding very slight. Casting flash on seam above loop still in situ, though apparently cleaned below loop. Remaining casting spur from (paired) sprue quite prominent at top of socket. Series of small casting voids on interior and in broken section. Patinated dark brown/green with extensive paler green corrosion products. Surviving length 55 mm, weight 43.1g. Soil from the socket cavity bagged and retained separately.

Object type: RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small chunky cast copper-alloy ring. 17.5 mm in external diameter and 10 mm in internal diameter, it is circular (c. 3.5 mm diameter) in cross-section. The ring is extremely simple with only a couple of casting flaws and a small patch of corrosion. It is therefore hard to date, but must be medieval or earlier.

Copper-alloy tubular tailpipe, part of a holder for a ramrod. At one end the object is a hollow, octagonally facetted tube; this end would have received the ramrod. The tube is bordered at either end with a moulding around the front five facets. The rear three facets are undecorated, but the central one has a longitudinal rectangular projecting lug, 10 mm long and 2 mm thick, which has a central circular perforation. This lug would have served to attach the ramrod to the wooden base of the gun's barrel (the stock), which is why the decoration is confined to the front and sides. Bel…

Unusual cast copper-alloy and corroded iron mount/terminal, probably from a knife with an iron tang. It is unusual because of its decoration, which consists of a female double faced head. The base is a thick circular disc 13 mm in diameter. It has a groove around its circumference, and on the underside is iron corrosion from a central iron shank. This disc replaces the neck; above it is are the heads. The rear quarter or so of the heads are fused, and the hairstyles and faces (although worn and corroded ) look identical. The hair has a centre parting and seems to be loosely gathe…

Gilded copper-alloy buckle plate of medieval date. It is rectangular and small, just 15mm wide. It is broken at two hinge loops (worn breaks) and the surviving length is 20mm. It weighs 1.2g. There is a rivet hole at each corner, all now empty. Gilding survives around the rivet holes, suggesting that the surface here was once protected by large rivet heads. There is also gilding on the more complete stub of hinge loop. A groove divides the hinge loops from the rest of the plate, but there is no other engraved decoration that survives. The reverse is undecorated. It is likely to b…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Part of the handle of a copper-alloy spoon, ending in a large 'strawberry' knop. The stem is a flattened hexagon in shape, 5 mm wide and 3 mm thick, and the break is fairly worn. The knop is large and resembles a raspberry more than a strawberry. It is also flattened so that its cross-section is a pointed oval rather than a circle; the maximum dimensions are 15 x 11 mm. The knop is separated from the stem by a double collar. Surviving total length, 64 mm. Spoons with 'strawberry' knops are fairly rare and appear to be mainly of 16th and 17th century date.

Circular brooch or buckle frame with the loop from the pin surviving. The ring is a slightly irregular 26 mm in diameter, with a flattened area on the exterior which may be the result of the casting process. It is sub-square or sub-circular in cross-section, measuring roughly 2.5 mm wide and 2.5 mm thick. There is no pin constriction or decoration, and so following Egan and Pritchard this is classed as a buckle rather than a brooch. The loop is a piece of flat copper-alloy strip 4 mm wide, wrapped around the frame and with the shaft broken off. There is a slightly thinner part of t…
