Head and bow from a copper-alloy small-long brooch. The head is square and has a border of deep but indistinct punchmarks around three edges, with the lowest edge next to the bow undecorated. The top and sides each have a tiny knob; the knobs are all identical, with half-round moulding decorated with a fine groove, then a broader groove, then a hemispherical terminal which may once have had a fine groove across its base. On the reverse of the headplate is what is probably a single pin bar lug now hidden in a mass of iron corrosion from the pin bar and spring. The bow has a flat pan…

Fragment of rim from a cast copper-alloy cooking vessel. The exterior is roughly smoothed and the interior is more highly polished. The metal is a dark blackish-brown colour. The rim is thickened to give it a deep pointed-oval cross-section. The fragment measures 63 x 42 mm. The thickness of the body is generally 3 mm, but its maximum thickness at the rim is 7 mm. The breaks are reasonably fresh. It weighs 50.35g.
There are two other rim fragments from cooking vessels from this group of finds, all probably from different vessels. The type was in use for a long period, from th…

The thickness varies from 4 mm at the rim to 2 mm at its thinnest part. The breaks are reasonably fresh. It weighs 35.99g.

Large spherical bell made from cast copper alloy. The loop at the top is rectangular and now blocked with iron corrosion. The upper half of the bell has two circular sound holes but otherwise is undecorated. The lower half has two circular sound holes joined by a long slot.
The slot is outlined with a narrow engraved line. In the centre of the lower half is a double-line circle divided into by the slot. The two half-circles each have an engraved letter within, G above the slot and W below. Five groups of lines radiate from each half of the circle, reaching nearly to the seam.…

Cast copper-alloy spherical bell. The loop at the top is rectangular externally and a small D-shape internally. There are two sound holes in the top half and two in the bottom half, joined by a long slot; the holes are arranged so that there is one in each quarter of the bell. Both halves are decorated with a very worn grooved pattern of radiating petal shapes, there being about four in each of the spaces between the holes. The slot is also outlined with a similar narrow groove. The junction between the two halves is marked by a slightly raised and now very worn seam. The copper a…

Copper-alloy brooch in the shape of a three-dimensional bird. The bird’s head may be slightly damaged, but seems always to have had a short beak, and there are two dot eyes. The short neck curves down to continue into the back of the bird as a long ridge, with a folded wing to either side; the wings are outlined with more small dots. The dots are neater on one wing than the other. A double ridge, each one decorated with a fine groove which has now almost worn away, separates the body of the bird from the flared tail. The tail is also outlined with similar dots. On the concave un…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper-alloy buckle with central iron bar, now almost completely corroded away. One loop was originally D-shaped with a rounded interior and pointed exterior to the outer edge; the other loop was originally rectangular. The sides swell slightly in the centre to accommodate the hole drilled for the bar. The buckle is undecorated and dates to the 17th century. It measures 27 x 20 mm and is 4 mm thick at most. It weighs 3.81g.

Copper-alloy disc, 27 mm in diameter and 4 mm thick. In the centre of one face is a circular boss 8 mm in diameter, surrounded by a broad groove. There is a border around with relief decoration of eight stylised leaves, probably derived from acanthus leaf ornament. The other face is flat and undecorated with no apparent means of attachment. The decoration looks broadly neo-classical and so the object is probably 18th century, but its function is uncertain. 19.24g.

Object type: BRIDLE BIT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Circular domed mount made from copper alloy with corroded iron backing, probably a bridle boss. The copper-alloy element is 65 mm in diameter and relatively thin. It has a border groove and the flange around the dome has three evenly spaced but rather large and crudely made copper-alloy rivets which at first sight look like ring-and-dot motifs. On the reverse, corroded iron spreads from the rivets across the centre. The central dome is 30 mm in diameter and about 7 mm tall, with a slight depression and perhaps an iron rivet at the centre. There are several similar bosses recorded on t…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Chunky hooked fitting made from copper alloy. The [looped] end of the curved part of the hook is broken off, but enough survives to show that the hook's cross-section was lozengiform with a lower carination internally and a higher one externally. The hook itself is large and the break is relatively fresh. On the back of the hook is a raised flattened area. The surviving end, near the raised flattened area, turns a right angle, but keeps the same cross-section, and becomes a straight shaft decorated with diagonal grooves running across the carination to give a twisted cable effect. Thi…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Hook-piece from a small flat rectangular book-clasp, made from a brownish copper alloy. The hook is narrow and springs from a slightly expanded square area decorated with some very faint longitudinal grooves. These fade out further down the object where there is a small copper-alloy rivet. The grooves then return and there are two further rivet holes, both now empty, before the clasp flares slightly into a shaped end, one corner of which is now missing. The object is now slightly bent but the original length was 51 mm; it is 8 mm wide for most of its length, but slightly wider at b…

Very chunky circular button made from a heavily leaded cast copper alloy. The button is thick, flat and nearly circular, 27 x 29 mm, and is decorated with a central larger boss surrounded by 8 smaller bosses. The central boss has a slight projection on the top. The flat reverse has a bold casting seam and a large squarish central projecting lug with a small circular perforation in the centre. The thickness with the lug is 15 mm. Incomplete Colchester two-piece brooch made from copper alloy. The bow is decorated with two slight longitudinal ridges, each transversely ribbed. The foot is missing (old break) and there are hints of slight transverse ridging across the lower part of the bow near the break. The two ridges merge at the top of the bow to develop into a central crest which has a notch cut across it; behind the notch are two perforations for the axis bar and the chord of the spring. There is iron corrosion blocking the lower hole, presumably from the axis bar, but there is a small fragment of copper-…

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Small triangular copper-alloy pendant from medieval horse-harness. The lower edge is straight and just 10 mm wide with one face (presumably the reverse) undecorated. At first sight the other face also appears to be undecorated, but on closer inspection a small patch of red enamel is visible, and over the rest of the pendant there seems to be very fine keying, probably for further enamelling. At the apex of the pendant is a 6 mm wide loop, turned through 90° and pierced with an oval hole. The pendant is in total 26 mm long.
This pendant is very small when compared with most medi…

Object type: CANDLE HOLDER
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Socket and part of stem from a copper-alloy candle-holder or candlestick. The socket is 22 mm in external diameter and has very faint traces of circumferential decoration; a groove very near the mouth, and a slight ridge halfway down the socket. The socket is straight for a length of 30 mm and then narrows, but is still hollow, to form a hollow and undecorated stem 12 mm in diameter. The candle-holder fragment is 75 mm long. The break is fairly recent.
This type of straight cylindrical socket dates from the 15th or 16th century (Brownsword 1985).
