Object type: SPOON
Broad period: ROMAN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Terminal of a cignus type Roman spoon in the form of a bird's head; the rest of the handle and the spoon bowl are missing. The head is long and narrow, with a flaring, round-ended beak. A groove around this forms the mouth, and has small jagged notches forming teeth. There is a humped brow over the eyes, and between the vertical wall of this and the horizontal beak is a ridged moulding. There is an eye to either side of the brow; on one side this consists of a circular groove with an S-shaped eyebrow above, but on the other side the eye is made from the curled end of the eyebrow. The …

Cast copper-alloy object of unknown date and function. Oval in section, it is 20 mm long and flares from 11 x 9 mm at the narrower end to 19.5 x 9 mm at the wider end. A central circular perforation runs all the way along the long axis, but is now blocked by iron corrosion (a magnet is slightly attracted). The wider end has a U-shaped cut-out in the centre; the 'shoulders' on either side are slightly expanded and cut into four angled facets. Although the object is very worn, hints of stamped or engraved decoration can be seen. On each of the larger faces, below the U-shaped cut-o…

Copper-alloy hilt-plate from a knife handle. Basically pointed-oval in shape with one end squared off, one face has a rectangular hole for the whittle tang and the other has a slot, open at the squared end, for the blade. The edges around the slot are bevelled. 17 x 11 mm, and 10 mm thick.

Curved arm from a locking buckle, made from copper alloy. One end is narrow and cylindrical, and would have passed through a rectangular frame to create the bar. The arm then becomes thicker and pointed-oval in section, and curves to form a U shape which ends in a globular terminal which has decorative diagonal grooving (sometimes called 'wrythen'). 14th century.

Lead-alloy disc, now a misshapen oval, perhaps with cut edges. The thickness tapers from one shorter edge to the other, and there are some holes in the edge which suggest that the disc may have been made by squashing together two or more thinner pieces. The disc is decorated on one face with a probable shield, on which is a cross with short equal round-ended arms. There also seem to be some small pellets on the shield. Around the edge are the remains of a ?beaded circular border. The other face has an ?oval pelleted border which appears to enclose some large crude unreadable lettering…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Part of a buckle which originally had an integral plate and frame. All edges are now broken, but the plate was probably originally rectangular. Engraved decoration of a double-strand saltire within a rectangular border survives, with a short dash of engraving in each angle. Just off-centre are the remains of a small copper-alloy rivet. In the centre of one short side is a sub-rectangular pin hole. All of the frame is missing. All breaks are old. A very worn and corroded object!

Small square buckle plate with frame recesses and pin slot, broken at both hinge loops. Traces of gilding at the base of the pin slot. Most of the plate is taken up with a sunken field on which is a single obliquely set raised initial - perhaps a Lombardic (rounded) C or G. The plate has been treated recently with a very shiny coating which makes it hard to see if there was ever any enamel around the initial. In the two outer corners are circular rivet holes. Width of plate 20 mm; length without hinge loops 19.5 mm, with hinge loops 24.5 mm.

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk

Unusually large copper-alloy strap-slide, now a bit bent but originally rectangular or slightly trapezoidal. The shorter side is 23 mm long and has, unusually, two separate internal copper-alloy rivets, each with an ?integral circular rove. The longer side is 25.5 mm long and has a slight knop at either end, and a large solid-domed oval lobe in the centre decorated with three transverse grooves. The other two sides, oddly, also seem to be of unequal length - 20 and 21.5 mm. 13th or 14th century.

Lead ?spindle whorl, circular with a central perforation. Flat and plano-convex, the rounded face is decorated with raised ribs, some of which radiate and others which might be pseudo-letters. The dating of these decorated whorls is difficult; suggestions have included Roman, late Anglo-Saxon and medieval, but the last seems most likely.
