Copper-alloy object, perhaps a mount. It is thin and flat, and consists of a rectangular plate 17.7mm x 15.0mm with a 7.2mm wide tab projecting from the centre of one long edge. The rectangular area has three decoratively shaped edges, each with a long convex curve in the centre. The long decorated edge has two small nicks to either side of this curve, creating three smaller outcurving scallops; the short decorated edges each have two nicks above and a single nick below.
The undecorated long edge has the projecting tab, which is decorated with six parallel grooves running to…

Piece of copper-alloy strip, flat and rectangular in cross-section, decorated on one face with a row of small stamped annulets, c. 1mm in diameter. They are evenly spaced, about 1.5mm apart, and flanked by a shallow border groove down one edge of the strip. At one end, the strip is bent forward and broken; the other end may be original. There is damage to the surface about halfway along, suggesting further front-to back bending has taken place. The strip curves very slightly to one side (so that the grooved border is along the convex curve) but this appears to be an original featu…

Object type: BRACELET
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published
Fragment of two strand, cable twisted copper-alloy wire, probably part of a late Roman bracelet. Around 55mm (unbent length) survives, bent into a U-shaped curve so that it now measures 27mm long by 26mm wide.
The two strands appear to have been originally round-section but to have been hammered together after they were twisted, to form an oval-section hoop 4 x 3mm in cross-section. The strands are now each c. 2.5 to 3mm wide on the hammered surface. At one end, one strand is neatly finished and the other is more circular in cross-section (c. 2.4mm diameter), sugge…

Fragment of curved copper-alloy rod, probably part of a small bracelet. It is a tall D-shape in cross-section, 3.6mm wide and 2.7mm thick, with a flat interior and curved exterior. Both squared-off ends are very worn, but one appears to be a worn break and the other to be an original animal-head terminal, with two broad grooves or concave areas forming two low bumps, one longer and a little higher and one shorter, right at the end of the frame. No other decoration can be seen to survive.
If the curve of the surviving fragment is extended, it seems that it represents about a …

Large Roman copper-alloy mount with integral rivet. The front is conical, now a little bent. The sides are slightly concave in side view, and rise from a circular edge 25mm in diameter to a rounded point. The reverse is hollow, and the integral rivet projects from the centre. Its circular-section shaft is 3.3mm in minimum diameter and ends in a large integrally cast disc 10mm in diameter. The object is 15.0mm in total height with the front and the rivet each making up about half of this. It has a pale green surface and weighs 6.0g.
The integral rivet with large flat rove is…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Small fragment of copper-alloy medieval finger-ring with probable glass setting. It consists of a raised sub-conical bezel with a sub-circular sunken centre in which there is an incomplete shiny turquoise setting, probably glass. There is a broad groove or step across the bezel to either side of the setting, making a kind of shoulder, after which the hoop tapers to the breaks. The entire object, including the breaks, is worn. Surviving width from side to side, 13.0mm. Surviving length parallel to this, 6.7mm. Thickness (width of bezel) 5.1mm; depth of bezel (thickne…

Workflow stage: Published
Fragment of copper-alloy Roman finger-ring of Guiraud type 3c. The bezel is oval, curved on the interior to fit around the finger, and sunken on the top to hold what was probably enamel; traces of a brownish material survive. One shoulder survives, with a narrowed concave waist at the junction with the bezel, then a short D-section length tapering to the fairly fresh break. The bezel is 10.0mm long, 7.3mm wide and 2.0mm thick in the centre; the surviving width of the entire ring is 14.5mm and the length from top of bezel to break in hoop is 7.6mm. It weighs 1.1g.

Complete small Roman finger-ring, of Guiraud's type 2f and Henig's type VIII, probably made from silver (needs confirmation by XRF). The hoop is oval internally (16.6mm in width and 14.7mm deep) but angled or 'keeled' externally. The hoop flares gently from a rectangular-section area at the back to the angled sides, and then flares more strongly to decorated shoulders. These have a V-shaped groove emphasising the flare, with the space above the groove ending in two small projections next to the bezel. Below the groove, there is a further tiny nick i…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Complete cast copper-alloy medieval mount in the shape of a crowned facing head. The crown is very schematic, being a triangle with oblique grooves suggesting a central trefoil. Below this, the face is convex, rising to a central point between the eyes, and equally schematic; it consists of a pair of triangular grooves, bases facing each other, forming eyes (half-obscured by corrosion) and two diverging oblique grooves indicating the nose. Below the chin is a tiny stub of neck. The reverse is hollowed, and has a spiked rivet in the centre. Rivets on mounts such as these …

Object type: PENDANT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published
Near-complete copper-alloy Roman pendant in the shape of a phallus. It is long, thin and straight, the penis measuring 31.6mm long and the single surviving testicle slightly offset to bring the total length up to 32.1mm. It tapers with straight sides from 5.0mm wide at the rounded base of the penis to 3.0mm wide at the rounded tip, which is accentuated with a transverse groove. The surviving width is 8.6mm and it weighs 2.8g.
The pendant has a flat reverse, so that the penis is D-shaped and the testicle a low dome in cross-section. On the reverse is an integrally D…

Fragment of copper-alloy late Iron Age or Roman bow brooch, consisting of the very end of the foot only, with part of a perforated catchplate. The rounded-section bow is very narrow at just 2.4mm wide. On the reverse, the catchplate could be described as perforated (or pierced) or framed, in that the (now incomplete) triangular perforation neatly follows the line of the edge of the catchplate. One side is turned over to the left (when viewing the brooch from the reverse). The breaks are worn. The surviving length of the bow is 10.7mm, less than that of the catchplate; th…

Head and top of bow from a copper-alloy Roman brooch of Langton Down type, dating to c. 25-c. 60 AD. The head is formed from a thin sheet cylinder, complete on the left side (looking from the front) but the front missing on the right. There is no trace of decoration on the front of the head, but a seam can just about be seen along the reverse, with the slot for the pin in the centre. The inside of the head is filled with hard corrosion products, probably from an iron spring bar. The D-section bow tapers from 11.2mm wide at the top to 7.2mm wide at the broken end. It has a rid…

Largely complete copper-alloy Colchester one-piece brooch of late Iron Age to early Roman date (c. 20-c. 65 AD). The bow is oval in cross-section, with no decoration surviving. At the top are a pair of rectangular, flat-section wings, with a long forward-facing hook above. The hook still retains the chord of the spring, half of which survives, with three coils on the right (as you look at the reverse). The left-hand end of the spring, and the pin, are missing along with any axis bar. The bow tapers downwards towards a missing foot (fairly old break), with a stub of catchplate on t…

Bow of a worn copper-alloy early Anglo-Saxon brooch, probably a cruciform but alternatively perhaps a small-long brooch, dating to c. 450-550 AD.
It measures 21.0mm long, weighs 5.2g, and tapers from 11.0mm in the centre to 10.0mm wide at one end and 9.2mm wide at the other. The wider end has a very short flat panel that is probably also the broken springing of the bow, and the narrower end has a longer flat panel that is decorated with three transverse grooves. In between, the body of the bow is arched so that it is 9.1mm thick. It has a flat band down the centre…

Cast copper-alloy near-complete object, probably part of a knife handle. Made from cast copper alloy, one end is a short hollow tube, retaining some of the original edge at this end. In cross-section this end is heptagonal or seven-sided, with a narrow facet at the top and sides, and a pointed base. The junction between this and the other, flatter end is marked on either side with a ridge marking out a hexagon. In the centre of this, the cross-section is angled in and the base flares out, resulting in a long cross-section the shape of a knife blade, with a narrow flat to…
