Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
A Roman cast copper-alloy mount of 'bell-shaped stud' type dating to circa AD 43-410. The iron attachment has nearly corroded away, but originally protruded from a short cylinder which then flares out into a wide shallow bell shape. On the 'underside' of the flared area is a narrow groove around a dished area, with a tall narrow cylindrical boss projecting from the centre. The mount is deep enough to get your fingers around, so it may be a functional knob rather than purely decorative.

Object type: WINDOW GLASS
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
Fragment of Roman window glass with one original edge. A translucent pale greyish green in colour, both faces are matt but one is much rougher than the other. (This is caused by blowing a cylinder, cutting it up one side and allowing it to flatten onto a sand bed). 37.5 mm long (parallel to the original edge) and 19 mm wide, and just over 5 mm thick. The original edge is rounded, but slopes much more gently to the smoother face.

Fragment of window glass with small length of original edge. A translucent darkish turquoise, one face is matt and the other has a slight sheen with very fine striations parallel to the original edge. The original edge is evenly rounded to form a U shape. 22 mm long (perpendicular to the original edge) and 20 mm wide, and 3.5 mm thick. One oval air bubble (from blowing) survives.

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
Cast copper-alloy object of unknown date and function. Oval in section, it is 20 mm long and flares from 11 x 9 mm at the narrower end to 19.5 x 9 mm at the wider end. A central circular perforation runs all the way along the long axis, but is now blocked by iron corrosion (a magnet is slightly attracted). The wider end has a U-shaped cut-out in the centre; the 'shoulders' on either side are slightly expanded and cut into four angled facets. Although the object is very worn, hints of stamped or engraved decoration can be seen. On each of the larger faces, below the U-shaped cut-o…

Object type: BEAD
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
Small copper-alloy 'bead', 11 mm in external diameter and biconical with a 5 mm diameter perforation. 5 mm thick. Much of the surface is lost through corrosion. These objects are very difficult to date, but the suspicion that they may be Roman is heightened by the fact that this one was found with 5 Roman coins. They are also difficult to assign a function to; they may be decorative rings mounted on a slim shaft, or they may indeed be beads with wide perforations.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
Oval mount with single sturdy integral rivet on reverse. The head is pointed oval in shape, flat on the reverse and domed on the front, with relief decoration of a very narrow raised pointed oval field running down the centre, with a longitudinal flute down the middle. The rivet is circular in section and tapers slightly to a squared end. It bears a resemblance to Roman 'vulvate' or 'coffee-bean' mounts, and was found with 5 Roman coins. The integral rivet also points to a Roman date.

Object type: BRACELET
Broad period: ROMAN

Workflow stage: Published
Terminal from a large snake bracelet. 10 mm wide at the break, it is of low D-shaped section 1 mm thick at the break. The break is old. The terminal flares to 14.5 mm wide and 4 mm thick to form the head, then curves round to form the jaws. There is a lot of bubbly corrosion which obscures any possible decoration. The fragment has a smooth curve and is 38.5 mm long.

Terminal from a snake bracelet. 5 mm wide and nearly 2 mm thick at the old break, it flares to 7 mm wide and 2 mm thick for the snake's head, then tapers again to 4 mm wide. There is decoration of three longitudinal rows of transverse rectangular stamps; there may be different dotted decoration on the head, but corrosion has removed most of the detail. The head ends in a transverse groove, perhaps representing the mouth. The fragment has a smooth curve and is 45 mm long.

Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
Small copper-alloy rotary key, missing most of its bow. The bow was set at right angles to the usual medieval or modern bow, so that it appeared ring-shaped when the key was viewed from above (see scan). Only a tiny fragment of bow now survives (fairly old breaks), with a rectangular moulding at its junction with the stem. The stem is circular in section and solid, with a small dimple at the tip which is in line with the front edge of the bit. On its underside is a bit with a cleft at the top front edge and a downwards projection also in line with the front edge; the bit also has some…

Object type: BUCKLE

County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
Buckle frame with zoomorphic decoration, of Hawkes and Dunning (1961) type 1B. In poor condition and unfinished, it is D-shaped with a straight bar on which a slightly off-centre casting sprue survives; casting flashes are visible around the edge of the buckle. The outer edge is formed by two face-to-face dolphins' heads, each with a ring-and-dot eye and open jaw, with a lozengiform moulding in between. On top of the dolphins' heads, the crests have developed into back-to-back horses' heads. These are more fragmentary but again each horse has a ring-and-dot eye. Only one face of the f…

Broad period: ROMAN

Workflow stage: Published
Upholstery tack with tapering square-section shaft and circular hollow-domed head. The head is fairly flat on the top, perhaps as a result of hammering. Length 14 mm, maximum diameter of head 13 mm. Upholstery tacks were used in the Roman and post-medieval periods and the two can be impossible to tell apart. This example is very corroded and came from an area with many Roman finds, so may be Roman.

Object type: STUD
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
Copper-alloy stud with sub-circular flat head and circular-section shaft. The head may have once been circular, but if so the edges have very old breaks. One edge is formed by a rather clumsy cut. The head dimensions are 12 x 9 mm and the shaft is 6 mm long including the 1 mm thickness of the head. The shaft runs down to a rounded end which may be a very old break. A nice grey-green colour, and just possibly Roman.

Workflow stage: Published
Fragment of miniature stand or altar. Made of copper alloy, one corner survives complete with its leg, measuring 28.5 mm from the top of the knob to the slightly out-turned foot. An adjacent corner has lost its leg (old break) but retains its knob; although the side joining these two corners is now bent, it must have been c. 24 mm long. The side has an incurved base, between the two legs, and is decorated with two relief trefoil leaves. The inside of one leaf has traces of red enamel, but none of the enamel from the other leaf or the recessed background survives. Fragments of two o…

One corner of a miniature stand or altar. Made of copper alloy, one corner has its upper knob surviving but is missing its leg. Two sides survive incomplete. One is decorated with a recessed rectangular panel containing a raised quatrefoil within a circle. The other has a recessed panel with bilobed end containing two raised curving bands. No enamel survives in either panel. Below the decorated panels, the leg and bottom of the sides appears to have been cut off in a neat straight line, perhaps in antiquity.
