Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete copper-alloy buckle in the shape of a five-petalled flower, often thought of as a Tudor rose. Two petals survive complete, with parts of two others. The two complete petals are flat, incurved externally, and are decorated with radiating grooves within a reserved border. The circular-section bar is slightly bent towards the missing part of the frame. The buckle is worn, and bent at the worn breaks. It is relatively large for a buckle of this shape, measuring 37mm wide parallel to the bar; the surviving length perpendicular to this is c. 33mm. It is a maximum of 2.3mm thick a…

Copper-alloy full-round side knob from a cruciform brooch, with full-length iron pin bar passing through it. The dome is slightly more than hemispherical, with the widest point just above a pair of neat fine grooves around the base of the dome. A concave narrowed waist is below, with a minimum diameter of 5.5mm. Below this is a base 3mm deep, decorated around its circumference with three slightly wider and more carelessly applied grooves, which here appear lathe-turned. A tab projects from the base; this is curved in cross-section and has an incomplete lower edge. Behind the tab are t…

Fragment of copper-alloy composite buckle, now very bent. The frame has been broken on one side and is now very bent out of shape. A pointed pin rest survives with a slight groove on its internal edge. There is another break at the pin constriction, with a little of one half of the forked spacer surviving, with most of the prong missing (old break). The other two breaks are not particularly worn. Measurements are hard to take due to distortion; it weighs 3.9g. 14th century.

Incomplete gilded copper-alloy buckle plate, rectangular with five copper-alloy rivets. One end is neatly rectilinear, then it tapers very slightly to the centre, which is crossed by a fine engraved line. It then flares very slightly to two broken hinge loops; the base of the pin slot between them is clear. The rivets are all knob-headed, 3.5 to 4mm in diameter, bringing the maximum thickness to 5.7mm. The metal has corroded to a reddish brown colour with flecks of gilding. It measures 25.7mm long and 16.7mm wide, and weighs 3.3g. 13th or 14th century.

About half of a flat circular frame, decorated on one face, probably an incomplete annular brooch. It is made from thin sheet, 0.6mm thick and 26.5mm in diameter, with a 12.5mm circular hole in the centre. The external edge is fragmentary, but appears to have had a series of small projections spaced about 2mm apart. The frame is decorated with a neat compass-drawn double-strand border around a series of oblique grooves forming a zig-zag (or triangles with the apexes outwards). The lines do not quite meet at the apexes of the triangles. Four of the triangles survive of a probable origi…

Fragment of rim from a cast copper alloy cooking vessel. Using a rim diameter chart the overall diameter of the rim appears to be c. 25cm. In cross-section the rim is thickened to 5.6mm, and out-turned with a slightly concave exterior; it then tapers to a sharp edge. A short length of the body or side wall of the vessel survives, 4.0mm thick at the break. The interior is concave in cross-section below the thickened rim. The interior is polished smooth, with a grey patina which is worn away on the thickest part of the rim. The exterior is rougher, and sooted. Length 94mm, width of frag…

Fragment of copper-alloy buckle frame, both breaks fairly fresh. It was originally oval, with an offset narrowed bar and a flattened, expanded outside edge which is decorated with a slightly raised triangular moulding within its width. There was probably a second identical moulding at the other side, but the buckle is broken across what is probably the centre. The apex of the triangle points inwards. Just over half of a double-loop buckle frame (worn breaks). The surviving loop is a long D shape internally, with a narrowed bar slightly bent towards the outside edge. Copper-alloy hooked tag, now bent and cracked, and with the hook largely missing. The plate is openwork, with a central solid roundel bordered by a ridge.
