Cast copper-alloy leg from a medieval cooking vessel. It is roughly rectangular in cross-section, 32 x 14mm at the break, with a very slight midrib down the centre. It flares smoothly to the out-turned foot, and there is no break between the two. The foot is triangular in side view, with a trapezoidal base 39mm wide at most and 22mm deep. It is 47mm long and weighs 109.5g. There is no particularly close parallel in Butler and Green 2003; it is fairly similar to one from a 14th-century context in Winchester (Biddle 1990, no. 3386).

Fragment of rim from a cast copper alloy cooking vessel. Using a rim diameter chart the overall diameter of the rim appears to be c. 25cm. In cross-section the rim is thickened to 5.6mm, and out-turned with a slightly concave exterior; it then tapers to a sharp edge. A short length of the body or side wall of the vessel survives, 4.0mm thick at the break. The interior is concave in cross-section below the thickened rim. The interior is polished smooth, with a grey patina which is worn away on the thickest part of the rim. The exterior is rougher, and sooted. Length 94mm, width of frag…

Lead pot mend, one face larger, flatter and sub-triangular, the other smaller, lumpier and D-shaped. The larger face measures 21 x 23mm and has concentric wrinkles, probably caused by shrinkage on cooling. The smaller face measures 17 x 13mm. The total thickness is 8mm and the object weighs 15.72g. Probably medieval, possibly Roman.

Oval lead pot mend, both faces of similar size and relatively smooth. One face is 26 x 22mm, thicker with rounded edges; the other is 25x 22mm and thinner. The space in between is narrow but may have been flattened. No obvious pottery survives. It is c. 8mm thick at most, and weighs 25.96g. Probably medieval, possibly Roman.

Complete vessel leg from a cast copper-alloy ewer or possibly a cooking vessel, either made separately from the rest of the vessel and soldered on, or a repair. The leg is a tall D shape in cross-section, flat on the reverse and curved at the front, and tapers from 17mm wide and 18mm thick at the top to 11.5mm wide and 14.5mm thick close to the bottom. Here it turns a sharp angle and continues to taper, forming a foot with a flat base and a rounded toe. The foot is 22mm long. At the top of the leg there is a small sub-circular area of vessel wall cast in one with the leg. This is cove…

Part of a handle lug from a medieval or post-medieval copper-alloy cooking vessel, circular in cross-section. About half survives, running from one end which is wider (a maximum of 22mm across) and whose very end retains the very smooth interior surface of the vessel; this is at right angles to the edges of the lug. It then has a faint hint of a circumferential moulding, and tapers to 17mm diameter. At the other end, it is broken across the corner, which appears to have been angled. The break is worn and sooted; there is sooting on all surfaces, apparently including the scrap of inter…

Fragment of cast copper-alloy leg and foot from a medieval or early post-medieval cooking vessel. The fragment is relatively thin at the worn break, largely rectangular in cross-section but with a slight midrib. It thickens towards the base and then widens and turns out, flaring in cross-section with a slight concave curve towards the front, to form a minimal foot. The reverse and underside are flat. All faces apart from the break are sooted. The cross-section at the top is 30mm wide and 5-7mm thick. The foot is 35mm wide and 13mm thick. It is 32mm long at most, and weighs 47.8g.…

Suspension lug from a medieval to early post-medieval vessel, made from copper-alloy sheet folded in half and secured by a single rivet made from rolled copper-alloy sheet. The lug is trapezoidal, flaring from a narrow base 20mm wide to a maximum of 33mm wide just below the fold. The corners of the fold are cut off at an angle making the fold 25mm wide. At the widest point, an oval hole has been pushed through both halves leaving a burr of bent-over sheet fragments on one side. The hole measures 10mm tall by 7mm wide. The lug is 6mm thick at the open end and 3mm thick at the fold. The…

Base of small cast copper-alloy leg from a medieval or post-medieval cooking vessel. At the break it is D-shaped or sub-oval in cross-section, 20 x 7mm. It is 23mm long and has very slightly flaring sides, to a base which turns out to make a foot; this flares to a maximum of 24.5mm wide. The foot has a flat base and brings the total thickness to 14mm. It weighs 28.4g.

Cast copper-alloy leg from a cooking vessel. At the top it retains some of the integrally cast body of the vessel. The leg itself is D-shaped in cross-section with a prominent midrib which runs the full length of the leg and up onto the body of the vessel. It tapers from about 34mm wide where it joins the body, to 20mm wide at the base; the sides are straight. About 15mm above the base there is a transverse moulding which runs over, but does not interrupt, the midrib. The flat reverse retains sooting. Total length including some of vessel body, 90mm. Lead pot mend or vessel repair. One face is smooth, flat and sub-rectangular, measuring c. 36 x 26mm and generally c. 7mm thick. The other half is a solid domed oval lump of lead, measuring c. 31 x 21mm and c. 12mm thick. The two halves are not oriented in the same plane, so the total length is c. 39mm and the total width c. 32mm. Between the two are sandwiched dark grey fragments of pottery of reduced fabric, identified by Andrew Rogerson as likely to be medieval. He further comments that the fragments are likely to be from the base of a pot as the thickness varies from 3mm to 6mm. T…

Fragment of rim from a cast copper-alloy cooking vessel. The exterior is roughly smoothed with a good deal of sooting from the cooking fire, and the interior is very smoothly polished.
