Object consisting of a copper-alloy rod with an ornate terminal. The rod is hexagonally facetted in section, 4 x 4 mm. The terminal makes up over half of the length, and starts with a narrow moulding running around the whole of the section, then a wider biconical moulding, and then a 9 mm diameter ring with a long pointed knop at the end. The other end of the rod is flattened and perhaps broken (old break). The object is a little reminiscent of composite strap-ends, but one of these would have plates soldered to either face of the ring, which are impossible in this case because of …

Rectangular-section (3 x 2 mm) copper-alloy rod, now bent. At one end the section flattens to a 2 mm square and then expands, possibly being broken at a perforation (if so, very old break). At the centre, the rod is bent through nearly 90 degrees; towards the other end the section becomes square and there are two flattened expanded lobes, one beyond the other. All these expanded areas are c. 4 mm wide. The rod is again bent at this point. The object is corroded to a matt brown, which can be a characteristic of late post-medieval copper alloys. Unbent length c. 60 mm.

Cast copper-alloy object. Circular (16 mm diameter) and plano-convex (4 mm thick), it has a central circular perforation 4 mm in diameter with rounded corners at either end. The low rounded face is badly pitted and corroded. The matt pale green patina and chunky proportions would not be out of place in the Roman period, or earlier, but no close parallel has been found.

Lead object consisting of an oval ring, 27 x 18 mm, with an 8 mm wide projection coming off the centre of one long side. The projection is 26 mm long, and ends in a chisel-like point with one face corroded and patinated and the other apparently fresh. The entire object has a flat unfinished reverse, and a more rounded shape on the front. It looks a little like a model for a key or similar. Overall length 40 mm.

Unidentified object made from copper alloy and iron. It is flattish and consists of a disc with a long pointed projection. The disc is 16 mm in diameter and mainly composed of iron, with a depression in the centre which may once have been a perforation. Around the edge of the disc, at least on one face, is a short length of copper alloy which curves around and then projects out to end in what may be a relief animal head. The poor condition of the object means that it is hard to decide even if the animal head is in profile or full-face; it is just possible that it has been subjecte…

Fragment of unidentified object made of copper alloy, perhaps part of a decorative binding ring. Part of a hollow cylinder survives, with a thick triangular projection extending at right angles to the cylinder on the outside. The inside of the cylinder has a brown corrosion that is not found elsewhere on the fragment. The cylinder fragment measures 20 x 15 mm (one of the short edges being a probable original edge); the projection measures 7 x 13 mm at base and is 11 mm tall.

Piece of thin copper-alloy sheet cut into a long lozenge and now slightly curved in section along the long axis. Just off centre is a small circular boss with hollow reverse showing some ?iron staining. One of the edges is rounded and the others have sharp edges; one has a silvery patch. There is bubbly corrosion on both front and back and the object looks old.

Unidentified object made from copper alloy. It consists of a rod of sub-square section, each side 4 mm and with rounded corners, now bent (no visible stress to the metal). At one end is a nicely modelled animal head with small knob-like ears, circular sunken eyes filled with ?glass, a short nose between rounded cheeks, and perhaps a slightly protruding tongue. If the rod is held so that both eyes are visible, the upper face is decorated with evenly spaced circular punchmarks which do not occur on the other faces. At the other end is a curious expanded ?terminal with four indentati…

Flat copper-alloy plate in the shape of a woman's head in profile, decorated on one face with an eye and low-relief hair tied with a ribbon in a bow to one side with the ends trailing down the neck. Very classical-looking, with a Roman nose and prominent chin, and curly hair held high over the forehead. The neck is cut off squarely with a slight bevel towards the reverse, undecorated face, which is rough and unfinished. The decorated face has a grey shiny coating, perhaps a white-metal coating; the reverse is much greener. It seems to have been an inlaid element of a larger object…

Copper-alloy socket fragment, perhaps from spear or gouge or chisel, etc. (too small and damaged to be able to be certain). Basically a cylinder of copper alloy, just over 2 mm thick, with ancient breaks and some crushing out of shape. Probable original diameter 12-13 mm, and possibly originally slightly tapering. Some invasive corrosion. Dark green/brown patina. Length 21 mm.

Heavy copper-alloy object consisting of a cylindrical rod and an expanded conical terminal. The conical terminal is 27 mm in diameter at its widest point, and about 24 mm long. It has a slightly rounded end which is in fairly good unbattered condition. The sloping sides have many short grooves and scratches caused by ancient damage, probably while in use; there is decoration of two encircling parallel grooves. The rod is 12 mm in diameter and there is a slight step or moulding where it joins the conical end. A small fragment of the original end of the rod survives, with below it t…

Lead-alloy disc, now a misshapen oval, perhaps with cut edges. The thickness tapers from one shorter edge to the other, and there are some holes in the edge which suggest that the disc may have been made by squashing together two or more thinner pieces. The disc is decorated on one face with a probable shield, on which is a cross with short equal round-ended arms. There also seem to be some small pellets on the shield. Around the edge are the remains of a ?beaded circular border. The other face has an ?oval pelleted border which appears to enclose some large crude unreadable lettering…

Cast copper-alloy object of unknown date and function. Oval in section, it is 20 mm long and flares from 11 x 9 mm at the narrower end to 19.5 x 9 mm at the wider end. A central circular perforation runs all the way along the long axis, but is now blocked by iron corrosion (a magnet is slightly attracted). The wider end has a U-shaped cut-out in the centre; the 'shoulders' on either side are slightly expanded and cut into four angled facets. Although the object is very worn, hints of stamped or engraved decoration can be seen. On each of the larger faces, below the U-shaped cut-o…

Flat copper-alloy disc, a slightly irregular circle c. 36 mm in diameter and now slightly bent. Holes of varying shapes and sizes have been pushed through the disc from one face to the other - a central small irregularly shaped hole (c. 1 mm across), six similar holes around, ten similar holes in a third ring, then 13 more various holes around the outside. The outer ring contains a neat circular hole of 3 mm diameter and other holes of 2 mm and I mm across. The excess metal on the 'reverse' has been hammered down. The method of construction of the holes is similar to that on mediev…

Lead alloy disc, 36.5 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick, with a ?copper-alloy tube attached to the reverse, presumably to make the object a mount, and filled with lead alloy. The front of the disc has relief decoration of a triple-strand border around two concentric hexagons both with incurved sides. In the centre of the inner hexagon are six radiating lines. This object has been shown to various curators at the British Museum (Leslie Webster and Susan Youngs of Medieval and Modern Europe, and Gareth Williams and Barrie Cook of Coins and Medals); all agree that it is very unlikely to be a…

Possible mount of probable medieval date. Rounded and slightly oval, 35 x 38 mm, it is 1-2 mm thick and very slightly curved or bent. In the centre is a neat circular hole, 5 mm in diameter, surrounded by a raised collar, now a bit squashed but still 5 mm max tall, which may originally have been the setting for a jewel. Around this was a zone of stamped decoration and then a groove, now mostly obscured by corrosion. Then there is an undecorated zone, then an outer border of stamped circles between a pair of grooves; this is interrupted by a broken circular hole, perhaps 2-3 mm in …

Unidentified copper-alloy object consisting of a rod with a loop at one end. The rod is oval in section (4 x 5 mm); its end may be original, or may be a very old break. The rod runs for 26 mm before flattening to 2mm thick in the opposite plane to the oval, expanding to a rounded shape 7.5 mm wide, and being pierced with a 3 mm diameter hole to form the loop. Total length 35 mm. Pale grey-green patina. The date is unknown, but if pressed I would guess at possibly Roman.

Unidentified copper-alloy object with corroded iron core. The copper-alloy part consists of a hollow ?terminal with one rounded end, probably with a small perforation, and one straight-cut open end. The terminal has a narrow raised band running around the centre; above and below this are rings of alternately set triangular perforations, each perforation with its base towards the raised band. An iron core has blocked all the perforations with corrosion, and has in some places burst the copper alloy. The copper alloy is also very corroded - to a dark purple colour - but looks always …
