Pottery disc, 24 mm in diameter and 5 mm thick, perhaps a counter or playing piece. One face has a large incuse letter D, with VIII in smaller lettering below. The fabric is a fine red earthenware with ferrous inclusions; this type of fabric could have been made almost anywhere in England, so gives little help in identification. The inscription could be deciphered as eight pennyweight, but in fact the disc weighs 4.47g, which is 2.87 dwt. Probably post-medieval.

Unidentified copper-alloy object. One end has a long pyramidal terminal, tapering from a maximum cross-section of 4 x 3.5 mm. Below the widest point the object then tapers again slightly to a collar, below which its cross-section is circular. The circular shaft tapers quite quickly and is bent into a loop; it ends at a globular terminal. The object is quite worn and corroded, but it appears to be complete, and the bend does not appear to have caused any stress to the metal. Date and function unknown, but it does not appear to be modern. Unbent length c. 45 mm; existing length 23 mm.

Unidentified object made from bone, ivory or antler, with ring-and-dot decoration. It is biconvex in cross-section, with one face being slightly more curved than the other. One end is basically rectangular, 32.5 x 27 mm, and each long side of this rectangle has a central V-shaped cut-out flanked by semi-circular cut-outs. Each face is decorated with 19-20 unevenly spaced ring-and-dot motifs. One corner is certainly complete; from this, a long rod extends parallel to the long edge of the rectangle, increasing the length of the object to 85 mm. The rod is 6 mm wide, and is mainly pa…

Unidentified object made from copper alloy. It consists of a long rod, 3.5 mm square in cross-section and with the corners bevelled; one end is broken and the other end terminates in an animal's head and a junction with a second missing element. There is a gently curving bend both downwards and sideways before the break, which has apparently caused no stress to the metal; it is hard to see if this is original or not, although the fact that the terminal end is also slightly downcurving might indicate that at least part is original. It is perhaps easiest to describe the decoration fro…

Unidentified object made from copper alloy. It is a hollow square in cross-section, flaring from 8 mm square at one end to 13 mm square at the other. The narrower end is undecorated for 19 mm, then there is a concave moulding around all four sides flanked by ridges. The wider end then has a double ridge which is cut across on each face by four grooves. The total length is 34 mm. Date and function unknown.

Fragment of cast copper alloy. The fragment is curved, with two parallel bands of rounded convex moulding on the exterior; both bands have damage to them (hammer marks) and between these the metal is rough. The interior has a series of parallel flat facets, striations and hollows, set perpendicular to the mouldings on the exterior. All the edges have fresh unworn breaks, indicating that the metal is quite brittle. The metal is patinated a dark green all over, including the breaks. Length perpendicular to mouldings, 7 mm. Width parallel to mouldings, 28 mm. Thickness 4 mm. It is …

Gilded copper-alloy oval disc, now very corroded, measuring 39 x 35 mm. Very slightly convex, it is decorated on the outer face with a border of circular stamps, running all of the way around the edge and enclosing seven transverse rows of similar stamps. There are no stamps at the top - at least one if not two rows are missing - and here there is a roughly cut, or perhaps worn, oblique oval hole. This seems to have neater edges on the reverse, and so may have been cut from this side. The decoration dates it to the medieval period. This object is about the right size for a horse-h…

Unidentified object. Made from lead, it is roughly circular but all its edges may be broken. It is slightly dished, and on the convex face is a raised circle 13 mm in diameter in which is a relief mark, perhaps a W with a horizontal line through it, or perhaps a pair of Xs. On the concave face, opposite the mark, is a sunken square measuring 3 x 5 mm. It has been suggested that this might be the base of a pewter vessel, and Roman, but no parallel has been found.

Narrow copper-alloy spike, circular in cross-section and tapering from 3 mm in diameter at the wider end. A transverse slot 2 mm wide has been formed near this end, pushing the metal out slightly to either side. There is also a tiny projection from the centre of the wider end. Although it is now worn and corroded, there are traces of gilding on the surface. The wear and corrosion make it difficult to tell if the wider end is original or broken; the projection may suggest that it is original. The condition has also revealed some fine longitudinal ridges which may be the result of t…

Unidentified object made from copper alloy. It is the shape of a modern split pin, with an expanded loop 11 mm wide. The cross-section at the loop is 5 mm wide and flat, but as the loop tapers into the shafts the cross-section becomes narrower and thicker before flattening again to the now bent and distorted points. Length as now bent, 44 mm. The condition of the metal is peculiar; pale grey with orange patches, it looks almost like iron but does not react to a magnet. Date unknown; possibly modern.

Unidentified copper-alloy object, perhaps a box or vessel fitting. At one end is a flattish loop 12.5 mm in diameter with a central perforation 7.5 mm in diameter; the top of this loop appears to be externally worn. An arched bar springs from the base of this loop, hexagonally facetted in cross-section; this flares slightly from 6 mm wide at the top to 8 mm wide at the bottom. The arch bends for a little longer at the bottom than at the top, meaning that the loop cannot have been used to fix the object to a flat surface. The bar then turns a right angle and becomes slightly convex…

Unidentified object made from copper alloy, rectangular and flat, measuring 22.5 x 19 x 3 mm. It is decorated on one face with a lowered border around four rectangles; the rectangles are divided by pairs of V-shaped grooves which cross in the centre to form a tiny pyramidal central boss. The reverse is undecorated. Both faces are very rough, due to corrosion bubbles or encrustations. The edges are equally rough and corroded and may possibly be broken. There is no means of attachment and the function and date of this object is unknown.

An unidentified object made from lead. The base is rectangular (20 x 13 mm) with a rectangular projection at each corner bringing the maximum dimensions up to 23 x 17 mm; it is 10-11 mm thick. The rectangular projections continue up the base on the long edges but not on the short edges, giving a tapering effect. Unidentified object, perhaps a pendant, made from gilded copper alloy. It is basically a circular disc, 20 mm in diameter, with a head in high relief in the centre. The head has an elaborate hairstyle, with perhaps two horizontal rolls at the top and then a curly side-lock to either side. The facial features are worn away; there is a short neck. Around the head are small punchmarks, perhaps dots. There seems to be a scalloped line, perhaps punched, around the slightly raised border. Unidentified cast copper-alloy object. One side is flat and slightly curving from side to side along its length; it measures 24 x 10 mm. It is broken at both ends and is decorated with oblique grooves. From the inner edge, close to one end, is another curving length, this time c. 17 mm long and tapering from 8 mm to 4 mm in width. Decorative mount from an unidentified object, made from a thin rectangular sheet of dark copper alloy. The full length of 47.5 mm survives, but all of one long edge is missing leaving a surviving width of 29 mm. The positions of the surviving rivet holes, although irregularly placed, suggest an original width of c. 36 mm. Each surviving edge is decorated with a series of evenly spaced edge nicks which almost meet a grooved border. Within this is a more decorative border which may be of a different design on each edge. Incomplete cast copper-alloy object of unknown date and function. It is long and thin, and in excellent condition, with a very fresh break at one end and what appears to be an animal head at the other. At the broken end it is almost pentagonal in section, with four facetted faces and the fifth filled with a U-shaped groove. The apex of the pentagon has tiny transverse nicks and this forms the back of the animal's neck; the nicks may represent a mane. The grooved underside is almost flat, but the back of the neck is more steeply humped into a brow, with a conical ear or horn projec…
