Possible strap-fitting made from a strip of copper-alloy sheet folded in half, with a single rivet hole (diameter 2.4mm) at the open end. The strip tapers very slightly from 10.2mm wide at the open end, where it is c. 3mm thick, to 8.7mm at the closed end, which has a wide, rounded fold bringing the thickness to 5.7mm. It weighs 3.6g.
There is no obvious decoration, although there is a roughly circular patch of corrosion around the rivet hole on one face. It has a dark grey patina underlying a mottled dark green surface.
This cannot be a conventional buckle plate because there i…

Copper-alloy 'vulvate' or 'coffee-bean' mount, probably from a strap. Basically sub-rectangular with outcurved long sides, it is flat with a central hollow oval boss in the centre with a groove down the middle. Two integral rivets on the reverse to accommodate a strap 1-2 mm thick. Patches of a white-metal coating, now grey. This type of mount is thought to be imitating a vulva. 24 x 14 mm.

Piece of copper-alloy sheet with iron rivet, perhaps part of a strap fitting. The sheet fragment is 22 mm long and rectilinear, with one end perhaps original and one broken; it is 13 mm wide at the ?original end and 12 mm wide at the broken end. The ?original end has decoration on one face of two concentric grooves with the remains of an iron rivet at the centre; the broken end has the remains of a similar motif around an empty rivet hole. This face has a nice shiny dark green patina. The reverse is undecorated and unpolished. The fragment looks ancient, perhaps Roman to medieval…

Copper-alloy 'propeller-shaped' belt-stiffener, made up of a central circular lobe and top and bottom flaring lobes. The central lobe is decorated with a large central dot, surrounded by two wide concentric grooves and a narrow outer groove. Around this are eight rather irregularly set small ring-and-dot motifs. The top and bottom lobes have bevelled edges except for the corners. The sides have grooved borders which run right across the unbevelled corners to form small nicks at the edge. Between these grooves, the top and bottom have a double grooved border each enclosing a large…

Cast copper-alloy mount, 19.5 mm square and slightly domed with a narrow moulding between two grooves running down the centre. On the reverse is a sturdy integral rivet which sits on a rib on the reverse of the moulding and ends in an integral circular rove. One edge of the mount, and one edge of the rove, are squashed and damaged.

Copper-alloy mount or strap-slide. Circular and 20 mm in diameter, it has a hollow-backed convex rim around two wide concentric grooves. On the reverse is a low D-shaped loop which could accommodate only a very thin and narrow strap. Total thickness 6 mm. Where the patina survives it is a glossy greyish green.

Mount of the type often called "rosette-plates" or "disc-attachments", consisting of a circular plate 20 mm in diameter and a loop which would have served to hold a ring. Now very corroded, much of the edge of the circular plate has been lost, but enough remains to show that there was a border of broad U-shaped grooves radiating around the edge. Within this is a series of concentric grooves - a single wide groove flanked by pairs of narrower grooves - around a small central boss which may be the head of the small copper-alloy rivet on the reverse. The edge grooves are interrupted by…

'Propeller-shaped' mount, now bent and with a little missing. The central circular lobe is 17 mm in diameter, and has a central dot surrounded by two engraved rings. The curved edges are decorated with edge nicks. There are two flaring terminal lobes, each pierced for a rivet; one is complete and undecorated, and has bevelled edges, but the other has lost most of its edges. The central lobe and the incomplete terminal lobe are a little bent. This type of mount was used to stiffen a large belt which was probably a marker of status in the Roman army. It measures 31 mm long in its b…

'Amphora-shaped' strap-end, now incomplete. The slightly thickened terminal at the base survives, modelled in three dimensions with two transverse grooves running around it. The body of the strap-end is flat and decorated on one face with ring-and-dot motifs. Along the lower edge the ring-and-dot motifs follow the curved edge, which is presumably original. The upper edges are straighter giving a roughly lozengiform shape, and these broken edges are worn smooth and well patinated so that they look original. At the top is a horizontal groove. These strap-ends date to the very end of…

Copper-alloy mount. It is basically almost circular, 16 x 17 mm, and is plano-convex, with a flat reverse and domed upper surface. Two oval perforations with small stems breaking through the edge turn this into a mushroom- or pelta-shape, the stalk of the mushroom having an expanded base. On the reverse is an integral spike or rivet. The mount itself is 6 mm thick; the rivet increases this to 12 mm. These mounts are not common and it is possible that they are military armour or horse-harness fittings.

One plate from a strap-end, made from very thin copper alloy. It is of the 'lancet-shaped' late Roman type, with a rounded body and flared attachment end, but is very much more flimsy than most. The attachment end is decoratively cut into a curly bracket shape, and has a single central rivet hole. The body of the strap-end has four rather unevenly placed central ring-and-dot motifs, and tapered to a broken point which probably originally extended into a short terminal. On the reverse are extensive traces of solder, running up to a straight line close to the junction between the att…

Copper-alloy strap loop. It consists of a long piece of copper alloy bent in half, with the centre expanded into a loop. One end (the reverse) is narrower, only 7 mm wide, with carelessly wavy edges; it ends in a broken rivet hole. As this approaches the bend it curves outwards a little and becomes U-shaped in cross-section; then at the centre of the bend, the cross-section is D-shaped. It flares as it comes around to the front, to 10.5 mm wide, and again becomes U-shaped in cross-section. It then curves sharply down to a wide flat rectangular plate, 15 x 20 mm, which forms the ot…

Pelta-shaped mount made of copper alloy, now rather corroded and with small areas missing. The pelta is a crescent with the concave side extended into a mushroom-like stem. The stem on this mount expands at the far end, and the corners are missing. One of the ends of the crescent is missing and the other is curled around to end in a rounded terminal. Much of the edges are missing. The mount is flat and undecorated, and has two integral rivets on the reverse, one in the centre of the crescent and one on the stem. These are fairly large and have burred-over ends. The mount is rela…

Square mount, each side 19 mm long. It has a narrow ridge across the centre, dividing it into two halves each of which is a long low semi-cylinder. At each end the semi-cylinders are closed by a vertical edge. In the centre of the reverse is an integral tapering rivet, which instead of the large integral rove commonly found on this type of mount merely has a burred-over end. The total thickness from the front to the back of the rivet is 10 mm. Probably a military fitting.

Robust copper-alloy mount, rectangular and measuring 19 x 21 mm. There is a ridge down the centre dividing the mount into two; each narrow rectangular lobe is transversely convex. The reverse of each of these lobes is hollowed, and the top and bottom are closed by a flat vertical edge. In the centre of the reverse is a large integral rivet with integral circular rove (now incomplete). One of the hollow lobeson the reverse is partly filled with a hard concretion which may be iron corrosion.

Incomplete copper-alloy 'propeller-shaped' mount. It is flat and has a central circular lobe 12 mm across. Originally there were two triangular lobes, attached at their apexes, but one is now missing (unworn break). The surviving one has a lozengiform knop at one of the far corners and a break at the other; the surviving width is 19 mm. A flat-topped rib 2.5 mm wide runs down the length of the mount, and is decorated with faint transverse grooves. On the reverse, what looks like a casting seam (a flaw?) runs down the centre. The mount is slightly bent, which may have caused the br…

'Amphora-shaped' strap-end, now incomplete. The main body of the strap-end is a flat oval plate, rounded at one end and pointed at the other. The pointed end has a little knob terminal; at the rounded end the strap-end begins to widen and is perforated, but then broken (unworn breaks). These perforations were probably decorative, and crescent-shaped; there would have been smaller attachment holes above. One face of the strap-end is decorated with neatly bevelled edges and a rather untidy longitudinal line of five ring-and-dot motifs, with another ring-and-dot to either side forming …

Circular mount, now incomplete, with enamelled decoration. The mount was originally about 17 mm in diameter; it is now rather irregular, although this may be due to wear. There is a sunken dot in the centre with a sunken ring around. The sunken dot contains dark shiny enamel (possibly dark red) and the ring contains a brighter red dull enamel with two surviving inlaid white dots. On the reverse is a large integral rivet with circular rove. Just under half of the mount is missing.

Strap-slide consisting of a flat plate with a rectangular loop on the reverse. The plate is highly polished and has a nice grey-green patina. It may have been circular or oval originally, but only a very small fraction of the edge can confidently be said to be original. The current dimensions are 17.5 x 14.5 mm. The loop, although made from a chunky piece of circular-section copper-alloy rod, is rather small, measuring just 9 x 3 mm internally. There is an odd blob projecting from the outer edge of the centre of the loop which might be a casting flash. A somewhat similar object is…

Copper alloy mount from a sword belt. One end, originally with either a hook or a loop, is now missing (fairly fresh break). The break is across one end of a domed oval lobe with hollow reverse; at the other end is a transverse moulding, then a rounded pierced terminal with an iron rivet, then a small knop. Maximum width 13 mm, surviving length 28 mm.
