Copper-alloy 11th-century stirrup-strap mount of Williams's Class A, Type 14, consisting of a cross-shaped top and a flaring triangular plate. The upper arm of the cross is short and wide, and the two side arms are long and thin, the right-hand arm (as viewed from the front) being distinctly longer and thinner. There is no surviving decoration on any of the arms, but they are very worn, so decoration may have been lost and the arms may have been damaged or modified. Where they cross is a circular rivet hole 4.1mm in diameter.  The sides of the mount then flare out to for…

Copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams Class B,with engraved decoration. The main part of the mount is large and rectangular with straight sides, 35.9mm wide, with an obliquely angled flange. The flange runs the full width of the mount and has a central hole with iron rivet, which retains a rectangular patch of iron corrosion around it on both front and reverse. The upper part of the mount is rounded and shaped into three concave curves or scallops on either side and one at the apex, making seven in all, and giving a roughly pentagonal shape to the mount. There is a circular…

Copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of 11th-century date, now very worn and missing its apex. It is sub-triangular and flat, with curved long sides and two little flat projections at each of the lower corners, where there are holes through the mount from front to back filled with iron rivets. One of the projections on either corner is to the side, the other diagonal. On the reverse, between the two diagonal projections, there is a right-angled flange bringing the maximum thickness of the copper-alloy mount to 4mm; the iron rivets increase the maximum thickness overall to 8.5mm. …

Flat trilobate form of 11th-century stirrup terminal. Cast in one piece from copper alloy, it has a rectangular-section top, open at the back and U-shaped internally to take the iron stirrup. There is a ridge across each side close to the top, but the front is flat. The front flares out from 9.6mm wide at the top, downwards to the three lobes, the central one semi-circular and the two sides lobes more pointed; the maximum width at the bottom is 20.3mm. There is no decoration on the flat front. On the reverse, two ridges run down defining the channel in which the iron stirrup woul…

Copper-alloy and iron stirrup-strap mount of 11th-century date, now worn. It is basically pentagonal and largely flat, with a rounded apex below which are two small rounded projections. The apex is pierced with a circular hole. The mount then has straight edges flaring to its widest point, 28mm wide; below this are short incurves making a waist, with a small sideways projection at the bottom. Below this are straight edges slightly tapering to a base which is 25mm wide. On the reverse, the straight base turns a right angle to form a flange which is probably not full-width, but detail h…

Copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams class A, type 11C, of 11th-century date, now corroded and worn. It is triangular, with slightly outcurved sides and a rounded apex pierced with a circular hole; below the apex, in line with the hole, are a pair of tiny projections, one to either side. The whole of the rest of the mount is taken up with a sunken panel within a raised border which is the same width all around the mount. Within is relief ornament, which is blurred, but which can be seen to be a lion in profile facing left, with head raised and mouth open. The nose is …

Copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams Class A, Type 8, of 11th-century date. The very top of the apex is missing (worn break) but part of the animal head that decorated it survives, looking upwards and with two round-ended hollow-centred ears. Between and below the ears is a circular hole 4mm in diameter, and below this is a transverse ridge making a double incurve which follows the line of the ears. The centre of the mount is undecorated, but the edges and lower corners are each filled with a motif which may also be an animal head, perhaps in profile. These each have a drop-sh…

Complete copper-alloy stirrup terminal, trilobate and of 'foot-like form' (Williams 1997, fig. 5). It is large and heavy, of U-shaped cross-section and with extensive traces of solder inside. One end is open, and emphasised by a pair of circumferential ridges. The terminal then flares to the closed end, which has a pentagonal base with three rounded knobs projecting. The terminal is 27mm long, 12mm wide at the top and 17mm wide at the base without the knobs; the knobs bring the full width up to 27mm. It is 10mm from front to back at the top, 14mm from front to back at the base without …

Copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams's Class A, Type 11A dating to the 11th century. It is corroded, with all its surface lost, but complete and with clear decoration. The mount is basically triangular, with gently outcurving sides leading to a trefoil terminal with the central lobe pierced (now broken through). There are traces of engraved outward-facing scrolls on the other two lobes. There is a narrow reserved border down either side, within which is a sunken panel with a low-relief animal (almost certainly a lion). This is in profile facing right, with its left foreleg rai…

Stirrup-strap mount of Williams's Class A, Type 12 (closed version). Now very worn and a little bent, the loop at the apex is still intact but is very worn at the top. Below, the mount was originally lozengiform but has now lost its side corners; it is decorated with a worn double-strand diagonal cross with a large circular boss in the centre, and a similar double-strand border. There are very low bumps at the intersections of the cross arms and the border. The basal flange has broken away with part of the bottom of the mount, across two rivet holes. All breaks are very worn. Stirrup-…

Almost-complete stirrup terminal made from copper alloy. The top is U-shaped in cross-section and has a very short length above a bold rounded moulding. Below this the terminal flares to a maximum of 12.5 mm wide and then continues straight down to the base. This area is geometrically facetted; there is a central kite-shaped facet, with the side angles at the widest point, then an angled facet to either side between the centre and the two side facets. None of the five facets has any decoration. The reverse is open from top to bottom, but the base is then closed to form a horizontal…

Copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams's Class A, Type 10C. The mount is basically triangular, with slightly outcurving sides; it is strongly convex. The apex is extended into a pierced terminal which is blocked by iron corrosion. Below this, the body of the mount is decorated with an Urnes-style animal with its head stretching upwards to the apex. The body of the animal interlaces around six circular perforations, four in a diagonal line, one above and one below. Although the mount is very worn, there appears to have been no basal flange, and it may be that the convexity of the…

Copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams's Class A, Type 11A. It is now very worn and parts of the edge are missing together with the apex, but bold relief decoration can clearly be seen; a lion facing right and stretching upwards to bite at something just below the apex. Lower-relief detail, such as the mane or the curled tail as it crosses the flank, has now been worn away. The lion stands on an undecorated lower band which is pierced by two rivet holes, one of which is blocked by iron corrosion. On the reverse is a narrowed right-angled flange. The mount now has a rough reddish…

Copper-alloy stirrup terminal, now rather worn. A tube 29 mm long is closed at the lower end and open at the top and back; most of the tube is missing on one face. The tube would have fitted around the iron stirrup and the inside of the tube has a lot of decayed solder for attachment to the stirrup. The lower end of the tube has a large D-shaped lobe on the front with a circular perforation; on the lower outer corner is a small triple projection. This is a very stylised version of the type shown in Williams 1997 (FRG Datasheet 24) fig 3, where the intended decorative scheme is clearly…

Copper-alloy stirrup terminal, a 28 mm long tube with open reverse, one closed end and a worn relief-decorated front. The decoration forms a stylised animal head, with a chevron at the top perhaps representing ears, then a raised brow with oblique grooves on either side, then a long muzzle with a longitudinal groove down either edge of the flat top, a pair of transverse grooves across the end, and a chevron on either side. Copper-alloy stirrup terminal of narrow foot-like form, now rather worn. It is quite sharply angled, with the upper part forming a tube 22 mm long and a maximum of 12 mm wide. The reverse is open and the tube flares slightly to a closed lower end. Across the angle, on the front, is a transverse moulding, and then there is a short downward-pointing foot which tapers sharply to a point. Copper-alloy stirrup terminal, now worn and fragmentary. It consists of a curving and flaring tube which is open at the reverse and which has worn relief decoration on the concave face. In the centre of the fragment is a transverse moulding; to one side of this the cross-section is C-shaped, and to the other side it is more sharply angled to form almost a pyramidal shape. It is difficult to tell which end is which, but there are hints on the reverse that the pyramidal end was closed; if so, the moulding may represent the brow of an animal head and the pyramid may represent the muzz…

Small fragment of copper-alloy stirrup terminal, now very worn. It consists merely of a rounded boss which flares and flattens on one edge; this probably originally extended upwards as a tube with open reverse. The boss would have fitted onto the corner of the iron stirrup, but there is now no trace of the solder with which it would have been attached. No decoration survives. Late Anglo-Saxon, 11th century.

Cast copper-alloy stirrup terminal with relief decoration in the form of an animal head, of the type which Williams (FRG Datasheet 24, 1997) calls 'snub-nosed' (fig. 2). It has a C-shaped cross-section with hollow reverse to take the stirrup. At the top is a low ridge, part of which is broken away. There is a short undecorated area, then the animal head begins with a pair of long oval ears with hollow centres. Below is a bulbous brow on which two oval eyes are engraved. The terminal then becomes solid and turns at an angle to form the snout; on the reverse is a ledge for the corne…
