Small lead bag or bale seal. Two discs 15mm in diameter pressed together; part of the edge is missing and there is no obvious joint between the two discs. One seems to be blank, and the other has a relief design within a circular ridge. The design is difficult to interpret but looks a little like a merchant's mark, with an element like a closed figure 4. Perhaps mid 17th to mid 19th century.

Lead kosher seal, circular with a broken-away stem. The base of the stem can be seen as a raised tapering 'tail' on either face. 17 mm in diameter, it has relief Hebrew lettering on both faces, but both are worn and difficult to read. Kosher seals were used on kosher foodstuffs, at least from the 17th century onwards; this form of seal is probably 19th or early 20th century. The inscription will give the name of the Chief Rabbi in office at the time.

Lead kosher seal, circular with a broken-away stem leaving an indentation in one edge. 16 mm in diameter, it has relief Hebrew lettering on both faces. On one there is an aleph in the centre, and on the other the central letter is unclear. The seven letters around the outside seem identical on both faces, but the only clearly readable ones are an aleph to the left of a shin. The ordering of the letters seems similar to that on the left-hand example of pl. 20, no. 227 in BNJ 54 (1984). Kosher seals were used on kosher foodstuffs, at least from the 17th century onwards; this form of…

Russian bale seal, an oval lead disc measuring 20 x 23 mm. Two holes for ties are clearly visible running through the thickness of the seal along its short axis. The seal has been crimped together by the use of obverse and reverse dies which bear lettering. The dies are not oriented; on the obverse, the lettering runs parallel to the holes rather than perpendicular to them, and on the reverse the lettering runs at about 45 degrees to the holes. On the obverse, the lettering is in Cyrillic; a transcription by John Sullivan can be seen on the scan and the Latin equivalent is something…

Russian bale seal made from lead, an oval measuring 20 x 23 mm. Two holes for ties are clearly visible running through the thickness of the seal along its short axis. The seal has been crimped together by the use of obverse and reverse dies which bear lettering. Unusually, however, the dies are not oriented properly. On the obverse, the lettering runs parallel to the holes rather than perpendicular to them, and on the reverse the lettering runs at about 45 degrees to the holes and is partly off the seal. On the obverse, the top line has perhaps a single illegible initial. The sec…

Lead kosher seal. It has two discs connected by a rod which is circular in cross-section and which has been bent, presumably to secure the seal onto the food. One disc is 1.5 mm thick and circular, 15 mm in diameter, and has a relief Hebrew inscription on both faces consisting of a ring of seven letters around a central letter. The seven-letter ring appears identical on both faces but the central letter appears to be different. The other disc is 3 mm thick and oval, 10 mm across and 13 mm long with its far end cut straight across. Just inside the straight edge is what appears to b…

Russian bale seal, not quite complete, measuring 23 x 21.5 mm. One face is stamped with Cyrillic lettering in four lines, reading (transliterated) L.D./ IMVI / NNIKS / M 55 (the last two letters of the second line and the second 5 are unclear). The other face has Roman letters reading NP. / - F 12 H / 1809. The second line on this face is very unclear but is read with the help of the parallel in Fife Museum, CUPMS 1999.56.14 (Sullivan 2000, no. 40). There is, however, a definite initial before the F. John Sullivan has seen this seal and confirms that the Quality Control Officer iss…

Lead bale seal, originally thought to be possibly Russian. A simple lead disc, 22.5 mm in diameter and now incomplete, which reads MD / 1780 in two lines on one face, and has a coat of arms with a coronet above on the other. The charge on the shield appears to be (see sketch) quarterly, 1 and 2 a lion rampant, 3 barry of four with a lozenge on the second bar, 4 missing, with possibly some central device (a rose?) These arms do not seem English. John Sullivan has seen this seal (February 2002) and considers it not to be Russian.

Two lead kosher seals, small and each with part of a projecting rod surviving. They are both oval, 10 mm and 11.5 mm across, with the rod projecting from one of the shorter ends. The narrower one is 25 mm long (about half of this is the rod) and is stamped with four Hebrew letters in two lines on one face. The last two letters on the top line are possibly alef and tet. There is a single letter (perhaps alef) on the other. The wider one is 23 mm long (the rod part is 9 mm long) and has perhaps two letters on one face and a single letter on the other. This one also has traces of po…

Lead bale seal, perhaps from a European post office. Nearly circular, it measures 20 x 19 mm and has a hole through the centre for strings. One face is stamped with a crown; under the centre of the crown is the letter P, then to the right of this OS. There is room for the T of POST, and room for a short word of perhaps three letters before the P. Underneath the letters is a rose. On the other face are two ovals with heraldic devices. The oval on the left has a spread eagle and the oval on the right has a line towards the top with two small saltires above, and a dolphin embowed (…

Russian bale seal. Flat and circular, there are two holes within the thickness to take cords. The obverse has four lines of Cyrillic lettering, reading (transliterated) .LD / MTAR / PCHINO / N II. This will be the name of the quality control officer and perhaps the number of the location at which he worked. The reverse has the Roman initials SP / NP. / F.W / 18 - - in four lines, with the last two digits of the date unfortunately missing. SP is probably missing a B (for St Petersburg); the next two lines are the initials of the producers of the goods. In the fourth line, the thir…

Russian bale seal. One face is quite clearly stamped with two lines of Cyrillic lettering and H 32 6 on the lowest line. The reverse is very hard to read; John Sullivan of St Andrews University has transliterated it as the surname (P)alov(o)khin - there is a Polovokhin recorded on two seals in Fife.

Large lead bale seal, oval and 24 x 27 x 8 mm, with two holes within the thickness of the seal along the shorter axis (one of the holes appears to be blocked in the middle). It bears the same relief device on both sides; a rather oval crescent, open end downwards, crossed centrally by a vertical line which follows the line of the central holes. At the end of the vertical line within the crescent is a triangle projecting to the right. At the opposite end is a long rectangle also projecting to the right. A scan has been sent to John Sullivan at St Andrews University to try to get a …

Possible lead kosher seal, circular and flat with a short circular-section rod projecting from what is presumably the top. There is a single character on each face, which look something like the Latin G and X, but which may be in reality be Hebrew; the X is very like a Hebrew alef, but the G is harder to interpret.

Lead kosher seal. Originally circular, with a hole at the top within the thickness of the seal; a small area at the top has now broken off. There is an inscription in Hebrew on both sides, stating the authority of the Beth Din and giving the name of the Chief Rabbi in office at the time; but this inscription is currently waiting for a Hebrew reader to confirm this and date it precisely. The seal would have been fixed to a kosher foodstuff. Very similar to Mitchiner, BNJ 1984, pl. 20 no. 227.
