Description: Unusual partly gilded silver and niello-inlaid mount of early-medieval date, perhaps broken and repaired. It is rectangular, thick and hollowed on the reverse, and decorated in Carolingian-style relief with openwork elements. The decoration is based around a bold raised flat-topped diagonal cross or saltire dividing the square into quarters, with  a worn boss in the centre and at the end of each arm. At the end of each arm of the saltire is a low-relief leaf motif, with a sunken, lobed centre and an outcurved leaf to either side which is inlaid with a niell…

Piece of copper-alloy binding strip or mount, probably from furniture, a box or casket, or similar. It is D-shaped in cross-section, with a flat reverse and curved top. It is broken at both ends and has vaguely zoomorphic decoration. Surviving length 75mm, width of wider part 13mm, maximum thickness 5.3mm, weight 16.3g.  At one end it is broken across a circular rivet hole c. 3mm in diameter; here the break seems fairly fresh. The hole has punched dots around it and there is a trace of an oblique groove. There is then an undecorated area c. 25mm long, with a similar rivet hole ne…

Incomplete copper-alloy openwork mount of medieval date. About half of a (presumably originally circular) roundel survives, with a frame c. 3-4mm wide surrounding a central motif whose surviving part consists of three arms, the central one oval and the two flanking ones narrower and curving outwards. Beyond the frame, in line with the oval arm, is a large projection in the shape of a fleur-de-lis, with a groove across the rectangular base. The mount is flat, mostly 2mm thick, but has an integral circular-section rivet on the reverse of the lis which brings the overall thickness to 5.5m…

Complete cast copper-alloy medieval mount in the shape of a crowned facing head. The crown is very schematic, being a triangle with oblique grooves suggesting a central trefoil. Below this, the face is convex, rising to a central point between the eyes, and equally schematic; it consists of a pair of triangular grooves, bases facing each other, forming eyes (half-obscured by corrosion) and two diverging oblique grooves indicating the nose. Below the chin is a tiny stub of neck. The reverse is hollowed, and has a spiked rivet in the centre. Rivets on mounts such as these …

Openwork cross-shaped mount made from gilded copper alloy. One arm of the cross survives intact, if bent; the other arms are all broken off short (worn breaks). The surviving arm is flat, c. 14mm wide, and has a square end with a circular rivet hole 3.7mm in diameter. The rest of the arm has decorative perforations formed from double-strand interlace; this seems abstract, with no obvious naturalistic detail, just a median groove indicating which strand crosses over or under. The other three arms appear to have had similar decoration.  The centre of the cr…

Copper-alloy Roman mount. It is basically drop-shaped, with the rounded end torn and incomplete, although relatively little seems to be missing. There is an almost spherical knob at the pointed end; this knob has a small flattened area on the reverse. The rest of the mount is convex and hollow-backed, with an integral rivet ending in a neat transverse rectangular rove. It measures 23.0mm in surviving length, 13.0mm in maximum width and 10.6mm in thickness including the rivet; it weighs 2.5g. There is a good parallel at BH-D710F4, which also has the T-shaped rivet. Gilded copper-alloy relief-decorated mount of late16th- or 17th-century date. It is flat, with a trefoil or fleur-de-lis at each end and drop-shaped in between. In the centre is a raised lozenge or pointed-oval, with a scroll to either side curling to fill the rounded sides of the drop shape. Above (at the wider end of the drop shape) is a transverse band with three dimples, resembling the base of a crown. Above this is a large fleur-de-lis. Copper-alloy mount of post-medieval date. it is flat and shield-shaped, with sides curving to a broken point. The top is straight from the corners inwards, but then curves up to form a large central projection which begins to flare but which is then broken. It is corroded and so the decoration is hard to decipher, but there appear to be relief curvilinear elements and patches of gilding. On the reverse are two attachment spikes, one bent outwards and the other broken off short. Surviving length 27mm, width 15mm, weight 2.62g. Similar to BH-E6FDB6. 17th century.

Unusual medieval copper-alloy trefoil mount still in place on a fragment of copper-alloy backplate. The mount is basically lozengiform, with three lozenge-shaped leaves and a slender flaring stalk, all divided by V-shaped grooves, radiating from a centre which is pierced to hold a separate copper-alloy rivet. This rivet fixes the mount to a thin backplate whose edges may be all broken, but which now echoes the shape of the mount in that it has a square cut-out (or break) at each of the mount's corners (the outer point of each leaf). This gives it a rough cross shape, and outside …
