Description: Small silver hooked tag of early-medieval date. It has a circular plate, two incomplete flat lugs near the top pierced for sewing, and a complete sharp hook at the bottom. The plate has an undecorated border, within which is a sunken panel containing a reserved Trewhiddle-style animal in profile left, with its head turned to look over its tail. The decoration is at an unusual angle; the animal is the right way up when the object is held with the hook to the upper left and the sewing lugs to the lower right. The animal has a large head with rounded brow, drilled …

Description: Gilded silver composite hooked tag. It is made in at least four parts; a lozenge-shaped backplate, a soldered-on hook, a decorative three-dimensional front element, and a central rivet in the shape of a Tudor rose. All but the hook have neat relief decoration. The backplate is a symmetrical flat lozenge, with a raised edge which is decorated with a longitudinal median groove. It has a knop at each corner, the knop at the top now missing. In the centre of each edge is another knop, generally slightly smaller and decorated with radiating grooves, some of which appear w…

Description: Silver hooked tag with parcel gilding (some elements gilded, some not). The plate is circular, with a large gilded hemispherical boss at the centre, which forms the head of a rivet holding other elements together. The next element down is a flower of 17 radiating round-ended petals, made from ungilded silver sheet. The petals are separated from each other by grooves, and alternately plain and decorated with a pair of radiating grooves. Two undecorated petals are together at about 11 o'clock, and they have three grooves between them, perhaps an attempt to…

Description: Gilded silver hooked tag of early post-medieval date. It appears to be made in one piece, but may have been made from separate elements soldered together. It has a sub-triangular three-dimensional plate consisting of three rounded bosses. Each boss is decorated with three circles made from plain ridges or possibly plain soldered-on wire, with a granule or pellet at the centre. The bosses alternate with three similar granules set near the edge of the plate. The edge is scalloped; shaped around the bosses and granules, curved around each granule and with three…

Fragment of silver hooked tag of early-medieval date. The curved base of the flat plate survives, together with the top of the hook which is broken just as it begins to curve. The breaks are worn. The plate has engraved decoration of an encircling border, within which two complete and one incomplete motifs survive, each consisting of a triangular base and a pelta-shaped top. The triangles spring from the border groove and their other two sides are incurved. One pelta top (to the left of the hook) is larger than the other, and has a rounded cap and V-shaped base; the other is a simple …

Hooked tag made from gilded silver, consisting of a triangular plate and a separate hook and loop. Each side of the plate measures 19 mm, and the corners are rounded. The edges are cut into scallops of varying sizes. On the front are three large hemispherical bosses set within twisted wire collars, and three large pellets, each set within a larger scallop and also with a twisted wire collar. There is no central pellet. Each element is probably soldered in place as there are no rivets visible on the reverse. The separate hook and loop also appear to have been soldered in place on the r…

Gilded silver hooked tag. The plate is trefoil, with each foil a domed boss. In the centre is a separate sheet flower with six petals, apparently ungilded, which is held on by a gilded silver rivet with a prominent smooth round head. The rivet's shank passes through the plate and is then split and folded out flat on the reverse to hold the elements together. The decoration of the trefoil's bosses varies, but all three have the basic decoration of two circles of twisted wire with a pellet in the centre of each. The lower foil has a pellet between and below the circles; a length of tw…

Incomplete silver hooked tag, gilded on both front and reverse; one of a pair, with SF3983. The plate is rectangular and three-dimensional; in the centre is a large raised (apparently solid) rectangular area with a central circular boss. On the top of the boss is a tiny projection which brings the plate's thickness to 5.5 mm. Around the boss, the raised area is filled with unclear relief decoration, including eight pellets around the edge, within a cabled border. The outer flange is undecorated; around the edge are six projecting knobs, one at each corner (lower left one now missing -…

Small silver hooked tag with circular plate decorated with an engraved spiral. The outer ring of the spiral has four pairs of transverse grooves arranged to form a cross. There are two small sewing holes towards the top of the plate, which flank the uppermost pair of grooves and cut through part of the spiral. All of the grooves are made from very fine rocked tracer work. At the bottom is a small complete sharp bent-under hook, with four transverse grooves at the top; these grooves are simply engraved. The plate is 12 mm in diameter and the total length is 17.5 mm. This is an unusual …
