Copper-alloy hooked tag, now bent and cracked, and with the hook largely missing. The plate is openwork, with a central solid roundel bordered by a ridge. This is surrounded by oval and circular indentations, some pierced through to the back and all probably intended as holes. The upper part of the plate has five projecting trefoils, the spaces between them forming the circular holes; bars extend from two trefoils and turn a right angle to form a rectangular attachment loop. The lower part of the plate has a pair of longer relief elements curling around the oval holes. Between these i…

Tiny copper-alloy hooked tag of early-medieval date, Read's Class A, Type 2. The thin plate was probably originally circular, as part of a compass-drawn border circle can be seen at the junction of hook and plate, but now quite a bit of the edge has worn or been broken away to make it oval or sub-triangular. It has a central circular hole (c. 1.1mm in diameter) outlined with a similar groove, and a very faint second circle outside this. There are two similarly sized circular sewing holes above, one of which has broken through to the edge; they are separated by a ring-and-dot motif. Th…

Copper-alloy hooked tag of early post-medieval date. The plate is circular, 14.2mm in diameter and slightly convex. It has relief decoration of a rose, made up of a central boss in the shape of a flower, and two concentric rings of small relief C-shapes representing five double petals in each ring; all is within a finely beaded border. The loop above is trapezoidal; the hook below is now straightened and has lost its tip (worn break). Both loop and hook are trapezoidal in cross-section. Total length 33.7mm, width of loop 13.1mm, thickness of plate 3.1mm, weight 2.5g. Similar to, …

Copper-alloy hooked tag of Read's class E, type 3. It is made in one piece, with a trapezoidal attachment loop, a circular plate and a long hook. The loop and hook are both trapezoidal in cross-section; the hook is complete, but bent to one side, and has a rectangular moulding at the top which brings the maximum thickness up to 2.5mm.. The plate measures 17mm in width and has relief decoration on the front consisting of a central bearded human face with hair in a heavy fringe and side locks, looking straight at the viewer. The head appears to be backed by a concave circle, so the whol…

Late medieval or early post-medieval hooked tag of Read's Class C, Type 3. Now rather corroded, it has a hollow body 22mm long and 13mm wide with a curved front and flat back, so a semi-circular cross-section. It is open at the top, and the back has a rectangular hole in it measuring 10mm long and tapering from 9mm wide at the top to 8mm wide at the bottom. The front is decorated with a rectangular panel of criss-cross lines inlaid with niello, with a possible tranverse ridge above and a definite one below. The body tapers in thickness from 7.5mm at the top to 5.5mm at the base. Th…

Complete copper-alloy hooked tag of post-medieval date. The plate is shield-shaped, with a straight top and sides curving to a point. Above is a rectangular loop which at 8.5mm wide is considerably narrower than the rest of the plate. The decoration is in relief, occasionally broken through to the reverse; there is a pelleted border around a double ridge, then inside the shield are three fleurs-de-lis. The plate is 20mm long and 15.5mm wide. A transverse ridge divides the D-section sharp hook from the plate. The hook is complete and curves backwards, bringing the total length to 33…

Copper-alloy hooked tag of late early-medieval date, Read's class A type 1. The plate is trapezoidal, 18.5mm wide at most and 11.5mm at the base; the plate is 14mm long. It has two circular holes of about 1mm diameter through the upper half of the plate, not particularly near to the corners; there are traces of dots forming a square, possibly the remains of setting-out dots or lines, around the holes. The plate is decorated with a border of double punchmarks right across the top; then there is a similar line down each side, beneath the top line. The punchmarks then form an inverted V …

Copper-alloy hooked tag. The plate is made up of a pair of relief scrolls with their inner ends joined in a long point and their outer ends terminating in large flat pellets which fill the centre. Above these are a pair of short oblique projections and a rectangular loop. Below is a transverse rectangle decorated with two longitudinal grooves, and then two more oblique projections. The oblique projections together give the effect of a saltire. There are three pellets at the top of the long hook, which tapers and is then broken. An unusual design. Surviving length 30 mm, width 15 mm.

Gilded copper-alloy hooked tag. The plate is long and triangular, and at the wider top is cut into three lobes. The two wider outer lobes are pierced for sewing; there are grooves between these and the narrower inner lobe which curve around the outer lobes before running down just inside the tapering straight edges to meet close to the bottom. The area thus enclosed is divided into two by a transverse groove. Above is an engraved square panel, with a line running inwards from the centre of each side nearly to the centre to form a quatrefoil. Below is a grooved triangle. At the ver…

Small and mis-cast openwork copper-alloy hooked tag. The basic type has the plate formed from a C-shaped scroll with solid circular ends. There is a rectangular loop at the top which springs from the ends of the scroll, and at the bottom there is firstly a horizontal bar on which the scroll rests and then a hook with two small lateral projections at the top. The hook is triangular in cross-section, and is sharp and complete. On this example, however, mis-casting has produced a partial blocking not only of the scroll but also of the rectangular loop. The space left within the loop i…

Large copper-alloy hooked tag. The plate is circular, 19 mm in diameter, and has openwork and relief decoration. Around the edge is a pellet border, with a double ridge within this. The inner of the two ridges is interrupted by six circular holes; the uppermost hole, however, is blocked by an imperfect casting. Occupying the centre is a six-petalled relief rose, with a raised central boss and concave petals each decorated with two radiating grooves. From the bottom of the plate emerges the hook. This has three transverse ridges across the top, and from the upper one a relief plan…

Triangular hooked tag made from copper alloy. 16.5 mm wide at the top and 22.5 mm long, the sharp apex is turned under to form a small hook. There are two circular sewing holes set well in from the top corners. The tag is decorated with a vertical line of rectangular punchmarks, which runs right from the top between the holes down to the apex. This is crossed by a similar line across the top above the holes. Each side has two widely spaced similar lines which run up to the central vertical line. The punchmarks are all so neatly placed that it seems likely that they were made by ro…

Hooked tag made from a very grey copper alloy. The plate is flat and circular, 14 mm in diameter, and is decorated with a low-relief double six-petalled rosette. Each of the petals in the outer ring has two oval depressions. Above the plate is a rectangular loop. On the reverse is a raised rectangular area which may be the start of a broken-off hook. It is covered with iron corrosion, so alternatively the raised area may just possibly be the remains of solder used to attach a separate iron hook. Total surviving length, 20 mm.

Hooked tag made from copper alloy. The plate is rectangular, and has tiny stubs at the top from a missing attachment loop. There is a border of large pellets; down either long side are four pellets, there are none at the top because of the attachment loop, and there is a single pellet in the centre of the bottom of the plate above the hook. Within the border of pellets is a relief rectangle with a single pellet in the centre. The hook has some moulded transverse decoration at the top (perhaps a broad groove above a ridge). The hook curves down and behind, and is complete but now s…

Hooked tag made from copper alloy. The plate is pentagonal, with a rectangular slot at the top and the rest decorated with a pattern of diagonal rows of pellets with recesses in between. Two (at least) of the recesses have broken through to the other side to form holes, and the design may originally have been intended to be openwork. At the bottom is a large sharp hook with trapezoidal cross-section. The colour is a pale grey, looking like lead, but this is simply the lowest coat of hard chalky soil encrustations; when scraped away there is a dark green patina underneath.

Small silver hooked tag with circular plate and missing hook. The plate is 12 mm in diameter, undecorated, and has two sewing holes. A small stub of the hook survives. Such a small simple hooked tag may date from any time from the seventh to the eleventh centuries. (Subsequent note: this is almost certainly the same item as that published without illustration in the Treasure Act Annual Report 2001, no. 58, p. 41 (Treasure number M&ME 413). It was found upon XRF analysis to be a copper, lead and tin alloy and therefore not to be Treasure).

Copper-alloy hooked tag with sub-circular plate, two broken loops and a large hook. The plate is decorated with two engraved circles with fine radiating grooves both between the circles and within the inner circle. The engraving is not done particularly neatly. At the top of the plate are two projecting pierced lugs, both now broken; the breaks seem quite fresh but the metal is extremely thin here and it is hard to be certain. At the bottom is a much thicker hook, which tapers downwards before bending under to form the hook. Anglo-Saxon, probably middle or late.

Small flimsy hooked tag made of copper alloy. The plate is circular and has two slightly asymmetrically set circular attachment holes near to the top edge. The plate is 10 mm wide and the only decoration is a white-metal coating on the front surface. At the bottom is a long hook; as this turns backwards only at right angles, it is probably either bent or incomplete. Total length 18 mm.
