Copper-alloy shield-shaped harness mount, probably originally enamelled. It has a straight top and sides curving to a point, and has heraldic decoration within a narrow raised border which probably served to keep the enamel in place. The heraldry is simple and consists of a cross engrailed. On the reverse, in the centre, is a stub of broken-off worn-down or ground-down integral rivet. Next to this is a secondary circular hole 3.2mm in diameter, showing repair or modification for re-use. The mount is 42.1mm long, 35.3mm wide and 2.5mm thick away from the stub of rivet. It weighs …

Shield-shaped copper-alloy medieval harness mount. The shield has a straight top and sides curving to a point; it is now slightly bent but measures 16mm across the top and 17.5mm in length. Surface treatment of metal and enamel missing. Blazon: Two trumpets pilewise between three crosses paty. Probably an abbreviated version of the arms of TRUMPINGTON, Azure crusily and two trumpets pilewise Or, either for Roger, a knight of John de Vescy, 1280, d.1289, or his s. and h. Medieval gilded copper-alloy suspension mount for a horse-harness pendant, cast in one piece. It is essentially T-shaped, the horizontal part being rectangular, short and wide with a triangular cross-section; there are two sturdy integral circular-section rivets on the flat reverse and tiny traces of gilding on the front. Projecting from the centre of one long edge is a triangular-section bar which quickly divides into two round-ended D-section lugs, both pierced from side to side to take a (now missing) hinge bar. 20mm long, 20mm wide, 5mm thick at the lugs, 7mm thick at the rivets. …

Copper-alloy suspension mount for a medieval horse-harness pendant, now very worn. It consists of a rectangular plate, 34mm long and 15mm wide, with a circular hole at each corner. One of the two lower holes (on the viewer's left) is blocked with iron corrosion. The other holes are 3-4mm in diameter. In the centre of one long edge are two projecting stubs which are the remains of a hinge. No decoration survives. It weighs 8.0g. No precise parallel has been found. SWYOR-348117 and IOW-AE3ECE are fairly close, but smaller and with only two rivet holes.

Early Anglo-Saxon circular mount, probably from horse-harness. It is decorated with a single band of relief animal ornament around a central boss. Around the edge is a wide border, probably with stamped ornament, and a lower beaded rim. The reverse has no obvious means of attachment. Compare BUC-24D605, BERK-18B795 and BH-5D35E5; also a repoussé silver mount from Caenby, Lincs (Speake 1980, pl. 15k). Early 7th century.

Early Anglo-Saxon circular mount, probably from horse-harness. The mount is decorated with a single band of triple-strand interlace with no heads or other zoomorphic elements. There is an outer ridged border, probably consisting of three ridges, and an inner single ridge dividing the interlace from a domed boss in the centre. The reverse appears corroded (perhaps with iron adhering) and there is no visible means of attachment. The interlace suggests a very late 6th- or early 7th-century date; compare an example from Sutton Hoo Mound 17 (Carver 2005, fig. 112, no. 25ci).

Early Anglo-Saxon rectangular mount with terminals, probably from horse-harness. The mount is decorated with Style I relief animal ornament in a central rectangular panel and on pairs of semi-circular panels on the terminals, and these areas appear to be gilded. In side view the mount is curved or bent, perhaps for attachment to a noseband. There are no obvious rivets or other means of fixing. Compare SOMDOR-305381.

Openwork mount, perhaps from horse harness. In shape it is a little like an urn, with a projecting stem, then a rounded base decorated with incised lines radiating from the junction of base and stem. The upper part has two large circular perforations, 5 mm in diameter, with a transverse groove above and below. Above, the mount is damaged and possibly distorted, but there appears to be a long narrow transverse oval perforation in the centre, and then a straight or slightly incurved top edge which projections slightly to either side. On the reverse are two integral rivets, one large…

Gilded copper-alloy mount, possibly from horse harness. It appears to be incomplete, although the breaks are old and it is difficult to reconstruct its original appearance. At one end of the fragment is a sub-rectangular lobe (8 x 6 mm), decorated with an incised double-strand saltire, with a large tapering integral rivet on the reverse. From this a bar extends at an angle; there is a small stub extending from this which may be the remains of an openwork design. There is what appears to be the stub of a matching bar extending from the sub-rectangular lobe, which would make the desig…

Copper-alloy shield-shaped harness mount, now slightly bent and quite worn. The shield is 30 mm long and 24 mm wide with a straight top and sides curving to a point. Three relief lions passant guardant can just be seen on the shield (the arms of England before 1340). Although these were probably reserved and gilded against a red enamel background, none of the gilding or enamel survives. On the reverse is a large tapering integral blunt-ended spike, set at a slight upwards angle; this increases the total thickness to 22 mm. These mounts are very similar to horse-harness pendants and we…

Large copper-alloy mount, probably from horse-harness. 41 mm long and 11 mm wide, it has no decoration but is cut into a decorative symmetrical shape. There is a central oval lobe and two terminal lobes with rounded ends and incurved sides. On the reverse of each of these is a rectangular-section bent-over attachment spike, which would have passed through leather 5-6 mm thick. The shape of the mount seems rather classical in inspiration; it is 16th century or later, perhaps as late as 18th century.

Copper-alloy harness mount, 23 mm square. The front is very slightly facetted to give a pyramidal effect. On the reverse there is a large integral spike of sub-square section, now slightly bent but still c. 19 mm long. From the spike radiate four broad and roughly made grooves, each running to a corner and so mirroring the higher areas of the pyramidal front. The front appears to have a black coating (possibly as a result of applying hot linseed oil to the metal) which has worn off on the higher parts, giving the appearance of a saltire of bare metal on a black background. Hexagonal openwork copper-alloy harness mount, with six comma-shaped perforations which radiate with their points towards the centre. The edge has six trefoil projections, one between each of the comma shapes, and smaller single projections in the centre of each comma shape. Copper-alloy harness mount with heraldic decoration. Quatrefoil in shape with small right-angled projections between each lobe, it is now corroded and no enamel survives. The relief areas of copper-alloy consist of three crowns, one in each of the side lobes and the lower lobe, with an arrow in the middle pointing downwards. The feathers of the arrow can be seen in the upper lobe and the point is within the lowest crown. Off-centre on the reverse is a sturdy integral rivet. Large quatrefoil copper-alloy mount, with small right-angled point in each angle. On the reverse is a substantial integral tapering spike. The front has enamelled and gilded decoration; in the centre is a relatively small shield with the charge Azure, a lion rampant. The lion would have had to be either silvered or gilded (according to heraldic convention) but there is no trace of either, the metal here being corroded. Crudely made copper-alloy suspension mount for a horse-harness pendant. It is basically a flat rectangular plate, surviving dimensions 18 mm wide by 14 mm deep, with one end crushed. Occupying most of the other end is a very large perforation. Extending from the centre of one long edge is a projection which has had a slot cut in the centre and then been folded in half around a copper-alloy hinge bar. The slot would originally have accommodated the loop of the pendant. It is a little odd that there is only one perforation in the plate (presumably for a rivet) and that this is off-c…
