Copper-alloy quillon from a knife or dagger guard, probably of medieval date. The object is cast in one piece, and is broken across the end of the hole through which the iron tang would have passed (fairly fresh break). Beyond this it turns a right angle downwards, and then there is a C-shaped curve, points upwards. The rearmost point, where it springs from the rest of the object, is a flat oval platform. The curve then acts as a neck, because the other end is shaped into an animal or possibly human head, with dots on the sides for ears, dots on the front for eyes, and a V-section…

Post-medieval dagger guard made from copper alloy, consisting of a central block with a quillon to either side. The block is flat, 6.5mm thick, with a rectangular hole measuring 9 x 6mm through its centre to accommodate the tang of the dagger. Viewed from the top or bottom the block is hexagonal, and viewed from the side each face has a central vertical ridge with another at either end where the block meets the quillons. Copper-alloy pommel from a medieval sword or dagger. Viewed from the top it is slightly domed and almost circular, with seven slight facets around the edge forming a heptagon with rounded corners. The maximum 'diameter' is 29 mm. Each of the rounded corners is cut off by a broad V-shaped groove, and from either end of each one a similar groove runs at an angle to the centre. Circular copper-alloy pommel, 30 mm in diameter and 12 mm thick. These small dimensions indicate that it is probably from a dagger rather than a sword. The top is slightly convex, and originally had a central sub-rectangular hole measuring c.10 x 11 mm. Some of the edges of this slot have now broken away leaving an irregular hole. Around the hole are eight radiating grooves each with a decorative zig-zag line down the base of the groove; the zig-zag appears to have been added after the groove was cast or engraved, and does not result from rocking the engraving tool from side to sid…
