Cast copper-alloy handle lug of the type used mainly on chafing dishes. The lug is 9 mm thick and is gently rounded on both faces. An off-centre circular perforation runs between the two faces. The lug is basically oval, but flares slightly at the rear end before ending in a very short integral circular rivet. These lugs held drop handles similar to sf1099/8389.

Heart-shaped drop handle from a chafing dish, similar to that illustrated by Lewis as his Type B1. Made from cast copper alloy, it is rectangular in cross-section and has a flat top and two slightly unsymmetrical lobes. Around the flat top is wrapped a length of copper-alloy strip formed into a figure-of-eight with a short straight section between the two loops. The lower loop holds the handle and the upper loop presumably served to attach it to the vessel. Length without looped strip, 48 mm; total length, 60 mm. Chafing dishes held burning coals and kept serving dishes hot; these dro…

Handle lug from a chafing dish, of the type used on Lewis's Type B and Type D dishes and on sheet-metal bowls such as that from Wales illustrated in Egan 1998, p. 175. It has a short chunky rivet to fix it to the dish, then a collar at top and bottom, but not on the sides, which are flat. Beyond the collar, it swells out to a rounded shape and has a circular perforation running from side to side. There are visible filemarks in various places. Lewis dates Type B dishes to the late 15th and early 16th century, and Type D dishes to the 16th century; the sheet-metal bowl from Wales is dat…
