Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Small lead ring, 13 mm in diameter, with bar 5 mm long projecting from one side. Both the ring and the projecting bar are D-shaped in cross-section. On the flat face, the ring has an incomplete circular stamp with small letters within a circular border. The other face is convex and apparently unstamped. Probably part of an unused lead cloth seal (Disc 2), although the ring is rather narrow (generally c. 3 mm wide), and it is odd that the process of stamping did not also flatten the ring.

Lead bale seal, perhaps from a European post office. Nearly circular, it measures 20 x 19 mm and has a hole through the centre for strings. One face is stamped with a crown; under the centre of the crown is the letter P, then to the right of this OS. There is room for the T of POST, and room for a short word of perhaps three letters before the P. Underneath the letters is a rose. On the other face are two ovals with heraldic devices. The oval on the left has a spread eagle and the oval on the right has a line towards the top with two small saltires above, and a dolphin embowed (…

Conical lead weight, a bit battered-looking. The base is oval, 14 x 16 mm, and the weight is 34 mm tall. There is a perforation running from top to bottom, which is oval at the bottom (5 x 7.5 mm) and a squashed circle 3 mm in diameter at the top. It weighs 31g exactly (1.09 oz).

Roughly conical lead weight, one side vertical and the other sides sloping. The base is circular, 17 mm in diameter, and the weight is 32.5 mm tall. There is a perforation running into the weight from both top to bottom, but they may not meet. At the bottom the perforation is an irregular shape, 7 mm across, and at the top it is very small, perhaps 1 mm across. It looks as though it may have been made by rolling up a thick piece of sheet, with the seam up the flat side. It weighs 32.15g (1.13 oz).

Tall lead weight, rounded and unevenly tapering in cross-section. The base is oval, 21 x 17 mm, and the weight is 35 mm tall. It tapers just above the base and then close to the top. There is a perforation running from top to bottom which mirrors the oval tapering form of the exterior. It weighs 51.04g (1.8 oz).

Small lead weight, a curious bi-pyramidal shape. Lozengiform in cross-section, there is a thickened ridge around the middle bringing the maximum cross-section dimension to 16 x 14 mm. A distinct seam runs up each of the more acute angles. A perforation runs between the apexes, which although damaged was probably originally c. 3 mm in diameter. The distance between the apexes is 18 mm. It weighs 12.68g (0.45 oz).

Circular perforated lead weight or spindle whorl. Vaguely conical, the object is extremely irregular, measuring 19 x 17 mm at the base and standing 12 mm tall. The off-centre perforation is 6 mm in diameter for all of its length. There are two large depressions in the side of the object, one of which has penetrated through to the perforation. There are also three or four dots around the top of the perforation which look almost decorative. The depressions are probably not there to adjust the weight, as it totals 18.07g (0.63 oz).

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk

Circular lead seal matrix. On the reverse is a central pierced lug. The edge has a raised border on both faces. This may have been produced at the end of the matrix's life; it appears to have largely obscured the inscription. The central motif is a deeply carved cross with wide triangular arms, with a small dot in each angle. A fine line divides this from the lightly engraved inscription. Nothing at all of the inscription is decipherable, but it seems likely that the seal matrix was a personal seal of the 13th century. The damage appears to have been done in antiquity. Edward M…

Pointed lead rod which may be a lead pencil. It is oval in cross-section at the top, 5 x 7 mm, with a small indentation in the top. The oval cross-section may be the result of squashing, as it becomes much more nearly circular towards the bottom (6 mm diameter). One side is cut away to form an off-centre point, a little like a pen nib. Total length is 36.5 mm. Lead pencils are not generally supposed to have been used for long after the invention of graphite pencils in the late 16th century, but they are fairly common detector finds and often look very modern. This one looks earli…

Lead papal bulla (seal) of Pope John XXI (reigned 1276-7). The obverse reads IO / HANNES / PP. XXI within a beaded border; the reverse is rather corroded, but has the faces of St Paul (with beard made up of vertical lines) and St Peter (with beard made up of pellets), both within beaded borders, with lettering which would have read SPA SPE above, all within a beaded border. There is a line down the centre of the obverse, and a fainter line down the centre of the reverse, marking the hole down the centre through which the cords of the document would have passed. Bullae were used on all…

Lead plaque, 12.5 mm square and 3 mm thick, decorated on one face with an animal in profile towards the left. The head is turned to face the observer and there is a double-forked tail curling up over the back. This might be a lion passant guardant, or something similar to the cat-like animals sometimes found on buckle plates (e.g. Norwich Households no. 135). It weighs 5.16g, which is equivalent to 79.8 grains.

Russian bale seal. Flat and circular, there are two holes within the thickness to take cords. The obverse has four lines of Cyrillic lettering, reading (transliterated) .LD / MTAR / PCHINO / N II. This will be the name of the quality control officer and perhaps the number of the location at which he worked. The reverse has the Roman initials SP / NP. / F.W / 18 - - in four lines, with the last two digits of the date unfortunately missing. SP is probably missing a B (for St Petersburg); the next two lines are the initials of the producers of the goods. In the fourth line, the thir…
