Incomplete lead cloth seal. Part of both discs survive, together with the connecting strip. Disc 1 is stamped with a crown over a double rose; the stamp on Disc 2 is now illegible, but may once have been a series of initials. The fragment measures 16mm from top to bottom and 17.5mm from side to side, is 2mm thick and weighs 3.21g. It is probably a 17th-century alnage seal.

Complete four-disc lead cloth seal. Disc 1, with the rivet on the reverse, is stamped with the number 59 in relief. Disc 2 has relief letters stamped on it, some of which are illegible. The visible letters read SVF / -OLK / - E * Disc 3 is stamped with the royal arms of the house of Stuart with CR above, all within a beaded circle, probably for Charles I but possibly for Charles II. Disc 4 is just a flat ring, and has no surviving stamp. Discs 1 and 3 are both 17.5mm in diameter, and the cloth seal weighs 9.39g. The royal initials date it to 1625-1649 or 1660-1685. Other four-pa…

Complete post-medieval lead cloth seal. The discs are 22mm in diameter and the connecting strip is 3mm wide; it weighs 9.70g. Disc 2 is stamped with what may be a merchant's mark. It resembles an orb with a cross on top, but the 'orb' appears to be drop-shaped and has a central horizontal line with perhaps the letter R above and some indistinct markings below. This is set within a beaded circle, with perhaps part of an inscription around at the lower left-hand side. No stamp survives on Disc 1. It probably dates to the 16th or 17th century.

Early 17th-century lead cloth seal. Disc 1 survives, apparently complete at 15mm diameter, with the flattened remains of the rivet on the reverse. The stamp on the front appears to have been much larger than the seal, so only the central part of the design survives. This shows a building with ashlar blocks outlined and a round arch or gateway; there is a plinth or steps across the base of building and arch. There also appears to be something within the arch, with a pair of oblique lines diverging and running across the steps, then a vertical line from where they join upwards. The top …

Circular lead seal matrix of medieval date. It is flat and 25mm in diameter, with the stubs of a broken-off pierced lug on the reverse; the remains of the side-to-side hole can be seen. The central motif is an eight-petalled flower with a pellet in the centre. The surrounding inscription is set within beaded borders, and reads + S'. RIC[AR]DI MORIS: (Seal of Richard Morris). A small area of the inscription is missing due to damage and corrosion. It is 3mm thick without the lug, and weighs 12.08g. 13th century.

Small lead bag or bale seal. Two discs 15mm in diameter pressed together; part of the edge is missing and there is no obvious joint between the two discs. One seems to be blank, and the other has a relief design within a circular ridge. The design is difficult to interpret but looks a little like a merchant's mark, with an element like a closed figure 4. Perhaps mid 17th to mid 19th century.

Small plano-convex lead spindle whorl. It has a flat base and sides of uneven height, with a ridge running round the base in side view taking the maximum diameter up to 17.5mm. The sides slope in a slight curve to a slanting top; maximum thickness 7mm. The central circular hole flares from 6mm in diameter at the top to 8mm in diameter at the base. It weighs 10.6g. Lead spindle whorls are difficult to date. They appear to have been in use from the 10th to the at least the 14th century.

Pointed-oval lead seal matrix, seen at Ipswich metal-detecting club. A scan of the matrix was subsequently made available. The seal matrix has a curvilinear central motif which is hard to identify. The inscription has no initial mark, and appears to read S'AMICIE SAILE, although the last part of the surname is uncertain; the IL could alternatively be an N and the E could be a C. The inscription can be translated as Seal of Amice Saile; Amice is a woman's name. 13th century.

Asymmetric lead die. None of the faces is quite square, and each has a number of dots from one to six, marked by the use of small dots close to the edges of the faces. The dots are arranged on the faces as on modern dice, except that the 2 face has the dots parallel to one edge instead of being set diagonally. The faces are as follows (dimensions are maximums): 6, 7.3 x 6.5 mm; 5, 7.5 x 6.4 mm; 4, 6.5 x 6.5 mm; 3, 6.5 x 6.2 mm; 2, 6 x 5.5 mm; 1, 6 x 6 mm. Lead spindle whorl, 28-29 mm in diameter and 12.5 mm tall, with a central circular perforation which tapers from 12 mm in diameter at the base to 10 mm in diameter at the top. The flattish base originally had a wide groove hollowed out around the perforation, but part of this has been scraped away recently, probably by agricultural machinery. The sides are fairly straight and the top is rounded, with two older scrapes across it.

Lead 'spindle whorl', plano-convex in shape. The maximum diameter is 35 mm close to the base, which has a hollowed-out centre with a perforation in the centre. The perforation is circular and tapers from 13 mm in diameter at the base to 9 mm diameter at the top. The upper part of the object is domed and undecorated, and it is 19 mm tall. Although these objects are known as spindle whorls, this one seems far too large and heavy for this; it may be a general-purpose weight. Undatable.

Object type: WEIGHT
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Tall lead weight, now a little damaged. The base is rectangular, measuring perhaps 12 x 17 mm, and has a damaged downwards projection forming a foot at each corner. In between, the base is slightly hollowed and has a dot at the centre. There are two large flat rectangular sides and two narrower triangular sides, rising to a ridge at the top; there is no suspension loop. It weighs 34.30g (1.21 oz), which is obviously not a round figure in the medieval and post-medieval avoirdupois system, so its date and function should remain tentative.

Octagonally facetted conical lead weight, 13.5 mm in diameter at the base and 19 mm tall. Very carefully made, with a small hole running up from a depression in the base to emerge at the top. It weighs 14.36g (0.50 oz), and must have lost some weight through oxidation, so that if it was made as a half-ounce avoirdupois trade weight it would originally have been slightly over-weight (to the disadvantage of the trader). Probably medieval.

Unidentified object. Made from lead, it is roughly circular but all its edges may be broken. It is slightly dished, and on the convex face is a raised circle 13 mm in diameter in which is a relief mark, perhaps a W with a horizontal line through it, or perhaps a pair of Xs. On the concave face, opposite the mark, is a sunken square measuring 3 x 5 mm. It has been suggested that this might be the base of a pewter vessel, and Roman, but no parallel has been found.

Conical lead weight. The diameter at the base is 28 mm, and there is a hole in the centre which runs 23 mm up into the interior of the weight. The total height of the weight is 46 mm. At the top it flattens as if it may have originally been pierced to provide a suspension loop; there is some dark orange-stained soil in a crevice on the very top which may possibly be from iron corrosion. It weighs 130.4g (4.6 oz) and is very hard to date.

Circular lead seal matrix, 31 mm in diameter. At the top is a suspension loop turned at right angles to the plane of the matrix, and looking very much like the loop of a horse-harness pendant. The central motif is a horse-shoe, formed from a U-shaped groove with four deeper blobs on each half. The blobs may all represent nails, or may represent three nails and a calkin on each half. The inscription is well engraved, evenly spaced and easy to read: + SIGILL GERARDI HORSSO. Richard Coates of the University of Sussex has commented that this is probably a surname alluding to a trade, r…
