Unidentified lead object, cast in one piece, now incomplete. It has a flat base, probably originally roughly circular, but much of this is now missing; what remains is variable in thickness, at most 3mm thick. The reverse is flat and featureless, but the upper surface has the remains of four ribs arranged in a cross shape. These are D-shaped in cross-section, and two survive well, one badly and one not at all. There is a rounded boss in the centre of the cross, c. 4mm in diameter, which brings the maximum thickness of the object to 7.5mm. At the end of the three surviving cross arms a…

Unidentified object. Made from lead, it is roughly circular but all its edges may be broken. It is slightly dished, and on the convex face is a raised circle 13 mm in diameter in which is a relief mark, perhaps a W with a horizontal line through it, or perhaps a pair of Xs. On the concave face, opposite the mark, is a sunken square measuring 3 x 5 mm. It has been suggested that this might be the base of a pewter vessel, and Roman, but no parallel has been found.

An unidentified object made from lead. The base is rectangular (20 x 13 mm) with a rectangular projection at each corner bringing the maximum dimensions up to 23 x 17 mm; it is 10-11 mm thick. The rectangular projections continue up the base on the long edges but not on the short edges, giving a tapering effect. The underside of the base has a series of scratched lines forming a rough ziz-zag of perhaps five points, with a line beneath them; the lines are patinated and look as if they might be original. On the top of the base are two tall cones which bend slightly towards each ot…

Cast lead ornament in the shape of an arrow, with flat reverse and angled or midribbed front giving a low triangular cross-section. The object appears to be complete. Similar lead objects in the shape of stars are thought to have been set into the plaster of medieval ceilings as architectural ornaments; see Egan 1998, no. 90.

Three-dimensional moulded bust made from lead, with a cylindrical iron rod 3 mm in diameter running vertically through it. Although the head is very worn, it appears to have an elaborate hairstyle with long hair rolled up from the ends to make a long 'sausage', and also some kind of pony-tail running from the crown over the roll of hair at the back. Beneath is a small square-cut area of chest, then a narrowed waist above an incomplete hollowed conical base. The base has a line running around it and the rod ends within it. Above the head are some incomplete mouldings around the iron…

Piece of lead which has been melted onto a numismatic item, perhaps a coin or a token or a commemorative medal. The lead has covered between a quarter and a half survives, cast from a c. 25 mm diameter disc. The central motif may be two initials, of which the left-hand one (right-hand on the original item) looks like an I. The initials are contained within a circle of tiny radiating oval depressions (pellets on the original). The partial inscription around appears to read 'I. ETALG'. The style of the lettering appears late 17th or 18th century. There is a slight rim around the ed…

Unidentified object made from lead. It is lozenge-shaped, 24 x 20 mm, and 14 mm thick. There seem to be slight ribs running down the thickness of each corner. One of the lozenge-shaped faces is flat, but the other is sunken with a pyramid-shaped depression. A 4 mm square perforation runs between the two. Date and function unknown.

Unidentified object made from lead. A low pyramid, lozenge-shaped at the base with a slightly hollowed reverse, it measures 28 x 21.5 mm corner to corner and 10 mm thick from the base to the top of a central boss. The ridges running from the boss to the more pointed corners have been flattened off; the ridges running to the less acute corners have been decorated with two to four narrow relief bands. Two sides have narrow flattened flanges around the edges. Function and date unknown.

Lead disc, an irregular circle 50-60 mm across and on average about 5 mm thick, found folded in half and now unfolded to reveal decoration on the inner face. The decoration is in low relief and, although hard to read, appears to consist of the royal arms (pre-1603) on a shield with a flat top. Around the edge is a border of rosettes and stars and perhaps saltires, contained within two wire lines. To the top and sides of the shield are single saltires which join the shield to the inner wire line. This design does not appear to be copied from any coin. At the bottom is a possible pr…

Lead star of six points. Each point is triangular in section and slightly curved; some are shorter than others. The reverse is very smooth but not completely flat. Maximum dimension, 22 mm. 3 mm thick. Weight 3.56g. The function of these stars is uncertain. Larger ones are thought to have been set in plaster as ceiling or wall decorations; these are occasionally found gilded. This one seems a little small for such a use.

Nearly circular piece of lead, irregularly plano-convex, which may be a so-called 'palm guard'. The curved face fits neatly in the palm, and the flatter face has a small area of cut and stab marks. I can find no literature on 'palm guards' but I assume that they are post-medieval.

Lead-alloy disc, now a misshapen oval, perhaps with cut edges. The thickness tapers from one shorter edge to the other, and there are some holes in the edge which suggest that the disc may have been made by squashing together two or more thinner pieces. The disc is decorated on one face with a probable shield, on which is a cross with short equal round-ended arms. There also seem to be some small pellets on the shield. Around the edge are the remains of a ?beaded circular border. The other face has an ?oval pelleted border which appears to enclose some large crude unreadable lettering…

Lead object consisting of an oval ring, 27 x 18 mm, with an 8 mm wide projection coming off the centre of one long side. The projection is 26 mm long, and ends in a chisel-like point with one face corroded and patinated and the other apparently fresh. The entire object has a flat unfinished reverse, and a more rounded shape on the front. It looks a little like a model for a key or similar. Overall length 40 mm.
