Lead spindle whorl, 31-32mm in diameter and 11-12mm tall. It has a flat underside, with a slight concentric groove, and a smoothly domed top which is decorated with five evenly spaced curving radial ribs or ridges, each c. 2-3mm wide. The central perforation is almost cylindrical, flaring a little from c. 9.5mm at the top to c. 10mm wide at the bottom. It weighs 57.2g.  Excavated parallels with good dates are few, but seem to centre on the late medieval period, perhaps 14th or 15th century.

Lead papal bulla, probably of Gregory IX (1227-41), cut across in antiquity and very worn since. Originally circular, the bulla has been chopped horizontally just beneath the upper line of text on the obverse. There is an off-centre vertical line of bending and cracking on the obverse, and a neat groove in the corresponding position on the reverse, suggesting that the cord has been removed either by bending and cracking open the bulla, or by cutting and the bulla later bending at this weak point. On the obverse, only the worn and damaged letters G R E can be seen, within a borde…

Pointed-oval, 33.4 x 22.5mm. Simple fleur-de-lis. + S' : hVGONIS: TUkkE: (Seal of Hugh Tuck). The engraving is neat and expert, with a double-barred N and a Roman E. The thickness away from the lug is 3.3mm, and the weight is 15.8g. 13th century. The surname Tukke (now Tuck) is recorded in Norfolk in the 12th and 13th centuries (Reaney and Wilson, Dictionary of English Surnames, under Tuck) and probably…

Part of a large flat circular lead weight. Originally c. 58mm in diameter, just under half now survives with a maximum dimension of 55.2mm. It measures 26mm perpendicular to this and varies between c. 10 and 11mm thick. The break is worn, but appears to have been neatly cut, with oblique grooves on one arris. There are no markings. It now weighs 107.2g (3.78oz) so may be part of an 8oz weight of medieval or early post-medieval date. Compare NMGW-81D466 (which has decoration suggesting a medieval date), SWYOR-FF1D87 and CORN-F1C5D6. There are also several similar lead weights listed by…

Conical lead weight. The base is flat and circular, diameter 23mm, with a lump of iron projecting from the centre and then extending to one side. The sides of the weight are straight but slope unevenly, one side being steeper than the other; the total height is 40mm. The apex has a thin projection of lead, suggesting a broken suspension loop, but there is a little iron visible here as well; a magnet is strongly attracted to this part of the object, suggesting that there is more iron inside the weight than can now be seen. It weighs 95.0g (3.35 oz). The proportions and general ap…

Lead pot mend, one face larger, flatter and sub-triangular, the other smaller, lumpier and D-shaped. The larger face measures 21 x 23mm and has concentric wrinkles, probably caused by shrinkage on cooling. The smaller face measures 17 x 13mm. The total thickness is 8mm and the object weighs 15.72g. Probably medieval, possibly Roman.

Standing conical lead weight, probably of medieval or early post-medieval date. The base is circular, 16-16.5mm in diameter, and flat but slightly slanting so that the weight does not stand perfectly upright. The sides taper to a rectangular cross-section, approximately 12 x 5mm where there is a circular perforation 3.5mm in diameter. Lead papal bulla, now worn, damaged and distorted. It is circular, c. 38mm in diameter, and 5.2mm thick. It weighs 54.1g. There is no obvious cord hole and the die-axis is about 1o'clock (see below for Tim Pestell's comment on the die-axis). The obverse has relief lettering that is now very difficult to read. The letters GRE can just be seen at the top, then GOR on the second line, then PP on the third. The issuing pope was therefore one of the Gregorys. The reverse is much clearer. It has a beaded border, and within are the letters SPA SPE at the top; the S has a crossbar a…

Flat circular medieval lead seal matrix, 25mm in diameter. Neatly made with rounded edges, 3.5mm thick at most. The central motif is a small neat equal-armed cross, deeply engraved, with slight serifs. The inscription is set between neat, perhaps compass-drawn, grooves, and consists of neat, widely spaced letters. It reads + S ADE: BETE (Seal of Adam Beater, perhaps). A chunk is missing from the edge, and has carried away parts of two letters, the S and A, and any apostrophe or stop between them. The break is patinated. Medieval lead seal matrix. Flat and pointed-oval, now incomplete, with just under half missing (fresh breaks and an unstable, corroding edge). The part that is missing seems to be the top half, as there is no lug or any other feature on the reverse. The central motif is very difficult to make out but it may be the bottom half of a fleur-de-lis, with a triangle for a stem and the base of two curling side leaves. The inscription is set between two plain grooves, and the surviving part reads ... BEAT RICI... (probably originally Seal of Beatrice). The letters are well spaced, partic…
