Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete openwork lead-alloy mount with iron rivet. The mount is flat, and the surviving part consists of part of a circular frame with a pointed projection or terminal. The frame is a low D shape in cross-section, and surrounds a trefoil plant with stem rising from the area by the terminal. The trefoil has a larger central leaf and smaller side leaves; all are roughly rounded, and the central one is now bent.  The iron rivet projects from the flat reverse of the terminal to a total thickness of 7.3mm. The object is rather mis-cast, with seams and flashes uncleaned, a…

Object type: TOY
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Part of a lead-alloy toy of 16th- to 19th-century date, apparently originally a female figure with a wheel rather than feet. Only the skirt of the figure survives, with curved sides and a straight hem. This is seen in profile, and is two sheets thick as if made as a cone and then squashed flat. It is decorated on both faces and is slightly asymmetric. The rear of the woman's skirt is more strongly curved (as if over a bustle) and is decorated with vertical ridges representing pleats. The front falls almost straight from the waist and is at firsrt sight undecorated. A ridged line …

Object type: SPOON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of lead-alloy spoon of post-medieval date. Part of the bowl and part of the stem (or handle) survive, and the broken edges of the bowl show the crumbly delamination characteristic of a pewter or other lead alloy. The break in the stem is more smoothly patinated. The stem is basically rectangular in cross-section at the break, with bevelled edges on both front and reverse, and a midrib about 2mm wide on the reverse. The stem flares from the break to a maximum of 10mm wide, then tapers again, but this flare and taper is all within the bevel; the central flat part of the stem…

Complete toy gridiron with fish, made from a lead/tin alloy (pewter) with a patina which is shiny in patches. The gridiron is basically rectangular but slightly trapezoidal, flaring from the handle end; it has six bars of equal thickness and triangular cross-section parallel to the handle, and a similar transverse bar to either end. The longer transverse bar has a backwards-curving hook to either end, one now crushed. The shorter transverse bar, at the handle end, is decorated with oblique ribbing giving a cabled effect. This bar has an angular U-shaped arrangement at either end as if…

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Unusual form of hooked tag. The plate is made from lead alloy, with a tall flat-topped cylindrical central boss around which is a raised circle. Outside the circle the edge is fragmentary, but looks lumpy and may originally have been a ring of pellets. On the reverse is the scar from a missing loop, which ran straight across the upper part of the plate. At the base of the plate is a separate copper-alloy hook, made from circular-section wire and set into a blob of lead alloy. This hooked tag is large, and quite complex in manufacture, yet made from a very cheap alloy. The metal m…

Lozenge-shaped armorial shield made from a lead alloy covered with a fragmentary thin shiny sheet, perhaps made of silver. The arms are in relief and there are no colours or tinctures surviving. There appears to be some iron corrosion on the reverse but no clear means of attachment. The lozenge indicates that these are the arms of a woman, and the lack of impaling shows that the woman was unmarried. The arms are: quarterly 1 and 4: or on a pile engrailed sable, between two fountains barry wavy of six argent and azure three crosses-crosslet of the first. 2 and 3: argent on a bend sa…

Large heptagonal lead-alloy harness boss. Thick and flat, it has relief decoration around an undecorated central roundel; seven pairs of ?leaves project from the roundel and are joined by arcs which form small panels. In each of this panel is a more conventional leaf. There is unclear relief decoration around the edge. On the reverse are the stubs of two attachment rivets or spikes.

Fragment of a lead-alloy horse-harness boss, originally a circular domed mount with a flange around the edge. Only a tiny part of the flange survives, with cast relief decoration of a radiating acorn and oak leaf. It is well made and part of a border which probably consisted of alternating acorns and oak leaves.

Decorated plaque with no means of attachment surviving. The object is heavy and dark grey in colour, and may be made from a lead/copper or lead-tin alloy. It is basically flat and sub-rectangular, with all the edges and corners rounded and looking as if a die had been pressed into a blob of soft ?melted metal. The relief decoration is on one face only, and consists of a naked copulating couple standing under a tree to the right as you look at it. One of the woman's legs is raised and held by the man around his waist. A rather lumpy raised border to the top of the plaque may be the bra…

Object type: DRESS FASTENER (DRESS)
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Published Find published
Catch-piece from a dress fastener made of a silvery metal, probably a lead/tin alloy with a high proportion of tin. The plate is oval, and decorated with three concentric ridges around the edge; the central ridge is beaded. Within the ridges is a complicated and apparently asymmetric relief scrolly ?foliage design. Each of the long sides has a small decorative projecting lug; one of the short sides has a much larger trefoil lug with two pellets and a perforation. The other short side has a rectangular loop in which to engage the matching hook, with a small circular perforated lug on e…

Lead-alloy button. The alloy may be pewter, as the edges of the button are laminating; it was probably originally circular. The relief design on the flat front is rather crudely made. It shows a profile bust of a crowned king, presumably Charles II. The top of the crown is missing, but there are two crosses on its lower half and a band of ladder pattern around the base. From the crown to the bottom of the button is a length of wavy hair; in front of this the details are harder to discern but probably include a face above a wide projecting ?arm. There is a C in front of the face and an…
