Complete toy gridiron with fish, made from a lead/tin alloy (pewter) with a patina which is shiny in patches. The gridiron is basically rectangular but slightly trapezoidal, flaring from the handle end; it has six bars of equal thickness and triangular cross-section parallel to the handle, and a similar transverse bar to either end. The longer transverse bar has a backwards-curving hook to either end, one now crushed. The shorter transverse bar, at the handle end, is decorated with oblique ribbing giving a cabled effect. This bar has an angular U-shaped arrangement at either end as if…

Object type: PILGRIM BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Lead-alloy pilgrim's badge depicting St Andrew, now bent in half. An upright rectangular plaque, it has a surviving projection at one lower corner that would originally have extended to a stitching loop; the other three corners are broken. St Andrew is in the centre of the plaque, wearing a striped or pleated gown drawn in at the waist; his limbs are splayed as if attached to an X-shaped cross. He faces the observer, but his face is very crude indeed with two large round eyes, a round nose and two large straight lips filling the whole of the space. The arms emerge from the gown to…

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Unusual form of hooked tag. The plate is made from lead alloy, with a tall flat-topped cylindrical central boss around which is a raised circle. Outside the circle the edge is fragmentary, but looks lumpy and may originally have been a ring of pellets. On the reverse is the scar from a missing loop, which ran straight across the upper part of the plate. At the base of the plate is a separate copper-alloy hook, made from circular-section wire and set into a blob of lead alloy. This hooked tag is large, and quite complex in manufacture, yet made from a very cheap alloy. The metal m…

Lozenge-shaped armorial shield made from a lead alloy covered with a fragmentary thin shiny sheet, perhaps made of silver. The arms are in relief and there are no colours or tinctures surviving. There appears to be some iron corrosion on the reverse but no clear means of attachment. The lozenge indicates that these are the arms of a woman, and the lack of impaling shows that the woman was unmarried. The arms are: quarterly 1 and 4: or on a pile engrailed sable, between two fountains barry wavy of six argent and azure three crosses-crosslet of the first. 2 and 3: argent on a bend sa…

Flat rectangular pilgrim's badge made from lead, now bent and torn. One corner is incomplete, and the other three show slight expansion towards their missing attachment loops; otherwise the badge is complete. It is decorated with a central motif of St Paul (with a pointed beard and bald forehead) on the left, and St Peter (with a rounded beard and curly hair) on the right. Both saints are nimbed and dressed in flowing robes, and both hold their symbol obliquely in their outer hand. St Paul holds a sword (symbol of his martyrdom by beheading), and St Peter holds a large key with the el…

Workflow stage: Published Find published
Large 'spangle', made of lead-tin alloy and in excellent condition. It thin and flat, and basically circular with a trapezoidal projection at one edge with two irregular perforations for sewing on to the garment. The circular area is decorated with a tiny central boss that, oddly, projects on the reverse as well. From this radiate sixteen fine relief lines, alternately long and short. The short lines end in pellets, and the long lines split into two out-curling strands which each end in pellets. This makes a kind of flower motif, which is surrounded by a triple-line border and the…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Fragment of lead-alloy nummular brooch. Just a tiny scrap of the edge survives, with relief decoration consisting of a border of ladder pattern, an inner border of pellets, and an inner field of geometrically intersecting straight lines. On the reverse is a transverse pin lug. These brooches are so called because they are ultimately derived from coins; the borders are imitating the filigree settings that were added to coins to make the originals. The fragment measures 22 x 13 mm; the brooch would originally have been about 40 mm in diameter.

Unidentified object made of a lead alloy, with some silvery ?rubbed areas which may possibly be inlaid silver wires. Most of the object is made of very thin sheet, but across the ?top is a chunky lozenge- or pentagonal-section moulding with transverse ribbing on the flat upper face. The sheet then curves down away from this moulding. Running down the sheet perpendicular from the chunky moulding is a narrow moulding which appears to have some slight transverse grooving or ridging at the lower end. This moulding separates two incomplete spirals, or pairs of concentric circles, made fr…

Decorated plaque with no means of attachment surviving. The object is heavy and dark grey in colour, and may be made from a lead/copper or lead-tin alloy. It is basically flat and sub-rectangular, with all the edges and corners rounded and looking as if a die had been pressed into a blob of soft ?melted metal. The relief decoration is on one face only, and consists of a naked copulating couple standing under a tree to the right as you look at it. Lead alloy disc, 36.5 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick, with a ?copper-alloy tube attached to the reverse, presumably to make the object a mount, and filled with lead alloy. The front of the disc has relief decoration of a triple-strand border around two concentric hexagons both with incurved sides. In the centre of the inner hexagon are six radiating lines. This object has been shown to various curators at the British Museum (Leslie Webster and Susan Youngs of Medieval and Modern Europe, and Gareth Williams and Barrie Cook of Coins and Medals); all agree that it is very unlikely to be a…

Catch-piece from a dress fastener made of a silvery metal, probably a lead/tin alloy with a high proportion of tin. Each of the long sides has a small decorative projecting lug; one of the short sides has a much larger trefoil lug with two pellets and a perforation.
