Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Lead pilgrim's ampulla, flat and now rather damaged. The lower part is rounded, and the upper part is flaring; one of the 'handles' is missing and the upper part is cracked and stressed. There is decoration on both faces, but on the lower halves only. One face has a large crown with cross-hatching below; the other has a quatrefoil, with a central rib and leaf-like veins on each foil. It would originally have held holy water from a shrine, but the specific shrine cannot now be identified. Medieval, probably 14th century. This ampulla is noted by Anderson (2010, 187, table 1…

Copper-alloy annular brooch, circular and 35 mm in diameter. The frame is rectangular in cross-section, 6.5 mm wide and 2 mm thick, with a very narrow (2 mm wide) pin constriction. The pin is missing. The upper surface of the brooch is engraved with a well-made border groove around each edge. In between is an inscription in small black-letter; the letters which are rather poorly made and spaced, and occasionally cut the inner border groove. The first three, next to the pin constriction, read ihc and are quite well cut; there is then a quatrefoil in a lozenge. After this the quality fal…

Lead-alloy pilgrim's badge depicting St Andrew, now bent in half. An upright rectangular plaque, it has a surviving projection at one lower corner that would originally have extended to a stitching loop; the other three corners are broken. St Andrew is in the centre of the plaque, wearing a striped or pleated gown drawn in at the waist; his limbs are splayed as if attached to an X-shaped cross. He faces the observer, but his face is very crude indeed with two large round eyes, a round nose and two large straight lips filling the whole of the space. The arms emerge from the gown to…

Small copper-alloy side-looped spearhead or arrowhead. Most of the blade is missing, with a corroded and slightly worn break just above the socket; in addition, quite a bit of one face of the socket is missing just below the base of the blade. The side loops are small, and there is a rounded midrib to the blade. Deep brown patina with areas of pale green corrosion where damage (possibly recent) has occurred. Surviving length 61 mm, estimated original length c. 83-108 mm. Surviving width (probably only slightly less than the original width) 16 mm, external diameter at socket 15 mm, weig…

Copper-alloy basal-looped or pegged spearhead, very worn and corroded. The base of the socket and possible loops, plus the tip, are missing, along with much of the wings. The wings were probably originally quite narrow, as edge bevels survive in two small areas. The midrib is rounded. Possible basal loops are suggested by spurs at the base of the wings, with gaps above. Although it is possible that the base of originally solid unlooped wings have merely corroded away leaving these spurs, and that this is therefore a pegged spearhead, the long narrow form and concave channels beside the…

Fragment of copper-alloy rib-bladed ?side-looped ?spearhead. The fragment is from the lower part of the blade, and retains part of the midrib/socket. The blade is basically flat, but has a curving rib on both faces which runs roughly parallel to the blade edge, about a third of the way from the edge to the midrib. Deep brown patina. The breaks (paler green/brown) are not recent but are probably not ancient. Surviving length 46 mm, weight 17.0g. The curving rib is unusual. It is likely that it derives from the straight ribs on the Irish kite-shaped side-looped spearheads of the early Mi…

Tiny copper-alloy clasp or catch, probably from a bag or box. It consists of a bar 2.5 mm wide, D-shaped in cross-section, decorated with unevenly spaced transverse grooves, with flattened circular terminals 4 mm across. One terminal is pierced, and probably revolved around a peg; the other is also pierced, but has a section of the circumference near the bar cut out to make a hook. This probably engaged with a second peg on the bag/box lid or body to fasten it. These objects are found occasionally in graves of the seventh or early eighth century AD but are exceptionally rare metal-dete…

Decorated swivel, thought to be part of an elaborate dog's lead or similar. Made from copper alloy, it has an openwork flattened-sphere centre (23 x 32 mm) and a separate swivelling pierced element at either flattened end which would originally have held a suspension ring. The central 'sphere' is made up of four openwork circles, each enclosing a four-leafed plant. One of the leaves is always very small, and they all end in scrolly curls. Each one has an engraved midrib. Obliquely set across the base of the plant are two further grooves, with ribbing at right angles below.…

Fragment of copper-alloy spearhead tip, lozenge-shaped in cross-section and with a lozenge-shaped socket reaching to within about 35 mm of the broken end. All edges, except tip break, are severely abraded. The tip break is therefore probably more recent, though it actually shows a slight casting void. The lozenge-shaped cross-section socket is a characteristic of Wilburton form spearheads (cf. the Isleham hoard) of the Late Bronze Age, c. 1200-1000 BC.

Fragment of copper-alloy spearhead. The very tip is missing (old break) and so is most of the socket, with just a small part visible. The break at the socket is old and very straight, looking almost like a deliberate cut, but there are no cut marks visible under the microscope. The socket edge has a small casting flaw and the spearhead may instead have been neatly snapped. The edges have been deliberately blunted, with hammer and file marks visible under the microscope, and the blunt edges are old and patinated. The date of this blunting and possible re-use is uncertain. The patina is …

Small copper-alloy pegged spearhead, complete except for very end of tip which has been recently blunted/rounded. Some bare metal is visible here and it seems that the blunting may have happened within the last 100 years (during re-use as a toy?). Also slightly bent towards the tip when viewed from the side. Blade edges appear relatively worn. Original surface is patinated medium/dark green where surviving, but much lost due to slight surface corrosion (and ?agricultural abrasion on one face). Circular hole (diameter 4-5 mm) on either side of socket under blade. Length 71 mm, max width…

Tip of narrow copper-alloy spearhead which is curiously curved and must have been bent in antiquity. There is no trace of the socket, but as the fragment is only 32 mm long and 9 mm max wide this is perhaps not surprising. The tip curves smoothly from the break at the wider end (neither particularly old nor particularly new) to a sharp tip, and there is no hint of stress to the metal. The bend is almost all in one plane - side-to-side - with only a very slight hint of a front-to-back curve. The edges are sharp, and there is a rounded midrib; in section the spearhead tip is lozengiform …

Incomplete copper-alloy spearhead, tip and socket end missing (old, patinated breaks); slightly bent near tip. The length of socket into the mid-rib is quite short, suggesting a non-lead copper alloy. Narrow, slightly flame-shaped blade form, with concave channel beside mid-rib. The mid-rib is angular nearer the tip but becomes rounded towards the socket end. The surface is eroded and partially pitted, though there is little obvious active bronze disease. Mainly deep brown patina. Rowlands (1976) group 2 side-looped spearhead; a similar, but slightly larger, parallel comes from Burnt F…
