Object type: RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Ring made from plaited silver wire. Each strand of the plait basically consists of six wires, although in places due to the ending of various strands this drops to five or four. The wires in each strand are neatly parallel. The sides of the ring are not straight; they are C-shaped in cross-section, with the exterior of the ring convex and the interior concave. The ring is now slightly squashed, and measures 20 x 16.5 mm externally and 4 mm deep. Similar rings made of plaited groups of silver wires are known across the country; they vary in size, shape and tightness of plait. Where the…

Workflow stage: Published Find published
Pointed-oval lead seal matrix, seen at Ipswich metal-detecting club. A scan of the matrix was subsequently made available. The seal matrix has a curvilinear central motif which is hard to identify. The inscription has no initial mark, and appears to read S'AMICIE SAILE, although the last part of the surname is uncertain; the IL could alternatively be an N and the E could be a C. The inscription can be translated as Seal of Amice Saile; Amice is a woman's name. 13th century.

Unidentified object made from copper alloy, in form very similar to the 'lyre-shaped' buckles used in the 15th century. It is openwork and roughly oval in outline. One end has a basically rectangular perforation and the other end has two oval perforations; these combine to form the 'lyre' shape. One of the short edges of the rectangular perforation (nearest the ovals) is incurved and has rounded corners. Beyond the two oval perforations is a terminal, now probably incomplete, formed from two back-to-back scrolls with a triangular perforation in between. There are two other areas o…

Fragment of a 'mustard' quern made from imported Rhenish lava. About a quarter survives; its diameter is c. 170 mm, it is c. 35 mm thick, and its central hole has a diameter of c. 40 mm. Probably an upper stone, its grinding surface is harp-dressed and the other surface is roughly pecked. Below the widest point the object then tapers again slightly to a collar, below which its cross-section is circular. The circular shaft tapers quite quickly and is bent into a loop; it ends at a globular terminal. The object is quite worn and corroded, but it appears to be complete, and the bend does not appear to have caused any stress to the metal. Small key made from folded copper-alloy sheet. Most of the bow is missing, but the surviving fragment of perforation shows that this was circular and that the bow was made from a single thickness of sheet. The sheet had to be fairly wide to accommodate the bow, and the stem is made from folding the sheet's width in on itself from the bow end to form a tapering shape. The uncut bit is simply made from two wider thicknesses of the sheet, with a gap at the fold to produce a pierced tip. Surviving length 27 mm, width (length of bit) 10 mm, thickness 3 mm. Dating such a simple key is t…

Small bell made from copper-alloy sheet. At the top is a suspension loop, then after a short solid narrowed neck the sheet is bent around to form a long conical body. The end is cut into four points which are bent inwards to retain the pea. When the bell is held with the suspension hole running from side to side (as if strung on a necklace) the seam falls at the reverse and the front is gilded and decorated with five neat transverse grooves. The grooves definitely do not extend around the back of the bell and the gilding appears not to either. This bell would have been worn on a sa…

Only a tiny part of this exists, with an irregular U-shaped top covered in grey solder. It seems likely either that this foot broke off its vessel, and had to be replaced, or was cast as a replacement to a broken-off foot. Frame and rotating end from a strap clasp, made from copper alloy. The frame is basically square, although the sides are slightly outcurved; each side has a small transverse moulding towards either end. The rotating end has a plate made from copper-alloy sheet, which is narrowed to fold around the outer edge of the frame. The wider part has a solid copper-alloy bar-mount attached to it by a single copper-alloy rivet; the bar-mount is set at a slightly oblique angle. The opened-out length is 21 mm, but when the rotating end is closed back onto the frame it measures 14.5 mm.

Barred mount made from copper alloy. The plate is made out of thin sheet, and appears to have lost most of its edges. As it survives now, it is roughly trapezoidal, with a bar-mount running across the longest edge. This is made of thicker sheet, C-shaped in cross-section, and has a notch in the centre of the inner edge (i.e. the edge furthest from the edge of the plate). The bar-mount is attached by a separate copper-alloy rivet 5 mm long, with the remains of a separate rove made from copper-alloy sheet. The plate has no other rivet hole, so is presumably (although not necessarily…

Copper-alloy strap-slide, used for holding down the free end of a strap. It is trapezoidal, with a 22 mm long upper edge which has a raised scalloped central ridge. The opposite edge is 20 mm long and has a central circular rivet hole which is blocked by the remains of a copper-alloy rivet. This rivet would have been internal to the strap-slide and would have fixed it to the strap.

Copper-alloy loop, probably a strap-slide. One end is rectilinear and the other is more rounded; the loop measures 22 x 7 mm and is 2 mm thick. Strap-slides hold down the free end of a strap, so this strap would have to be quite thin.

Copper-alloy strap-slide, used for holding down the free end of a strap. It is pentagonal, with an angled upper edge 26.5 mm long; both the upper edge and the sides are trapezoidal in cross-section and have visible filemarks. The opposite edge is 22.5 mm long, and a flatter rectangle in cross-section; it has a central circular rivet hole in which a separate copper-alloy rivet survives together with a small sheet rove. This rivet is internal to the strap-slide and retains a scrap of pale textile.

Cast copper-alloy front plate from a 'crescentic' strap-end. The attachment end is not actually a crescent, as the points are joined to form a sub-circular shape with an oval perforation at the base. Above is a sub-triangular or trefoil terminal with crudely made relief decoration resembling a bush or tree; the 'crescent' has engraved decoration representing the roots. The 'crescent' has four rivet holes, all blocked with iron corrosion, and is recessed for a missing sheet backplate. There are traces of a shiny white-metal coating on all surfaces except for the recess. 15th century.

Corroded strap-end made from two pieces of copper alloy. The attachment end is broken and the two sheets have sprung apart and bent; the surviving length is c. 37 mm. A wavy line of rocker-arm engraving can just be made out running the length of one sheet. The long edges are cut into a gently wavy outline towards the closed end, and the end itself is pointed. Here the two sheets are joined, perhaps by solder; although it is not possible to see any rivets, perhaps this is merely due to corrosion. Probably 13th or 14th century.

Strap-end made from a single piece of copper-alloy sheet bent in half and secured by a single separate copper-alloy rivet. The rivet is neatly concealed at one end but has a conspicuous (but neat) thick round disc head at the other. The strap-end appears to have been made out of sheet previously used for something else, because it tapers from 14 mm wide at one end to 11 mm wide at the other. The unbent length is about 27 mm, and it is possible that a single sheet from a composite strap-end was modified to form this object.
