Description: Complete long silver ingot of slightly irregular shape, but with a clear rounded top and slightly flattened underside. It has one neatly rounded end, 11mm wide and 5.8mm thick. One long edge runs roughly at right angles to this end, and the other long edge flares slightly. The maximum width of 13.5mm is close to the other end, and here there is a rounded angle, with the ingot tapering steeply to meet the other long edge in a rounded point. The ingot is sub-triangular or drop-shaped in cross-section, with the long straight edge being thicker and the top then …

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Silver strip, probably a finger-ring, now in two pieces (broken during discovery). It is bent out of shape but appears to originally have been circular, with half of the circle surviving (c. 20mm in original diameter). The strip has a consistent width of 4.5mm to 5mm (perhaps depending on how worn the edges are) and is a low D-shape in cross-section, 1.0mm thick. There is no decoration on either the convex exterior or the flat interior. One of the ends (on the smaller fragment) is neatly cut across and finished, and although the other is more rounded and possibly wo…

Object type: RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Ring made from plaited silver wire. Each strand of the plait basically consists of six wires, although in places due to the ending of various strands this drops to five or four. The wires in each strand are neatly parallel. The sides of the ring are not straight; they are C-shaped in cross-section, with the exterior of the ring convex and the interior concave. The ring is now slightly squashed, and measures 20 x 16.5 mm externally and 4 mm deep. Similar rings made of plaited groups of silver wires are known across the country; they vary in size, shape and tightness of plait. Where the…

Gilded silver pin with hollow spherical filigree-decorated head. The head is now incomplete, but can be seen to have been made in two halves with a horizontal soldered seam. The diameter at the seam is 7 mm. Each half is decorated with three pellets, each set within a collar of beaded wire and then surrounded by an outer circle of beaded wire. In between these circles are further single pellets. At the very top there would probably have been another pellet, and in the centre of the lower half the shaft emerges. Most of the top half is missing (fresh breaks), showing that the sha…

Tiny silver annular brooch. The frame is circular and just 13 mm in diameter; it is circular in cross-section and 1.5 mm in diameter. Most of the frame is covered with a regular series of narrow closely-spaced grooves, which run right the way around it to create a ribbed effect. There is a short area, perhaps 5 mm long, bare of grooves and towards one end of this the frame gently narrows to a slight pin constriction. The loop of a silver pin survives on the constriction; it is made of flat silver strip 1.5 mm wide.

Stem from the handle of a silver spoon, now very bent. One end is broken before any knop, and the other is broken just after the junction with the bowl. The unbent length of the stem is c. 83 mm and it is hexagonal in cross-section; it flares from 4 mm wide and 2.5 mm thick at the knop end to 5 mm wide and 4 mm thick at the junction with the bowl. The small stub of bowl which survives retains no curvature. On the reverse, the stem continues as a small raised equilateral triangle; there is no rat-tail.
