Three pieces of box mount, all perhaps from the same box. They are all D-shaped in section, and all vary in width, one from 4 to 5.5 mm, another from 5 to 6 mm, and the third from 6 to 7 mm. All are corroded but have the worn remains of relief decoration at one end, consisting of transverse ridges and V-shapes with the centre of the final V shape extending as a tapering point a little further down the highest part of the mount (on the widest one this tapering point is not visi…

Copper-alloy finger-ring. The basic shape is of the type known as 'stirrup-shaped', i.e. with the bezel extended into a point into which the oval setting is recessed. This example has a fairly low bezel and the stone or glass setting is now missing, leaving the white adhesive visible beneath. The bezel is 4 mm wide and tapers both in width and thickness into the hoop, which is 3.5 mm wide and 1 mm thick. In cross-section the hoop is biconvex. The ring measures 21 mm in external width and 25 mm from the top of the bezel to the bottom of the hoop. 'Stirrup-shaped' rings date from the…

Rectangular frame, possibly from a buckle but more probably from a strap clasp. The sides are curved in the centre; both the bar and outer edge are narrowed. If this is a buckle, the bar would have held a plate and pin and the outer edge would have held a separate roller; if it is a clasp, the bar would have held a plate and the outer edge would have held a rotating end. In general, however, buckles of this shape have a thickened and grooved outer edge which may be imitating a separate roller, so it is more likely that the object is a clasp. 13th to 15th century.17

Copper-alloy buckle frame, plate and pin. The frame is oval and 28 mm wide; it is worn, but two pairs of oblique grooves can be seen decorating the outer edge. The bar is offset and narrowed, and holds the pin and the two hinge loops of the plate. The plate is basically rectilinear; it flares from 17 mm at the attachment end to 20 mm at the opposite end, where frame recesses and a pin slot have been cut and the rest of the sheet has been folded under to form a short underplate. There are two copper-alloy rivets with large circular heads at the hinge end which join the upper plate t…

Copper-alloy buckle plate, now very corroded. The plate is basically D-shaped, and made from a piece of thin oval copper-alloy sheet folded in half with frame recesses and a pin slot cut. Three copper-alloy rivets join the plates together, and also secure a cast copper-alloy openwork mount to the upper plate. This mount is B-shaped internally, and at the junction of the two lobes of the B there is a projecting stylised animal head. One of the rivets passes through the animal head and the other two pass through thickened areas in the corners. Another buckle made from thin sheet wit…

The terminal is 17 mm long and has elaborately cut-out sides forming a trefoil on a long stem, with two transverse lobes crossing the stem. There is a single copper-alloy rivet at the attachment end and another at the terminal. One of the plates is decorated with a saltire of rocker-arm engraving at the attachment end, and an untidy line of rocker-arm extending from this towards the terminal. 14th century.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Tiny annular brooch frame made of silver with gilding on all faces. Circular and 14 mm in diameter, it is D-shaped in cross-section with a flat reverse. There are two longitudinal oval settings on the frame, each retaining a tiny purple cabochon-cut stone, perhaps an amethyst. From each end of the setting a long transversely ribbed neck emerges, curving around to form the circle, and ending in an animal head which has moulded ears and moulded and dotted circle eyes. Between one pair of heads is a flattened and expanded rounded pin rest, which has decoration of radiating grooves and…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Large rectangular copper-alloy mount, measuring 45 x 32 mm. Each of the corners has decorative cut-outs, which meet in the centre of the short edges with a V-shaped cut-out which runs into the interior of the mount as a groove. In the centre of the mount is a circular hole 5 mm in diameter, and in each corner is a separate 4 mm long copper-alloy rivet. The mount is decorated with lines of rocker-arm engraving; between each rivet and the short edge is a short line of rocker-arm parallel to the edge, and the rest of the space on the mount is filled with four rocker-arm saltires. The …

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper-alloy strap fitting, perhaps a buckle or perhaps a looped mount. It consists of an oval frame or loop, 12 mm wide and 14 mm long, with an integral plate or mount 12 mm long which flares from 7 mm wide at its junction with the loop to 9 mm wide at the far end. The plate has two holes set longitudinally. The object may be a buckle, with one hole for a pin and one for a rivet; originally it was thought to be an incomplete double-looped buckle with central plate (as Egan and Pritchard 1991, no. 488, thought to be from a spur) but it is now clear that the far end of the plate is an…

Workflow stage: Published Find published
Flat rectangular pilgrim's badge made from lead, now bent and torn. One corner is incomplete, and the other three show slight expansion towards their missing attachment loops; otherwise the badge is complete. It is decorated with a central motif of St Paul (with a pointed beard and bald forehead) on the left, and St Peter (with a rounded beard and curly hair) on the right. Both saints are nimbed and dressed in flowing robes, and both hold their symbol obliquely in their outer hand. St Paul holds a sword (symbol of his martyrdom by beheading), and St Peter holds a large key with the el…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Slightly irregular circular lead seal matrix, 20-21 mm in diameter. The reverse is decorated with an asymmetrical design of curving relief lines, and has an unpierced lug close to one edge. On the front, the central motif is a crescent moon and star. Around is an inscription reading something like * S ICCSEMOW - the second C may alternatively be an E or G, the E is very uncertain, and the M may instead be an H. The letters are not well spaced or sized. No suggestion can be given for what the inscription means, but the initial S presumably stands for Seal of.. and so the seal matri…

Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Incomplete and crushed large copper-alloy key. Most of the bow is missing and the original shape cannot be reconstructed. There is a moulding at the junction of the bow and the stem; the stem was originally hollow, and is now squashed and split with the very end missing. The bit is elaborate, with a deep cleft perpendicular to the stem which divides it into two; both halves have further shorter clefts and channels. The closest parallel in Egan 1998 is no. 313, which was excavated from a late 13th/early 14th century context. Surviving length 67 mm, 'width' (top of stem to base of bit) …

Circular lead seal matrix, 26 mm in diameter and flat with a 4 mm wide pierced lug (broken at the hole) extending from the top. There is no decoration on the reverse. The central motif is a sunken triangle presumably intended as a shield; there is no charge (heraldic decoration) on the shield. The engraving around is shallow but well formed and clear; it reads + S' ROGER' FILII ADE (Seal of Roger son of Adam, or Adamson). There is a small space-filling design after the E of Ade. 13th century.
