Unidentified lead object, cast in one piece, now incomplete. It has a flat base, probably originally roughly circular, but much of this is now missing; what remains is variable in thickness, at most 3mm thick. The reverse is flat and featureless, but the upper surface has the remains of four ribs arranged in a cross shape. These are D-shaped in cross-section, and two survive well, one badly and one not at all. There is a rounded boss in the centre of the cross, c. 4mm in diameter, which brings the maximum thickness of the object to 7.5mm. At the end of the three surviving cross arms a…

Unidentified and incomplete copper-alloy object of probable late medieval or early post-medieval date. It is thick and flat, and can be reconstructed to resemble a five-petalled flower or cinquefoil with a circular perforation. Only two of the petals now survive. They are almost identical, both being short and rounded with an engraved line running from the centre close to the edge, then turning a rounded obtuse angle to meet the circular perforation at an acute angle. Each is surrounded by three dots, one at the end of the engraved line near the edge of the petal and the others flanki…

Gilded copper-alloy object, probably of 12th- or 13th century date. It consists of a cast front plate and a fragmentary sheet backplate, held together by two copper-alloy rivets. The cast front is basically U-shaped with parallel long sides and a lot of surviving gilding. Along the length of the U it is perforated by two complete neat circular holes, each 10mm in diameter. A third similar hole is cut across by a straight edge which is at a slight angle to the long edges; it is difficult to tell whether this edge is complete or very neatly broken and smoothly worn. The two rivets are i…

Unidentified object made from copper alloy, in form very similar to the 'lyre-shaped' buckles used in the 15th century. It is openwork and roughly oval in outline. One end has a basically rectangular perforation and the other end has two oval perforations; these combine to form the 'lyre' shape. One of the short edges of the rectangular perforation (nearest the ovals) is incurved and has rounded corners. Beyond the two oval perforations is a terminal, now probably incomplete, formed from two back-to-back scrolls with a triangular perforation in between. There are two other areas o…

Unidentified object made from copper alloy. It consists of a long rod, 3.5 mm square in cross-section and with the corners bevelled; one end is broken and the other end terminates in an animal's head and a junction with a second missing element. There is a gently curving bend both downwards and sideways before the break, which has apparently caused no stress to the metal; it is hard to see if this is original or not, although the fact that the terminal end is also slightly downcurving might indicate that at least part is original. It is perhaps easiest to describe the decoration fro…

Gilded copper-alloy oval disc, now very corroded, measuring 39 x 35 mm. Very slightly convex, it is decorated on the outer face with a border of circular stamps, running all of the way around the edge and enclosing seven transverse rows of similar stamps. There are no stamps at the top - at least one if not two rows are missing - and here there is a roughly cut, or perhaps worn, oblique oval hole. This seems to have neater edges on the reverse, and so may have been cut from this side. The decoration dates it to the medieval period. This object is about the right size for a horse-h…

Narrow copper-alloy spike, circular in cross-section and tapering from 3 mm in diameter at the wider end. A transverse slot 2 mm wide has been formed near this end, pushing the metal out slightly to either side. There is also a tiny projection from the centre of the wider end. Although it is now worn and corroded, there are traces of gilding on the surface. The wear and corrosion make it difficult to tell if the wider end is original or broken; the projection may suggest that it is original. Decorative mount from an unidentified object, made from a thin rectangular sheet of dark copper alloy. The full length of 47.5 mm survives, but all of one long edge is missing leaving a surviving width of 29 mm. The positions of the surviving rivet holes, although irregularly placed, suggest an original width of c. 36 mm. Each surviving edge is decorated with a series of evenly spaced edge nicks which almost meet a grooved border. Within this is a more decorative border which may be of a different design on each edge. Fragment of copper-alloy rod, 45.5 mm long and rectangular in cross-section (5 x 3 mm). It has one narrow side cut into a series of 'crenellations' with the raised parts 3 mm long and the lowered parts 4 mm long. Copper-alloy unidentified object in the shape of a crude fleur-de-lis. 6 mm thick, one face has a broad groove down the central leaf of the fleur but the other face is flat. There is a copper-alloy rivet running through the tip of the central leaf, which projects equally on either face. This is definitely a rivet, not part of a suspension loop, as one end is burred over. The broken-off stem of the lis looks as if it might have had a slot across it, which would suggest a function as a knife end-cap, but end-caps from knives always have decoration on both faces. Probably medieval.
