Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small casket key, quite flat and carelessly made. The bow is circular, with a casting flaw leading to an internal thickening opposite the stem. The stem has a collar at the junction with the bow; the bow is oval-section and the pointed tip projects beyond the bit. The bit is rectangular and flat, and has a square cleft cut into the rear edge and two similar clefts cut into the leading edge. 45mm long, bow 15.5mm in diameter, 3mm thick at most. It weighs 5.61g and probably dates to the medieval period.

Tiny strap-end of 14th-century date, made from two pieces of copper-alloy sheet. One is shorter than the other and is smoothly polished; the other is much rougher and may have been a central spacer plate rather than a backplate. It is bent and one end is broken. The surviving end is cut into curved shoulders and then a relatively long terminal ending in a quatrefoil. The sheets are joined by a copper-alloy rivet through the quatrefoil. Surviving length 26mm, width 7mm, weight 0.57g.

Very worn medieval copper-alloy horse-harness pendant with incomplete loop. It is shield-shaped, with a straight top and sides curving to a point; the corners are now all worn and rounded. The shield (without loop) now measures 29mm long by 26mm wide. The loop is angled slightly forwards, flat on the reverse, and is pierced from side to side with a circular hole; it is now broken through this hole. No trace of any decoration survives on the shield, which is now only 1.5mm thick at most. The surviving total length is 35.5mm and the maximum width, at the broken loop, is 5mm. It weighs 5.58g.

Gilded late 11th- or 12th-century copper-alloy mount, probably from horse-harness. It is basically a short, wide rectangle with geometric decoration consisting of three wide flat-topped transverse (vertical) ridges dividing the mount into four gilded fields. These are decorated with closely spaced shallowly oblique grooves, alternating in direction field by field. Hints of grooves and gilding on the edges of the ridges suggest that both types of decoration carried on over them. The edges and corners of the rectangle are now worn and rounded. Barred mount made from copper alloy. The plate is made out of thin sheet and is roughly figure-of-eight shaped, with an oval lobe and a half-oval lobe. The oval lobe is at the attachment end, and has a single rivet. The half-oval lobe has a bar-mount running across it made of thick sheet, C-shaped in cross-section, attached by a second rivet. There is no notch in the bar-mount. Each rivet is made of copper-alloy and has a separate square or lozengiform rove made from copper-alloy sheet. The rivet at the attachment end is 3 mm long and that at the bar-mount is 5 mm long.

Rotating end from a strap clasp, made from copper alloy. The plate is made from a rectangular piece of sheet with one long edge bent into a cylinder. The other long edge has a rectangular projection in the centre, and close to this a bar-mount made from similar copper-alloy sheet is fixed to the plate by a single copper-alloy rivet. The bar-mount is set at a slightly oblique angle to the plate, which is not unusual for this type of object and appears to be deliberate.

Possible barred mount. A piece of copper-alloy sheet, now fragmentary but originally shield-shaped, has a broken rivet hole towards the pointed end. The straight end has a bar-mount fixed across it, made from solid rectangular-section copper alloy bar with the short ends bevelled, rather than the more usual curved piece of copper-alloy sheet. This is attached by separate two copper-alloy rivets rather than the more usual one; the more complete rivet is 5 mm long, and has corrosion around its shaft suggesting the original presence of a rove.

Strap clasp, with plate, frame and rotating end, all made from copper alloy. The plate is made from a strip folded in half and is now very fragmentary; a single incomplete rivet hole survives at the attachment end. The frame has strongly curved sides, each with a transverse moulding at either end. The rotating end is narrowed along one edge so that it can be wrapped around the outer edge of the frame. Cast copper-alloy leg from a vessel. A five-toed foot survives, 39 mm wide and 25 mm thick, with a groove separating this from the upper part which is D-shaped in cross-section. Only a tiny part of this exists, with an irregular U-shaped top covered in grey solder. It seems likely either that this foot broke off its vessel, and had to be replaced, or was cast as a replacement to a broken-off foot. The latter seems more likely as the edges of the top are not clearly broken. Vessels with these feet date from the mid thirteenth to the end of the sixteenth century.

Gilded copper-alloy buckle plate, now bent in half. Originally it was rectangular, with a surviving unbent length of c. 32 mm, and tapering from 14 mm wide at the broken hinge loops to 13 mm wide at the attachment end. There is a pin slot and frame recesses, and just behind these are two separate copper-alloy rivets with knobbed heads. There are two further rivet holes at the attachment end (one now incomplete). The plate is worn and corroded, but some decoration can be made out; there appear to be curving double chevrons, each with a row of circular punchmarks between the two line…

Double-looped copper-alloy buckle frame, both loops oval with pointed outer edges. The buckle is angled about the bar and there is iron corrosion on the bar and on one outer edge. In other places there are patches of dark grey patina, perhaps from a white-metal coating. At one end of the bar, the buckle frame has split through its thickness and one loop has broken. This is an odd place to split and perhaps indicates a point of weakness due to the construction method.

Copper-alloy key, missing its bit. The bow is circular internally, but externally is decorated with a pair of stylised three-dimensional animal heads, one on each side, which appear to be gripping the far end of the bow in their mouths. The stem is octagonally facetted. It begins with a short rounded section, which is divided from the rest of the stem by a ridge. Beyond this, about 15 mm of the stem is solid, and then it has an off-centre longitudinal hole which has broken through on one side. Total surviving length 56.5 mm. The metal is a very pale, but apparently stable, grey-green.…

Neither end is closed and there are no rivet holes, but one end does appear to have been flattened. This end appears to be complete, but the other looks as if it has been torn. Two lace-tags of much the same diameter and construction, but much longer, are illustrated in Margeson 1993; one is from a late 15th-century context, the other from a context of c. 1550-1700.
