Bronze palstave with 'trident' decoration, this palstave is unlooped and the blade end is missing. All surfaces are affected by invasive corrosion resulting in uneven surfaces with traces of a dark brown patina but mainly pale and medium green corrosive products. It is a Rowlands (1976, British Archaeology Report 31) Class 1 Group 3 'developed shield pattern' palstave, though the blade has suggestions of raised side flanges, especially on one face, which are reminiscent of Class 3 ('Birchington Type') palstaves. Both types are contemporary and date mainly from the end of the middle …

1: Fragment of bronze moulded mouth probably from a socketed axe. One side survives with a trace of casting sprue at the top of the socket. It has realtively slight single mouth moulding. It is patinated dark green and medium to dark brown on the interoir but affected by corrosion on the exterior resulting in some flaking and a medium green colouring. It measures 32mm in surviving length, 26mm in width and weighs 14.9g. 2: A small fragment of a bronze socketed implement, probably a socketed axe. The side splays out externally and inteernally, it appears to be near the end …

Length 50mm, width at maximum point in centre 6mm, thickness 5.5mm. Probably Bronze Age.

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Rounded bronze blade tip, probably from a sickle, possibly from a knife. Slight edge facets on both faces. A marked midrib is defined by slight concave gulleys on each side. The asymetrical form of the facets and the form of the midrib suggests that it is more likely to be a sickle than a knife. Mid to dark green-grey patina plus paler areas on the edges where corrosion products have been exposed by recent damage. Surviving length 25mm, width 19mm.

Short, very narrow, length of the blade from a copper alloy rapier with fluted blade cross-section. Multiple hammer marks and bending demonstrate deliberate breakage - which suggests the incorporation of a middle Bronze Age rapier into a late Bronze Age hoard. Dark deep brown patina. No obvious recent damage. The blade edge, where it srvives undamaged, is slightly rounded and relatively blunt. Surviving length 21mm, width 16mm, thickness 6mm. It should be noted that a bronze gouge has also been found (in 1993) on this mainly Iron Age/Roman site.

Small fragment of ribbed bronze 'plate' - probably plate scrap ingot of the Wilburton phase (LBA2). Dark grey, probably bronze with a high lead content. Flat underside, single narrow rib visible on upper face. all the edge breaks appear ancient. Surviving length (parallel to rib) 21.5mm, thickness with rib 4mm, thickness excluding rib 3mm. Very similar to finds in a hoard from Wantisden, Suffolk (WNN 013) and Isleham (Cambs) hoard, dated to the Wilburton phase.

Very small copper alloy 'knife-dagger' with triangular blade. Incomplete broad lozenge shaped tang with half central rivet hole surviving. Relatively good condition (ie few corrosion pocks) and paler colouring at tang end suggest the possible location of a hilt. The flat blade with wide edge bevels has numerous small corrosion pocks, especially on one face. Edges appear relatively worn and corroded. Breaks at the butt are patinated. Blade is patinated medium/dark brown, tang is pale/pale-medium brown. Some of the pocks show pale green corrosion products. Surviving length 36mm, width 22…

Bronze loop and part of a double socket moulding from a socketed axe. External casting seam is well-rounded so broken after finishing and perhaps use. Possible hammer breakage marks on the interior, suggesting it may be part of a hoard; the breaks are patinated. A few recent abrasion/scratch marks on the interior but otherwise the surface condition is relatively good, patinated dark green/black with some small paler green areas of invasive corrosion. Surviving length 38mm, surviving width 23mm
