The object may have been used as a writing implement but it is a lead object of any date between the late medieval period and the 19th century with a purpose that we can only guess at.

An incomplete lead alloy or pewter hawking whistle of Post-Medieval date, possibly dating from the 18th century. The whistle is cast in the form of a dog's head with a wide collar decorated with a ring and dot design. The dog is biting on an iron pin, which presumably would have formed a suspension ring. It measures 30.34x16.03x14.29mm and weighs 16.71g. The broken socket end is 13.41mm in diameter and is filled with hardened clay.

The object weighs 23.66g and its max.width (including projections) is 24.56mm. The projections seem to have extended all along the casting seams. One elaborate inverted V shape survives. It consist of a slightly tapering sheet tube with an applied transverse triple-rib at the centre, an elaborate openwork S-shaped handle below, and an egg-shaped hollow at the narrower end of the tube, also attached to the handle. An incomplete lead alloy whistle, perhaps for hunting, of early modern date (c.1800-1900) and cast in the form of a dog's head. The inside of the head is hollow. The curved edge of the sounding hole survives immediately behind the dog collar (similar can be seen on NMGW-159973) although the mouthpiece has been lost. Moulding seams are on the centre top and underside of the head. The dog has prominent eyes, large flat ears, and mouth in a growling position around a moulded hole, probably a suspension loop. The opening measures 5.3x3.8mm and the ridge 2.6mm in thickness and 1.7mm in height. The ridge consists of a central rib flanked by a lower rib to either side and appears to seal together the two hemispheres of the body. It is otherwise undecorated. An incomplete and squashed post-medieval sheet silver whistle of perhaps 17th century date, missing a section of the mouthpiece and a larger section of the open end. The object has been constructed from two pieces of sheet silver. The first piece has been rolled to form a tapering cylinder and shaped to form a D-shaped mouthpiece. The second piece sits internally running from the mouthpiece to the front edge of the D-shaped sound hole that has been cut away in the upper surface of the whistle. A third piece, now missing, would have formed a circular domed end cap to close the open end …

A fragment of undatable whetstone, roughly rectangular in shape and cross-section. It measures 31.59x24.70x22.10mm and weighs 32.2g. It is made from a mica rich, fine grained and dense stone with irregular breaks. The whetstone is broken at both short ends. The faces are much smoother than the broken ends and have rounded corners. It is these which were probably used for resharpening blades of knives, scythes, axes and other tools. All the faces have cut marks on them. Stray finds of whetstones are notoriously difficult to date and only very few found out of context can be dated t…
