Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A medieval (probably c.1200-1300) lead alloy seal matrix of tear-drop form with a solid ‘loop’ projecting from the rounded end. The reverse is undecorated and flat; the opposite face is also flat and bears an incomplete inscription within a pair of lines formed of conjoined circular punches, both tear-drop shaped (the larger flanking the edge of the matrix). There is no evidence of a central device within the smaller tear-drop shape. The inscription reads + SIGILLV:AGN (Seal of Agnes perhaps) and leaves circa one quarter of the inscription area unfilled. The solid ‘loop’ i…

A medieval (1250-1300) lead alloy pointed-oval seal matrix with a pierced lug to the reverse. The matrix depicts a bird vertically arranged, its feet to one side perhaps on a branch, its wings projecting upwards at the top but vertical to either side of the body. The body is decorated with horizontal ribs and the head is turned to one side with curved beak. The inscription around is within two linear borders and reads +S'.TOME.TE (?') GINES. Moulding seams are on the centre top and underside of the head. The dog has prominent eyes, large flat ears, and mouth in a growling position around a moulded hole, probably a suspension loop. An incomplete Roman (AD 43-410) lead alloy figurine of probably Mars and presumably wearing body armour. It is missing one arm, both legs and probably the crest of the helmet (all old damage). Additionally the face has a flat, wide cut downwards from the nose to the chin and the pronounced belly-armour has a similar but apparently shallower cut; these appear to be of relatively recent date and are possibly the result of plough damage. The head is of pointed-oval shape, with half consisting of a probably Corinthian helmet now missing its crest (a worn projection survives at the very t…

A post-medieval (c.1600-1900) cast lead alloy possible palm guard for use by a leather worker or sail maker to protect the palm whilst stitching. The shape of this example (oval, and thicker to one long edge than the other) suggests it may have solidifed in a shell. The underside is flat with an off-centre raised ring; to the opposite face this is at the centre of a wider (and more roughly shaped) circular depression. This other surface is smooth and contoured with a rough area to one end, presumably as a result of bubbles forming during the solidifying process. The object measu…

A post-medieval lead alloy circular token with the raised initials TC on both facees; the token is now a little bent.
