A flint single-platform core of Mesolithic or Neolithic date (10,000 - 2100 BC) with blade flakes removed part of the way round (type A2). The core is conical in shape and roughly lozenge-shaped in cross-section with a flat underside. The unworked areas are convex (mostly) and flat (underside and adjacent area). The worked face, roughly half of the outside surface, consists of five or six flake parallel flake removal scars. The flint is brown in colour, translucent at the very edges, with two small areas of an orangey-brown cortex. There is an opaque, heavily patinated grey area to on…

The core has a D-shaped cross-section and roughly parallel long edges. The convex face has one-direction flake removals (five), the flat face has one-direction diagonal flake removals (three) and one of the faces that joins them has apparently two one-direction flake removals. A small patch of cortex also survives on this face. The flint is opaque and off-white in places and bluey-grey in others. Iron staining survives along the arises. The objec…

A late Mesolithic to late Neolithic flint (7000 BC - 2100 BC) pick or chopping tool, a large core tool made on an elongated flint nodule which retains c.40% coretex. The object has a sub-triangular cross-section, with two faces of flake removal and one convex face retaining a pale orangey-brown cortex. The flint is grey-blue in colour and heavily patinated. Flake removals are transverse to the elongated shape of the object, angled towards the arise between the two worked faces. The tip has shorter flake removals to create a point on one of the worked faces and to one side of the con…

A Mesolithic (10,000 - 4000 BC) flint pick with an off-centre lozengiform cross-section, the apex of each face being left of centre with the rounded end positioned uppermost. Broad flake removals run generally from the apex to either long side. On one face there are narrow, long and thin removals from the apex to the rounded, thinner end of the object. To the opposite face at this point the flake removals are multi-directional and less clear. On this same face but at the opposite short end is a flake removal and possible hinge fracture beneath it, creating a horizonatal end extendin…

Both ends of the pick narrow to a point, one of which is thin and rounded with wide, short, semi-abrupt flake removals around the edge of the flatter face with a longer, wide flake extending towards the edge from the higher surface above. A Mesolithic - Neolithic (10,000 - 2100 BC) flint pick with a triangular cross-section and roughly parallel sides, all of which narrow to either end, one of which is a broad point and the other an apparently natural blunt end one set transversely to the point. This blunt end has a different surface colouring to most of the rest of the object, presumably an 'original' surface of the flint, now a creamy-orange 'light toffee' colour. While all three faces are of similar dimensions, the flat broad point gives one flat face and one with a prominent apex. Two long narrow flake scars are ap…

A Mesolithic to Neolithic (10,000 - 2,100 BC) flint flaked axehead, perhaps an adze, with a plano-convex profile. It is elliptical in shape with a slightly wider end (the cutting edge, 34.8 mm) than the other (the butt end, 27.2 mm). Although the sides are curving, the cutting edge itself is horizontal. There is perhaps some damage to the butt end resulting in it also being horizontal. The flint is opaque and creamy-grey in colour. There are prominent arises on both faces with iron staining. A small area of cortex remains close to the cutting edge on one face. The other face has ret…

Object type: HAMMERSTONE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A possible flint hammerstone, consisting of a rounded piece of brown-grey flint with some thick off-white patina and iron staining. There are areas of wear/ use (battering) on much of the surface with a few 'unused' areas, perhaps where the object was held in use or where parts of the edge have flaked away. This object is probably Prehistoric in date (Mesolithic to Bronze Age, c. 10,000 - 800 BC) but such stones have also been found in later contexts (e.g. Roman) and it is difficult to be certain of the date. Measures 81.18x77.56x67.35mm, weighs 475g.
