Anglo-Saxon cast copper alloy button brooch with a gilt surface. This brooch is an example of Avent and Evison Class Aii. Button brooches are circular in shape and resemble miniature saucer brooches, although the relationship between these two brooch classes is not clear. The brooch is 16mm in diameter, the thickness and weight are unknown. The brooch is slightly worn and corroded on raised areas and on edge of rim. The bright yellow gilt survives on the recesses of the brooch, and on the wide decorative border. The brooch does not have an upturned rim, and it is unclear if a rim was …

Anglo-Saxon bow brooch cast in copper alloy. The brooch has a semi-circular headplate with three small flat integral knobs. The left knob is semi-circular in shape and decorated with a small punched circle. There is a break across the knob at the apex of the headplate, removing the tip and the right side of the knob. The third knob is completely missing from the lower right of the headplate, and the break is very worn. The headplate is decorated with small circular punchmarks, five of which run down the centre of the headplate, with a large ring-and-dot design to either side. A dou…

Anglo-Saxon cast copper alloy small long brooch. This class of brooch dates from the late 5th century, circa 475AD, to the early 6th century, circa 525AD. The only detail provided about this brooch is that is has a square headplate. This brooch has been attributed to Leeds (1945) class D square headed (plain) small long brooches, which is based upon the shape of the headplate. However, square headed small long brooches can have a variety of different shaped footplates, thus the shape of the footplate on this example cannot be speculated.

Anglo-Saxon cast copper alloy small long brooch. The brooch has a small florid head and ring and dot decoration. This brooch is probably an example of Leeds (1945) class A trefoil headed small long brooches or class B cross-potent headed small long, both of which are based upon the shape of the headplate. Small long brooches can have a variety of different shaped footplates, thus the shape of the footplate on this example cannot be speculated. Small long brooches date from the late 5th century, circa 475AD, through to the early 6th century, circa 525AD.
